Strange Occurence - August Mango Flowering in the Desert!

While nosing around the yard, I came upon my Chocanon mango pushing blossoms! We've had 100 degrees + for many days now, though recently have had a Hawaii-like humid spell, but for what ever reason, this young mango has decided to try something.

I know this mango is supposed to have multiple flower/fruiting cycles in the tropics, but just don't know if it's young and confused or what. It did NOT flower this early spring when all the other mangos did....

And it looks like all the lighter colored growth spurts have the same idea.....will keep you guys posted...

Has anyone in the states ever had mid-season mango blooming and late season fruit? mangodog

My (unknown cultivar to me) mango sprouted within the last 2 weeks, in my hot and dry Bakersfield climate. Let's see if I'll get any fruits.

My Valencia pride has 3 maturing mangoes on it and 1 bloom spike with baby mangoes. I'm hoping when I harvest the 3 big ones it'll push growth into the babies.

Hi everyone! I've followed this thread with growing interest, and finally took the next step by posting hete :) . I am a professional gardener, and my interests lie heavily on pomology and dendrology (yup, a tree hugger!). I have a vision to introduce cultivars of mulberries, american persimmons, paw paws, nuts, and cornelian cherries to my country of Finland. Now to many it would seem that being as far north as alaska might impose some challenges, but thanks to gulf stream, our southern end is beginning to be the equivalent of USDA 5b/6 ..but of course that's regarding only the low temperatures. At Köppen-Geiger climate we at the south are at Dfb , for those who use that. I'd like to talk about all potential plants, but let's focuse on paw paws...now we have of course insane amounts of light at the peak of the summer, will that help or hinder paw paws, I'm not sure. Last two summers have been wet and cold, and I suspect that no paw paws would have ripened. But then again, I remember summers with +30 Celsius (86 F) , and some winters that went as low as -30C (-22F) . Most of the time however we stay near the -20 C (-4F) at winter, so the low temperatures really are not an issue. However the growing degree days might be...and so I am especially interested in trying the absolutely most earliest cultivars! I really don't care about the size right now, I just want to PROVE to me and to others here that you can actually grow paw paw in the open and outside :D The excel sheet that someone posted is most excellent tool and I thank for that. Now to questions: -Do you have any special recommedations to try? -Should I also focus on growing seedlings ( I have four one year old seeldings, and 50 seeds in the fridge, all from Oikos) to find special case that grows well here? -Do you think that root stock will make a real difference? -When do you think is the best time to graft paw paw, and how thick the trunk should be before I try that? The pineapple tops I planted were "Tropical Gold" variety, grown in Hawaii. I know that Del Monte completely stopped production in Hawaii but Dole still has some there. Most of the time if I buy a pineapple that is Dole it will say Product of Costa Rica but if I'm lucky I'll get a Dole grown in Hawaii. Why lucky, what's better about Hawaiian than Costa Rican? Not sure but it just seems more of a rarity now to get a Hawaiian grown pineapple than a Costa Rican. Also the Hawaiian ones I recently got were very sweet and looked to be ripened on the plant and not cut off green. Dole says green is ripe but I beg to differ. The Hawaiian ones I got were gold and gold off the plant but the Costa Rican ones I see are always green with no sweet scent. Question to you, the Hawaiian one the tag has Tropical Gold. From the Dole website Topical Gold are grown in Latin America, I suppose Costa Rica to be specific. So would you say that the ones in Hawaii are the exact breed as in Latin America since both are called Tropical Gold? Or do you think there is some variation in the Tropical Gold variety between Hawaii and Costa Rica? What is the difference between Tropical Gold and the Smooth Cayenne varieties? The Dole page doesn't go into that but just say that Dole started with Smooth Cayenne and then developed the Tropical Gold 100 years later. Thanks

Bill - you don't want EVERYTHING do you??? LOLOLOL....... Unfortunately, our cool winters prohibit multi-season production, at least that is my experience so far. The places in the world where mangos produce like that are in the truly tropical areas. I think the best you're going to get is long seasons. As far as potted plants stressing out a second bloom and fruit set - can't say as I know that answer to that one.... I DO know from experience my KEITT did hold fruit from September thru November, and might have held longer if I hadn't picked the last one a bit green cuz I was tired of waiting. And yes, we are at least 2 if not 3 months behind Florida. All your varieties represent a well spread mango season as far as I can tell.....BUT.....I will say my climate out here does not seem to have an "early" season so far. My Rosigold ripens at exactly the same time, as my midseason Manila.....My Nam Doc Mai (a seedling, not the #4) is just flowering - a good 6-7 weeks after everything else, so that will be a late season one. I think, Bill, you and I and all the SoCals are going to have to discover in our unique environments, how things ultimately pan out... But didn't you just buy a bunch of plants? Or was that ManGoBananas....I'm starting to lose track of the newbies....sorry.... anyway that's my two centavos - I'll be interested to here what others have to say..... We're still middle of winter here so the temps are only getting up to around 34C. But every day is a day closer to spring and the rainy season. I'll get some more photos in the next day or so, but then I'm away for about 4 to 5 weeks. The fruits should be a lot bigger by then.

Seems they do this much easier in a pot. Mine, in the ground, has never bloomed off season any more than any other SE Asian mango and certainly never set any significant off season crop.

A few years ago I went to Kirby'd nursery in Florida and I bought a Cogshall. That was June and by August it was pushing inflos. Mine was also a small maybe 3 gal tree. To bad it bit the dust. My lack of experience but I have learned since then.

I have a Maha Chinook I bought from Frankies last year. That tree made it thru the winter like a champ. Now it has doubled in size. I also have a Carrie but it's still infected with that darn sooty mold. I have been spraying with rubbing alcohol. I am going start spraying again. We have had a very humid and hot summer in western NY. I think this has made it harder for that tree to recover.

My Lancetilla (in the ground), Carrie and Mallika (in pots) flowered twice... I left two little fruitlets on my Mallika the rest of them I pulled, they are about the size of a bean now.

Ah Andrew - sooty mold - don't have that problem in the desert! But I've heard it's a bear to get rid of - did you know I was from the Binghamtom area? Never knew mangos when I was your age though (big smile...)

JF - so you have gotten the double down on the blooms, too - I didn't know - wonder if that perhaps means the future for some of our mango trees will be two sets of fruits per year - probably a larger crop followed by a smaller.....

Wouldn't that be sweet!?X

This morning I took a couple pics of my 3 yr old in ground Choc Anon. It is still pushing out a few more flowers, so maybe some Thanksgiving Mango's will be a reality .... ....

It has never set fruit. Maybe a flower here or there, but this bloom looks the most promising by far..

I thought I would update the Choc Anon status ...

I took this photo this morning. The tree is currently holding 2 fruit, and has pushed out another flower!

Not bad.....looks like a couple of mangoes in your fall diet plan. I'll be interested to hear if they are any better than regular season fruits. Definitley keep me posted.
