On Monday one of my 12-19 inch tall Salvia greggiis was chomped off to within about an inch of the base of the plant. On Tuesday my 4 year old Snapdragen had one section of stems and leaves chomped off. On Wednesday my Dicliptera suberecta that is 2ft tall and in a pot wedged behind a boulder in a protected corner of the bed in front of the house had every stem and leaf chew off except for the main stem which is now completely bare except for the stubs where stems used to be. Today half of my 4 yr oold Helleborus suffered the same fate and all the leaves and stems of the Heleborus were in the enclosed area behind the boulder in the front bed.

The plants aren't being eaten but drug to a secluded corner next to the foundation of the house or in the little overhand between the diding and the foundation. There is fencing all around the bed where the snapdragon is. I know it isn't deer because they wouldn't eat the salvia greggii nor the helleborus and they couldn't get to the tiny space behind the boulder in front or under the siding in the corners where the leaves are being stashed. It isn't a rabbit and even though I thought it was a vole at first, a vole couldn't get these huge helleborus leaves and stems over the boulder and behind it in the corner .

Doues anyone have any idea what is chewing off these plants? I am beside myself.

It sounds like a rabbit to me, making a nice nest with all that foliage. Voles tunnel, not drag foliage.

I would pull all the foliage out so that you are disturbing their nest.

What a drag!! At least it's the end of the season and they are not stealing from the hummers.

How about setting a Hav-a-heart trap?

Well I know the voles tunnel but I have actually seen them chewing off plants and stuffing them in a corner but not to the extent I am seeing it right now and I don't think a voles could scale that bolder. I didn't think of a rabbit becaude I have never seen a rabbit use the rough leaves of a helleborus or smelly plants like salvia greggii. It is usually grass or grassy leaves that I have seen them line a nest with and I have never seen them haul this debris to an inside corner under the siding but then again anything is possible. Yesterday I sprinkled flour all over the surface of that bed to see if any footprints showed up and of course NADA! I haven't tried a Hava heart trap yet because whate4ver it is it is trap shy just by the way it avoids any wire enclosures I have out there.

Suebot - don't think i'm going to tell you anything that somebody else hasn't said, but since i've had too much experience with deer & rabbits, i figured i'd concur with the remedies that worked for me. i used to live/learned to garden on nantucket and martha's vineyard, where the deer are at least as unreasonably tame and probably more abundant than they are in ct. i've heard stories of people standing 10 ft away from them yelling at them while they chomp on their hydrangea flower buds. one woman i was talking to claimed she saw the deer attacking her dalmation!! anyway, my first thought about your original message was are you sure all damage is due to deer and not rabbits? - when they stand on their hind legs, they can eat quite high - on a couple of my client's properties on the islands, i had more problems with bunnies than deer, especially with my daylilies & echinacea. so, i also found success with the deer away spray products; i can't remember which one i used, but i believe it had garlic & mint in it and i actually liked the way it smelled. the directions said to spray every couple of weeks (??), but i found that i had to spray every couple of days or so & definitely after a rain. it was pretty time consuming. unfortunately, my other success was fencing in the gardens. i just tried to be decorative about it - i used nice cedar posts with caps, bird netting @ 4' high (you can't really see it, so the garden still looks nice), i hung rope along the top of the netting (for a nautical look...). I did throw netting on top of the gardens in the spring until things grew too tall, but i have to admit, the deer hopped in a couple of times (- that would've been a mess i kind of would have liked to see). i now live in maine and have a large cutting garden in my back yard, a good distance from my house and i use the bird netting as the fencing (simply because it was the only fencing i could find that would be high enough in one piece) and it works (doesn't handle snow load, though). i see deer in the back and they walk right around the garden. chipmunks are now my problem. unfortunately, my true feeling is that if the deer want to get to something, they will. sorry to be so lengthy, good luck. just out of curiosity, do you have phlox and is it being eaten - that always gets destroyed the worst for me. -mara

I agree, very interesting topic! My kids aren't yet teenagers (DS is 7, DD is 10) but we have the messy room issue already. Really, it's just they're not in the habit of picking up toys and stuff anywhere (we don't have a nightly routine about this because with both parents working full-time, we try to spend time with the kids on more meaningful things like reading together). The house is not a disaster, but it's not neat as a pin either. Sometimes that bothers me, sometimes not. I wanted to make the point that I view it as part of my parental duties to teach the kids strategies for dealing with a room that's "a complete disaster". Strategies like, don't worry about putting each item away as you pick it up. Start by categorizing things into piles: clean clothes here, dirty clothes here, cars here, books here, etc, etc. Then deal with each pile in turn. It helps organize the stuff and organize the mind. When I participate with my kids in this endeavor, they don't feel so "alone" in what's viewed as an unmanageably big task, and I'm teaching by example that cleaning up is really gratifying in the end. I had so many gigantic battles over my room with my dad when I was a teen. It was all about control, and I remember telling him that if it bothered him, I would keep my door closed. His answer was that I was not allowed to keep the door closed. He is a dear man and I love him a lot, but I have never quite recovered from these "epic battles." I was a straight-A student, had good friends, went to church ... the whole "good kid" shebang. And yet, he HAD to fight with me over my room, which was not unsanitary or anything. I am DETERMINED that I will not perpetuate this with my kids, so I thank you all for your posts to this thread because I've really learned a lot. I will continue to teach them that there is value in having things put in their place, that there are strategies for making an unmanageable task manageable, and that sometimes having a place that's not cluttered helps unclutter your mind. But ultimately, I will take your words to heart and try to remember that they need a place to call their own, which is within their control, and that a cluttered room won't ruin them. It didn't ruin me! :-)

Get a second opinion from a feline vet. Even the best vets will on occasion miss things. Be honest with both vets saying, "I just want to make sure nothing was accidentally missed." If it would be easier - blame it on me, say "a friend really thinks I should do this." I am a medical professional and volunteer with a feline rescue/shelter. You would be amazed at how often things are found on "second opinion," both human and feline. I have no way to prove this (and I know it sounds like those horrid never spank a child memes), but I've never had dogs react in any way positively to physical violence. I have found it's fair game to speak harshly to the dog and then let it go. In my experience that's enough, the dog DOES really want to please his alpha. That being said, I failed to ever correct my father's chihuahua when I was living with him for 2.5 years. The dog would run in the house and poop and pee. It drove me nuts. Before that, I would have said 'house break, not a problem', but that dog convinced me that sometimes you can't win. Chihuahuas are notorious for being a difficult dog to house break, so that's my excuse. My main breed is Australian Shepherd, and it's been trivial to house break them for me. Speaking harshly to the dog simply crushes them, but is effective. Crating helps, and basically everything should be set up to help the dog succeed, so you can praise her for it. That given, let me also tell you that my last aussie (who died yesterday) took it to extremes. I praised him for pooping outside when he was a puppy, and I kinda continued to do that. The end result, I got a dog that always tried to poop every time he was taken outside. Sometimes, you get too much of a good thing....but he realized it pleased me, so that's what he would try to do.

Penny-it's definitely either the mountain lion,bear, moose, elk, cougar, wolf,puma, great white shark, koala, sasquach or whatever else these people are spotting, see you responded as a nature lover and they sent all them animals your way, if not it's probably them damn hummingbirds those destructive little beasts lol.

If I ever catch this varmint I am going to bag him and bring him over to your house Remy! You have a lot more plants to eat and he can go for years without ever being noticed in your jungle LOL!

All joking aside, I did catch a vole last night in one of my Tom Cat live catch traps so I will watch now for any other damage. I do think something larger (possibly a rabbit as GG suggested is working on the larger plants because a vole couldn't possible Chomp of whole stems of my helleborus.

Oh, and I realized I was completely wrong in my answer this morning. It is a Pink Flamingo making nesting for the winter probably. They've expanded their territory past the Cheektowaga border.

NO! NO! Not the Pink Flamingo...the bane of my very existance! I moved north to get away from the Pink Flamingo! Bring on the Yetti,the elk, the black bear, the cougar, and coyote even Bigfoot from Boggy Bayou but not the Pink Flamingo!

I did cover my coral bells with flower pots as they were the next plant to get hit. We also cought one vole in a Tom Cat live catch trap. SO far no more munching in the front bed but the flower pots are staying in place for the rest of the winter just in case that Pink Flamingo decides to rear its ugly head again.....We do have a very humor filled group don't we?
