Growing Tomatoes

New leaf growth is upside down and grayish. Pics

These are heart varieties growing in containers. I have others doing fine in the same mix. I know they are infamous for their wispy droopy foilage. But the new leaf growth is barreling 180 degrees with intense grayish color (not purple) undersides. Anybody have some insight? Nutrient? Disease? Heart just being a heart?

most likely thing is it needs phosphorus and/or warmer roots

Also, you have white under the plant. Perhaps it is having trouble differentiating between the sun and the reflected light?

Pictures? If the foliage pads are oriented downward because you twisted main branches while wiring & didn't properly reorient tufts used to form pads, you're probably going to be in trouble. In my experience, when you flip the foliage you get a LOT of photo-oxidation (sunburn) and death of the foliage. If that's not the case - if you didn't flip the branches over when wiring, you might need to offer a better explanation or provide pics. Al

Bryan, at this time of year as the trees are brought inside it is important to avoid extremely rapid changes in light exposure to prevent leaf drop. It is always best to aclimate plants by reducing light by partial shading 2 weeks or more before move indoors. I see in a thread above that the Halide light you were going to use was not working. At first both of your trees were losing leaves when you first moved them inside. Reading in between the lines, I take it after you fixed the halide light and started to illuminate your trees the Oro adjusted and stopped droping leaves. My guess is that the Trovita, will continue to drop leaves, even the vast majority of leaves, but not 100 percent. The tree will retain some leaves. If it was my tree I would reduce the fertilization to a minimum (not stop) lightly every 3rd watering or so. Does the growing medium still retain rapid drainage when you water, or has the medium compacted? The roots will need good aeriation during this period of time. You might get some die back on the smaller twigs. Citrus are very resilient. Citrus trees are able to withstand a lot of stress. It would be nice to hear how the tree is doing ever week or so. sorry... I typed this a couple hours ago, forgot to hit the post button... This is a very sporting hosta. I've got a Pineapple Juice - the name they give the yellow version that lacks the green margin... it was stable for about 5 years and now a good section of it is dark green with a yellow edge... in other words, a sport that looks pretty much identical to Pineapple Punch... or maybe like Pineapple Ripple. The difference, based on their registrations, is that PP is dark green centered and PR is medium green... I'll have to compare some greens one of these days. Anyway, these all come originally from a wavy lanced green one called Pineapple Poll. It is registered as a cross between sieboldianna and lancifolia. I sure don't see any big round blue in it, but it shares a lot of characteristics with good old lancifolia. So... if you have one with no margins, I think you can change the label to Pineapple Juice. (I opposed this for so long, but in fact I think that is exactly what is happening in the tissue culture labs. They clone PUC... then instead of throwing away the all-yellow culls, they rename them. Sometimes the plants go out to growers as small tcs with iffy margins... I know I had at least one PUC tc that went all yellow.

Upside Down Tomatoes???

Hi everyone, I want to experiment with "Upside-down" tomatoes this year but have one question that has not been answered on any of the posts I read. For upside-down planting, which type of tomato is best; determinate or indeterminate? I read about folks whose plants have broken off as they attempt to change direction and I wonder if that is because they planted the wrong type. I also read that many have a problem with water weeping on the stem and others who find it necessary to water multiple times per day. I will be trying out an idea for making the bottom of the container a reservoir by a method I have yet to devise, lol. If no one knows which type of tomato is better, I guess I will just have to plant one of each and let you all know after the harvest.

I think it's environment. I don't think it's disease.

I had almost the exact same one last year. I just watch it do nothing but stay that way for weeks. If only it would have just die so I know to pull it.

This year I am more diligent. If it was me, I would take a picture of it now. Then a week later take another picture and compare them. If they uncurling doesn't stop, I would pull it. That's just my noobie opinion.

johnny-I took Mulio's advice and gave these guys a nice even dose of liquid 7-9-5 fertilizer and wham! They are coming around already as the leafs have started to green and roll back into normal position. So it surely was a nutrient problem. I will be tied up for the next couple of days as my wife will be giving birth to our first tomorrow, but I will post some comparison pics in a few days.

Well here is an update. They are now doing much better.

Every thing else is coming along too.

Thanks everybody. Little Noah and the wife are doing great. He was born the 3rd. Everything went very well, I thank God.
