Mine never gave me any problems even when some some other nearby plants were getting hit hard with this or that. Are they side by side such that some spot soil problem could be affecting them (the reason I never plant the same variety side by side). Dog wizzing on them every day etc.?

Spiced ham, no there are no dogs whizzing, I don`t think it is a problem with soil as I have them in a 4x8 24inch deep bed the soil is the same through out, I have 4 planted on the east end of the bed and 4 of the arkansas travler on the west end the east end is shaded just about an hour more in the morning but makes up for it in the evenings because of my fencing. I am looking at our zones maybe they really don`t like texas weather it has been getting into the low 80s. I did notice that the top 1/3rd seems very green and new growth so maybe they needed more time to harden off or maybe I just am worrying because I am a worry wart.lol They just seemed more fragile than the others even when growing indoors, I may have gotten some inferior seeds. Without a masters degree in tomatoes I guess I will never know.:o)Deanna

No more difficult to grow then any other variety IME. Yellowing of old growth often means too much water. If they happen to be sitting in a low space or a pocket of soil that doesn't drain uniformly water can pool there. Check for aphids too just in case.

There is a red potatoleaf brandywine that has been available for seveal years now. It came from Seeds By Design to several seed sellers mislabeled as Red Brandywine, and has never been renamed. It is a pretty good tomato so it is still sold, either correctly or incorrectly labeled, at a few places.

Yes I have been aware of the Faux Red Brandywine for a long time now. But just because it's listed incorrectly doesn't mean we should quote the same blunder. Two lies don't make a truth. It had been better if eyesofthewolf had called it "Faux" or "Fake" Red Brandywine as not to confuse others. I mean no disrespect to eyesofwolf and probably come off sounding like an old fuddy duddy school teacher but I thought it should be noted, that's all. The real problems are the folks and catalog companies that KNOW they are false advertising but fail to correct it thus perpetuating a lie and creating more confusion. Call me old school but I believe folks should get what they pay for...

The description fits Brandywine more than Red Brandywine size wise. But then it's described as "rich red color and light pink-red undertones". That makes no sense. I believe this is s Faux Red Brandywine.

Anyway, yellow lower leaves are a fairly common malady and can be caused by many things, especially too much water or excess salt. I don't see anything I'd call disease on your plants. I'd give your plants a few more days to see if upper leaves remain healthy. Maybe this will help:

I'd also throw a nice organic mulch in that bed. Shredded leaves, dried non treated grass clippings, salt hay, straw, etc.

bigdaddy Yes Sir I will add mulch, I am just a little overwhelmed with all that I need to do in a short time, thank you for looking that up for me. Next year I plan to order seeds from a different company and try some of the ones that I see listed here from the forum. When you mentioned to much salt were you talking about the epsom salt I added? Because that very well may be the problem, they may have gotten a little more than the others. Thanks again :o)Deanna

Deanna, I can't give a definitive answer on the Epson Salt, I was more thinking too much typical blue stuff fertilizer but maybe one of the PhD's here can answer that. By just looking at those pics I would think it's a mixture of too much fert and water and growing in too compacted soil. But then I see the Arkansas Traveller and that just blows my theory!

I save lots of seed. I have the real deal Red Brandywine. The real Brandywine (Sudduth) you can buy from Johnny's. If you save my name here and message me after next fall I can give you a list of seeds I have available at no charge and I know what I have is real or a faux because I either saved them myself or got them from trusted friends who have forgotten more about this hobby than I'll ever know!. The only faux I have this year is Marianna's Peace because I LIKE the faux MP! I just got the real MP in the mail as well so it's comparison time. (Thank You Cindy!) It took me years to get this all right....;-)

Garden's Alive is a good company and not too costly if you can use one of their 50% off coupons but they would be far down my list as seed merchants. They sell nice bug predators and a nice Kelp/Seaweed fert and that's what I buy from them.
