Mangos flowering

Mangos everywhere around are bursting into flower. Great sign that the midway point of winter has passed. Soon be hot days and mango madness.

It's a bonanza for nectar feeding insects, especially the butterflies.

i would wait to remove the inflorescence after little mangoes form. if you remove the cluster too early your tree may just send out more inflorescence and not any new leaf growth. This happened to me with one of my trees. i kept on removing flowers, it kept on shooting out flowers. Here is a link that might be useful: mango tree updates

Ah Andrew - sooty mold - don't have that problem in the desert! But I've heard it's a bear to get rid of - did you know I was from the Binghamtom area? Never knew mangos when I was your age though (big smile...) JF - so you have gotten the double down on the blooms, too - I didn't know - wonder if that perhaps means the future for some of our mango trees will be two sets of fruits per year - probably a larger crop followed by a smaller..... Well,if your new to a cold climate..that's going to make the decision for you. Or,be a huge influence. I would guess Mango would be the fastest to fruit and have fruit that taste better then markets. Barbados Cherry is tender but compact. If protected it should do ok. Banana's also will give you ripe fruit. But,they need l lots of water and room. The propane will be of great use. I remember back in 2007 a central valley Mango and Cherimoya collector who had gotten fruit bearing out of his small grove for years using just frost cloth,lost them all when it got down to the mid 20's night after night. On the other hand? On garden web a guy in north Texas has some great looking Mango tree's that made it through his winter in a sunken cold frame surrounded by bales of hay covered in clear plastic. Once spring came,that all came down and he had a tropical garden.

Yes, it's in Australia, near Darwin. The trees all over the place are just covered in flowers.

Nice photos! Would love to see updates once fruiting starts.

Can't help but think of the classic surf movie, "Endless Summer"... where the guys follow summer around the world. It occurs that you could also follow mango season around the world :)

Although mangos produce thousands of pinhead fruits, most fall off as the tree would have no hope trying to support them all to maturity.

of 110 degrees (today in the desert!)

We're still middle of winter here so the temps are only getting up to around 34C. But every day is a day closer to spring and the rainy season. I'll get some more photos in the next day or so, but then I'm away for about 4 to 5 weeks. The fruits should be a lot bigger by then.
