Fear of flooring: gray porcelain tile in mudroom?
Comments (3)18x18 will not work very well design wise with a floor drain. You need a much smaller tile to be able to conform to the slope of the room. You don't want to be larger than about an 8x8 with a floor drain, and even then, the cuts around the drain will not be that pretty. If you have your contractor use epoxy grout like they do in commercial installations, then you will have no issues with permanent staining. The only other thing to be sure of is that your subfloor is firm enough deflectionwise to be able to support a tile floor. If you are on a concrete foundation, it's fine. However, if you are on a crawlspace or second floor, you need to look at the size of your joists, their spacing, and their span. That will determine how much "bounce" there is in your floor. Even if your floors feel firm, they still will have subtle deflection. Deflection creates cracked floors if not addressed before install....See MoreSmooth finish or Hand Scraped finish on wood floor? Comments (12)Slush's DW here. Not sure if this is helpful at all to you but we went with Garrison II Walnut for our living room and hallways. We are trying to decide if we want to carry it through to the kitchen. We LOVE the floors. Yes they do get scratches and dings when things drop on them, but clean up easily and the scratches magically disappear when cleaned. (or if really deep, I just use a black sharpie) We get so many compliments on the flooring, it's definitely the favorite thing in our home. I also love the feel of it when you walk on it. The little groves are just fun. We got them installed in 2006 and have 3 young children. They are holding up great. Here are a few pictures: This was soon after install in 2006 From Kitchen - BEFORE Another view From Kitchen - BEFORE And 5 years later it still looks awesome (excuse the mess please - I was capturing the chaos of Christmas morning - but you can still see the floors) From Kitchen - BEFORE...See MoreSaying good-bye to Moss.
Comments (38)So sorry, Shee, that you've lost a treasured friend after all these years. Not long ago I saw a shirt emblazoned with this: Be the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are and was struck with the truth of that simple saying, which of course goes for cats and all our dear pets. They revere us even when we do not deserve it, and that's a humbling perspective as an "owner." Your cat obviously loved you and your whole family and I know his loss must have been very hard. <3...See MoreForest Valley hardwood flooring: ever heard of it?
Comments (14)This is a 10mm (possibly 9.5mm) thick solid hardwood. That is 0.38 inches thick. Yikes. That's pretty thin. You might get ONE sand and refinish out of it. This is in the same category as Lumber Liquidator stuff. I found the Armstrong look-a-like: 3/4" solid hard wood out of Hickory (not red oak like the other product). The edges are different and the finish are different. Probably two different manufacturers. For $1.79/sf you get what you pay for. That's a VERY low solid or engineered hardwood floor or a medium/high-end laminate (right thickness for laminate). Not much in that thickness is that cheap. Makes you wonder. Good luck....See MoreOliver Wong
