barb, I couldn't find anything spelled Pecolino.

The huge Ventmarin tomato database in France lists a Picolino Hybrid, and describes it thus:

Fruit rouge rond de type "cocktail" de 35 a 40 grammes. En grappe de 8 a 10 fruits. Variete utilisee dans les grosses productions industrielles. Croissance indeterminee.

In my poor translation, it's a round red "cocktail" tomato (generally a large cherry with an expensive PR campaign), 35-40 grams in weight (1 1/4 - 1.4 oz.). Each truss can bear 8-10 fruit. The variety is grown in large commercial operations (i.e., seeds might not be available retail). Indeterminate growth habit.

Google's custom search for veggies for gardeners found nothing except one reference to Picolino basil and some cukes spelled Piccolino. That isn't proof no one is selling seeds in the U.S., since not every online catalog shows up in the Google search.

Tatiana's TOMATOBase lists an open-pollinated Piccolo, also a red cherry; seeds at one time were sold by TomatoFest, but apparently not this year. Tatiana got her seeds from someone in Britain; it's speculated Piccolo is a European variety. Ventmarin lists a hybrid Piccolo cherry, but unlike Tatiana's, lists the weight: at 13-18 grams it's about 1/3 the size Ventmarin lists for Picolino, so probably not the same variety.

farmerdill, after I posted I remembered I'd intended to look at the Cornell database, as they're more likely to list hybrids, though generally not foreign ones. No luck.

Then I tried the database of the forum-which-cannot-be-named, and under Picolino I found a 2005 post of yours (or someone using the same name) describing Picolino as "A 35 -40 g cocktail tomato from De Ruiter." Any idea where you got the seeds?

Ok, that clears it up a bit. De Ruiter is now a subsidiary of Seminis, so they apparently no longer post a separate web catalog as they did in 2005. Apparently it is a popular green house tomato in Europe.

I thank you very much for the information set forth in these posts. My daughter is in London right now,and I am sure she will savor these while she is there. Now, if I could just try to get some of these seeds, but unless she thinks of that while she is there, it is probably for naught because apparently the seed is not available in the U.S.I had no idea you could help me--especially since I did not know how to even spell them. That certainly sounds like what she described to me. Barb

I don't know if this would be illegal, but perhaps your daughter could remove the seeds from one of these tomatoes, put them in a napkin or some such and bring them back home. Then at least you'd know you're getting precisely the tomato she likes so much.

farmerdill's link spells it Piccolini, and miesenbacher's says Picolino. This is one confused tomato!

There was nothing under Piccolini in any of the other databases I searched before.

barb, if your daughter can't find seeds in Britain, what she can do is to save seeds from a tomato and mail them to herself in America. Apparently people trade seeds that way all the time. Since the seeds are dry, it's not considered likely to spread pests or diseases. [I'm not sure what would happen if she tried to bring them through US customs.... We have a family story about how my grandmother, living in Taiwan, put a "surprise" for me in my mother's luggage: it turned out to be seeds she'd saved from a 2' Asian cucumber. I've no idea what would have happened to my parents if the Customs people had checked their luggage.]

I suggest your daughter buy some tomatoes as soon as she arrives in Britain, remove the seeds from one or two fruit, and rub off the gel. Then put the seeds on a paper towel to dry.

After a few days, wrap the seeds in a square of paper to keep them all together (if they were completely dry, I'd put them in a tiny ziplock, but they wouldn't be completely dry for a couple of weeks, and you don't want them to mold). Then place the seeds inside a letter envelope with a flat piece of bubble-wrap cut to the size of the envelope (this reduces the chance that heavy postal machines will crack the seeds). Mail the envelope to the US.

You might get something similar to the hybrid in taste ... no guarantees. Good luck.
