It came true! I have that color amaryllis. Beautiful color and wonderful photo.

There is something very satisfying about growing something from seed to maturity. I recently planted some canna seed that I collected over ten years ago and they came up. I remember it was a maroon leaved specimen with large pendulous pink flowers. Wonder how long it takes for canna seedlings to bloom?

Roselee, I will have to check with my friend in Seattle who grows cannas from seed frequently. He just brought back some seed from his trip to Costa Rica.

Whew....I would have pulled it up just 'bout 3 years ago thinking it was never gonna bloom and it was a weed...LOL
That is why I cannot grow anything from seed!

Dena, my memory's not that good. It was grown in a pot till last spring. I was actually expecting it to take 5 yrs.

Roselee, my friend Patrick said the cannas would probably bloom for you this year under the right conditions. I think our climate and the right amount of water should just about handle that.

I am letting the last Amaryllis go to seed and am going to try it. Don't leave out what size pot and the watering, lol

Roselee, unless my memory is worse than I think, the cannas by my carport were from seed and I'm pretty sure they bloomed the first season

A friend of mine did the same thing. She saved seed from an amaryllis and planted five seeds. Four of them grew and bloomed and all of them look different. Your amaryllis is beautiful!

Sorry, but I haven't been on the computer for several days, so am just now seeing your posts. Jolana, I placed the seeds in a tray filled with moist seed starter mix, then slightly covered with more. Kept them misted and out of direct sun until they sprouted. Then I moved them to where they got a couple of hours of morning sun, and watered regularly. The next spring, they had developed bulbs about the size of bb's. I then transplanted to individual 4" pots with regular potting soil, watered and fertilized with all the other pot plants. The second spring, they were about the size of a dime, and I moved them to 6" pots. After transplanting, I added about a half inch more soil to kinda stabilize the bulbs because they were completely above ground. Continued with normal watering and fertilizing. The third spring the bulbs were about the size of ping pong balls. I had just built a new bed, so transplanted them into the ground, leaving the shoulders of the bulbs exposed. This year, the fourth, three of the bulbs are the size of baseballs, and have bloomed. The rest are a bit smaller and probably won't bloom till next year. I started 12 seeds, and have 9 now. The three that have bloomed are the same, but they aren't what I bought. The seeds, bought on eBay were from a huge, clear pink amaryllis.

That's interesting how you cared for them through the years and that they are the same, but different from the mother plant. It's a fabulous amaryllis!

I thought it was like mine, but as I went back and looked at pictures I see it is a similar color, but does not have the same markings. Yours are prettier.

Gives me hope that my seedlings will bloom in another couple of years.
I started mine by floating the seeds in a bowl of water, planted out for the first time when roots were 1/2" long.

Yours are lovely. I am expecting plain ol' red, but that's okay. The joy is in the growing.
