Please help me assign cages vs. stakes

I was trying to find some old threads today and learned that everything before 5/12/10 was gone. :(

Because of this, I need to ask which of these tomatoes to plant next to my 8 foot stakes and which are best in my 5 foot cages. I know it's not the end of the world if a plant gets taller than the cage, but I am trying to get max production and minimum flopping! :) Here is my current plan, can you tell me if I'm making a major mistake? Thanks!

There are still over 200 threads coming up in a search on tomato support and most of them (on the first page anyway) are titled as such.

This Forum is primarily for IDing sources for heirloom flowers and veggies, etc., and not for culture, growing methods, etc., which occurs in the Forums devoted to them. Is what I wrote above and in no way was I being mean or nasty or contrary, as has been suggested, but not in so many words. I was making a suggestion that I thought would give maximum input to the poster, which I see as being paramount. Those of you who know me know that I spend untold hours answering questions in the tomato forum as well as here and almost alone I answer the disease questions in the tomato pest and disease forum. When I first got to GW I too came here to this Forum since my major interest was heirloom veggies. But when I came here I looked at the kind of threads being posted and saw that none were about culture of heirlooms. I was also told that culture questions were handled in the various forums and I found that to be true. Yes, for discussion of heirloom plants as cited above, as in where can I find seeds for this or that variety, or where can I find plants of this or that Dianthus or whatever. And since I knew there were several threads about staking/supporting tomatoes already in the tomato forum I thought, and still think, it was the place to refer someone to before those threads scrolled off. Any person posting deserves to get the most input possible about questions, and many more toamto growers post in the tomato forum than read/post here, for over time, and before I came to GW, heirloom tomatoes, and now I mean ALL aspects, have been discussed in the main Forum. And maximum input means that when someone e-mails me directly for information I ask them to post publically. That's b/c GW is a public message forum and all questions and answers should be posted publically. No one person knows everything, so the goal is to get as many responses/thread as possible. I haven't felt very good reading the criticism that some of you have directed my way, but so be it. plsgorw, it seems to me I've answered some stuff for you in the Tomato Forum already, or perhaps you did e-mail me at home and I suggested you post publically for greater input. Yes? And I will continue to help you and other folks as I already have when I feel I have something to add that hasn't been already said. After posting here at GW for several years I've been able to transmit a lot of what I know about heirloom tomatoes and I see that others to whom I passed on that info are now using it in answering others. And that's the way it should be. So each year now, I expect to post less and less and let information be continued to be passed on. if growing about 2000 varieties of heirloom tomatoes has taught me anything, it's taught me that the best thing I can do with that info is to continue with my SSE membership to distribute new varieties, I don't know if I'll continue with my seed distributions here at GW where I've already distributed over 300 varieties, and most importantly, to pass along information on all aspects of tomatoes that I've learned from my research and my growing of them. Carolyn, who has been growing tomatoes for about 55 years, was raised on a farm and still grows the majority of her tomatoes by sprawling except when she's waiting for a quad muscle tear to heal and expecting a hip replacement will be necessary for her to walk again. And I'm waiting now and going on month six in the walker with possible surgery in the Fall.

Commercial growers worry about things like ease of harvest and uniformity of fruit size, and they tend to have much more intense disease pressures than hobby growers. People who cage generally just let the plant grow as it will. Pruning is reserved for dying or diseased leaves, aside from aggressive removal of leaves from the bottom of the plant to keep foliage away from the soil. Some people will prune off growing tips once the end of the season gets near in order to try to ripen up the fruits already on the plant before frost. Others don't bother and say it doesn't make much of a difference. Some will cut off the tops once the plant grows as tall as the cage, but others will let the vines flop over the top of the cage and continue to grow and hang down. Regardless, the leaves are where the plant produces the sugars and other nutrients that go into making the fruit, so there's some logic to the idea of keeping as much of the foliage as possible. Disease is what you have to weigh against that, so it's a balancing act. Length of growing season is also a consideration. Is there a point in letting a plant get huge and wild and produce a gazillion flowers and set a ton of fruit if you don't have the time for those fruit to mature before frost? Also, if you want to plant a lot of varieties but have insufficient space to let them all grow into huge, caged plants and are OK with a smaller harvest from each plant, you could prune enthusiastically and grow the plants closer together. It's really a matter of what your goals and needs are.

I read all the posts about trying to SPEND LESS MONEY on building tomato cages..even the one that wanted to built them for less than $3.00 each. There are a lot of suggestions...like buying fencing on a roll as a ONE time investment that LAST a life time. Well...to buy tomato cages or even to construct TOMATO cages for LESS than $3.00..........TRY FREE! CONSTRUCTION companies tear down a lot of old buildings, gates, fences. THEY HAVE TO PAY SOME DEBRI COMPANY TO DUMP THEM...so if you approach them for FREE MATERIAL..THEY ARE SO HAPPY to GIVE YOU ANYTHING you want that you can haul away yourself!. I built or use fulton bed Frames or mattress metal frames for trellis for cucumbers and string beans so they can climb up. IT'S FREE! For tomatoes, I found BIG HEAVY DUTY TALL tomato cages that I found in GROCERY OUTLET for $2.99 EACH that would have gone for $10.99 - $15.99 at HOME DEPOT. EVERY CITY HAS A "DUMP" day where tenants and homeowners leave out items on the sideways for pick up. YOU CAN FIND SOME REALLY NICE STUFF in them piles. One homeowner landscaped their house and left out a lot of big black empty planters holders (3 gallon - 5 gallon) which would have costs me $3.00 - $5.00 EACH if I have to buy them ..(FREE, FREE, FREE!!!) so I used them to plant all my herbs. I got fennel, dill, cilentro, parsley, oregano, basil going. AND do I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE HERBS or my VEGGIES? Heck no!. I use ROOT ALL or a ROOT HORMONE powder ($4.00 at WalMart) and CLONE all my veggies off from my friends or neighbor's garden. (Other than the $4 bucks that I have to spend for the rooting hormone).....otherwise it's FREE, FREE, FREE. What? "Buying" STRING to string up trellis? STRING is so FLIMSY!! If you go to HOME DEPOT or OSH...there are those LONG plastic "fastener"s that is WRAPPED around wooden boards. Those are cut and thrown to the ground as the boards are lifted up on to the display area. I picked them off shipping area grounds and use those PLASTIC string and string them across to the stakes for support for the tomato. They are STURDY and they are NOT FLIMSKY. (FREE, FREE, FREE). roselane - for future reference all the old threads are still available in the archives and via Google search and there are many threads older than 2010 mixed in with more current ones in the forum. It all depends on how you word your search.

As to your list Cherokee Purple and Box Car Willie do not get that big IME. I'd switch them with the Beefmaster and San Marzano which do get very big. But honestly, any of them will do fine in 5' CRW cages or on your stakes.

I decided to use only stakes this year. For me it is a storage issue. I really don't have anywhere for them.

I also will use some florida weave as well. I am hoping to find what I like this year.

Angie, what do you have in those milk jugs hanging in the garden?
It looks neat!!!

I have a shepards crook just waiting for something to hang from it :)

Thanks so much Dave. Sorry to ask yet another tomato support question. To clarify, I was looking for a couple of threads I had started. I lost all my tomatoes last year due to irrigation failure so needed the same info again. When I searched my name, older threads from other forums did show up. Didnt know i could do a google search for it, either.

It's no bother. Didn't mean it that way. Just some info to help you find more info in the future. Google will pull all the old GW posts out of the archives if you want them as long as you search by topic. But you are right that searches by user name are limited.

If you can recall the name of the thread, the year, or give me some details about specific issues in it I'll see if I can find them for you.

Whoops, I wasn't very clear. :) Dave, you have been nothing but helpful and I really appreciate ALL the information that you provided. I was worried that I "did something wrong" based on the post by taz. No biggie, just didn't want to give the impression that I made no effort to search for the information.

Karen I have dill in small selfwatering milk jugs and in bigger gallon jugs I have cherry tomatoes and bell peppers all doing great all selfwatering but with heat still have to water ever other day here is pics.

If you do, make sure it's a dwarf plant or at least a 5 gallon container. Tomatoes wont produce very well if at all in a 1 gallon container and I doubt peppers will do very well either.

I have grown cherry tomatoes before in small containers with plenty of fert and water they can make a ton of fruit this is a test on the bell peppers in these containers but I really think they ganna work if I just dont let the water table dry up and Texas heat dont get them .Here is a pic of my upsidedown cherry tomatoes that are out grown my in ground same day planted tomatoes. Never stop trying new things I was once told that dill wouldnt grow well in only 1 cup of dirt I grow tons in less and it grows better than my in ground dill.

Angie, I am happy to see them growing well in small container.

I have a shepards crook I want to hang a plant from. I might just add a cherry tom to it in a planter of some kind (either made or bought).

This will give me more gardening space...

Angie! Those plants in the milk containers, some of them look like they are sprouting out of the bottom of the container -- are they? I feel like I'm out to lunch; I'm not sure I've seen that except for on some made-for-TV product.

How do you do that, I'd love to try it! Thanks, your garden look so AWESOME ! :)
