2011 Tomato Photos (Part 3)

Time for more pics, everyone's plants are looking great so far. This thread should be plenty full at 30-40 posts, if someone wants to start part 4 in case I don't get around to it before it gets too full.

For those who don't know how to post a photo -

First, upload your picture to a sever such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc (I usually use URLs to my Facebook photos). Copy the URL to your image (should start with http://). The URL should end in ".jpg" or another similar image extension - do not copy the URL from your address bar. That will just copy the link of the web page that contains your image. Right-click on the image to get the address of the image. Then post this code in the body of your reply message:

<img src="http://www.example.com/myimage.jpg">;

Of course, you replace my example.com address with the URL of the image.

My toms are being hardened off along with the hot peppers (orange hab, cayenne, black pearl) and eggplant and broccoli (a little late getting broccoli in, hope it goes OK).

Thanks Silvia! Your squash and melons are beautiful! Do you plant a second round of those, like your tomatoes, because they shut down in the heat? HereÂs a bunch of new pictures...come take a quick tour! ;-) A big group of my veggie containers. The German Black heirloom (front) goes into a larger square pot soon, and tomato cages go up. A couple of containers will probably move to other spots...if I can find any room, lol. Spacemaster Cucumbers, you can still see the hail damage...peppers & toms have torn leaves as well. :-( One cuc never came up, so I may drop another seed in the back, or just leave it. They will get an inverted tomato cage soon. My cucumber watchdog, lol. I also have a pepper watchdog, a tomato one... theyÂre babies and theyÂre everywhere! How lucky, eh? There must have been a mantis nest in one of the bushes against the building. Beware, you nasty mealy bugs and white flies! California Wonder Peppers: A California Wonder baby: Huge Sungold truss: Big Beef ...hopefully soon to break in color: Black Krim heirloom: Nasturtium ~ only one of 40 seeds germinated. Grrrr! I've only been watering every 10-14 days since the planting mix in my raised beds stays pretty moist. My tomatoes started breaking in the middle of August. Black Prince tomato breaking color on August 12th (80 days after transplant) Of course, this was the same week I had planned a trip to San Diego to visit my family. Three of the Black Prince tomatoes actually ripened within a week of the first tomato breaking. I made my husband take a picture, then pick them since they were getting overripe. Black Prince tomatoes ripening on the vine on August 20th I was only away for six days, but of course, this was when the weather finally started warming up (breaking 80°), so the other tomatoes also started breaking. When I got home on August 23rd, all of them were breaking. More Black Prince tomatoes breaking on August 23rd Cherokee Purple tomatoes breaking on August 23rd (89 days after transplant) Tomatoes on the first Black Krim plant breaking on August 23rd (90 days after transplant) One tomato on the second Black Krim plant breaking on August 23rd (90 days after transplant) A Jaune Flammé tomato breaking on August 23rd (41 days after transplant) The week's harvest of Black Krim (on bottom left, including the bright red one), one Jaune Flammé (top left), three Black Prince (top left), two Cherokee Purple (top right), and dozens of Sun Gold tomatoes on August 26th The two Black Krim plants are producing different colored tomatoes. Tatiana's TomatoBase shows Black Krim tomatoes to be dark reddish-brown when ripe, like the ones in on the bottom left in the photo above. However, all the tomatoes from the second Black Krim plant are bright red when ripe, some with green shoulders. I grew both of these plants from Burpee's Heirloom Tomato seeds, and their photos show some bright red tomatoes. I was a little surprised by the variation in shape for the Black Prince, but I wasn't expecting that much variation in the color for any of the heirlooms. Cherokee Purple starts off pink with green shoulders, then turns golden-orange, then dark reddish-purple. It's not only beautiful (if you can overlook some catfacing) but tasty too!

Rosarama, im in no way taking credit for this growing medium, I learned about it on this forum. Its strickly for containers for what I know about it. The man that came up with it to my knowledge is Al Tapla. 5 parts pine bark, ground up cut up or whatever is done to it till its the average size of a dime. 1 part coarse perlite 1 part peat 2 cups dolimite, 1 cup of pro max minors, 2 cups of slow release fertilizer I mix every thing in a 36 gal container, a little at a time. I believe its the best thing since sliced bread. Look up and study Als mix. If your serious about growing maters in containers you should learn about Als mix, it would save you a lot of heart ache, and make you much more successful in growing in containers. I'd like to add a picture of my tomatoes too... I have 12 tomatoes in the ground: opalka, yellow pear, chocolate cherry, sweet 100, cherokee chocolate, kbx, cowlick's brandywine, big zac, box car willie, dr wyche's yellow, omar's lebanese and nar. as you can see, i've placed them in cages... do i still have to provide stakes for them or is the cage enough as a support? if i do have to provide a stake, which variety should i stake, or do i have to stake all of them? it'd be nice to know this early so i could provide the necessary stake support before they become bigger. also, which ones usually goes higher than 5'? i know yellow pear, chocolate cherry and sweet 100 does... how about the others? i only have a 5' cage, do i have to top them off when the time comes? thanks for any advice you can give, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Hey, tex_container_man:

Do the red things you have hung help with the birds? They've been a nuisance these past few years. I'm trying to hang red Christmas ornaments all over the place because I'm tired of picking my tomatoes green!

That is correct. It doesn't work 100% of the time but it does seem to help. Netting will be my next step if these christmas ornaments don't work this year. Let me know if yours work!!

This morning in my garden,

The other side of the garden

First to ripe this season : Tomato Berry, Yellow Submarine, Indian Stripe, Monokah's Hat, Hungarian Giant, Estiva. I will update the pictures when most of the fruit is ripe.

can i ask what your set up is exactly? you have some huge plants in containers... i've had pretty bad luck growing tomatoes in containers.

Have to bump this one back up to the top with a pic of my cherry tomato "jungle." lol...2-3 getting leggy, but will do just fine when I get them outdoors in the next few days & pot them up to their final containers. :) Bud sets on about half of them already. Chocolate Cherry, Chadwick Cherry & Sungold Select II...

2nd best seedling. This one has smaller, more narrow foliage but the flower trusses are better.

Yes Vivian, the one and only. In fact if you look close. (Sorry about the picture quality. It was windy.) There are some rooted cuttings sitting on the table inside the shade structure I built for my tomatoes.

I will be adding the next level of supports inside the tomato trellis in the next day or two and planting a fig tree or two while I'm at it.

Jealous of all you warmer climate folks...

I will post pictures one of these days - when my plants are a little more impressive looking, hehe.

They're doing great, it's just still too early in the growing season here in PA.

Wow love all your photos! Still too cool for me here, I have a couple of cherry type and a few Early Girls going in shortly. Not nearly as many as some of you though!

I'm harvesting some early season types already. The beefsteaks are coming soon. Most of Texas is suffering from drought, but it's not as bad in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. Early Blight has infected some of my plants. Hopefully, I can keep it under control and still manage to get a good harvest.

Thank you Karen, here is the recipe for you. I really like it and I will make it again, I substitute the goat cheese for the feta. I like the crust too.

The good thing about this recipe is that you can substitute big tomatoes if that is what you have, also the cheese, anything you like. Everyone that sampled at my house liked it. I will be trying new recipes since my big tomato harvest is just starting, cherry, medium, big, colors. I will try to post the recipes that come out good.

Wouldn't this only be true for an indeterminate? I mistakenly pinched a few of the initial suckers off of my Glacier plant a month ago and it is not looking like it will be turning out very well.
