What did you get new this year for your garden?

I have most of my new acquisitions in the ground, finally, in this insanely early season. I mostly have shopped garden club sales and catalogs, with a few side trips to favorite nurseries. Here's a list of some of the things I'm most excited about. Oh yes - I must note that I started a spreadsheet this year of my plants, and I'm up over 300 unique varieties so far - call me a geek, you'll be right, but I prefer to think of myself as a "collector"!

Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldii'

Polemonium 'Stairway to Heaven'

Verbascum 'Clementine'

Azalea 'Mandarin Lights'

Heucherella 'Gold Zebra'

Rose 'Prairie Sunrise' (a Bucks rose)

Alcea ficifolia 'Happy Lights' hollyhock (from seed)

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost'

I also got an unnamed Epimedium and an unnamed Euphorbia from garden club sales, and a nameless viburnum, and a money plant, and Centranthus ruber, and various other goodies.

Very few new acquisitions this year but I did add a few new hummer plants
Salvia 'Wendy's Wish'
Lonicera sempervirens 'Major Wheeler'

I put in a perennial border around my veggie garden this year. Hopefully, the perennials are deer and bunny proof. So new this year are: irises (mixed NOID), two blueberry bushes (one doing well, the other struggling - I know a favorite for the deer and bunnies to munch on), Asian lilies (just a mixed bag at Lowes. Last year the bunnies didn't touch them. This year the bunnies are mowing them down), red Monarda, lavender, Speedwell, daisies, Echinacea (Pow Wow and a white one) and May Nights Salvia!

Also new, a number of daylilies, candytuft, an order of irises (still to come from Schreiner's).

New to me veggies are sweet potatoes, collards, Scarlet Runner beans.

I ordered from Digging Dog for the first time this year. They had a Valentines Sale on the internet, but I screwed up my order, so I had to e-mail, then phone, then phone two more times. When I finally got hold of someone they were very nice and took care of the order so I got the special. Then, they experienced big delays in getting plants from their supplier. This meant my plants were two or more months late getting to me. They gave me opportunities to cancel, but I did not...never thinking that brand new plants going into my soil just as my summer heat comes in is not a good idea. Bottom line, some of the plants died. I don't think it was entirely their fault. I should have cancelled the order. The plants that survived did wonderfully well, and I am wowed with the Rigoletto miscanthus I got from them. It has the purest white variegation I have ever seen on a grass and only gets 4'x4'. I have never seen Nichols Garden Seed and Nursery (Oregon) mentioned on this forum. They have a really great selection of flower, herb, perennial, and vegetable seed, their prices are reasonable and their packets have a generous amount of seed in them. I tried them after reading "The Bountiful Container" a couple years ago. Their seed packets had so much seed in them, that I have pretty well given them my allegiance ever since. I would also give high ratings to Forest Farm, Greer Gardens (the biggest plants I have ever received from any company), Plant Delights, Old House Gardens, Brent and Beckys Bulbs (a few perennials too), High Country, and Lazy S's. All these companies have excellent products and customer service. When I need large amounts of seeds of a kind, I order from Hazzards Greenhouse. They are a wholesale company, but do not have a minimum order requirement. Their seed is of an excellent quality and you can save ALOT of money if you need at least 250 seed of a kind. (With careful storage, I have been able to use one pack of marigolds three years in a row now.) I have also ordered plants from E-bay over the years. Once and only once was I ever dissatisfied. I'm excited for everything that I've winter sown! Some aren't new to me, but they were ones that I had difficulty germinating last year. Evening Primrose Bleeding Hearts Gaillardia Bells of Ireland 3 Dianthus varieties Delphinium Ladybells Carnations Texas Redbud Clematis Texas Bluebonnet Echinacea Balloonflower Aster varieties Sedge Wild Bergamot Jacob's Ladder Eastern Bluestar Persicaria Garlic chives Breadseed poppies @ docmom: I planted delphinium last year during the spring and they never made it past their second set of leaves. I randomly tossed a seed or two into an urn with petunias in it during the summer, and sure enough it sprouted and eventually bloomed in October. It's doing great now. I recently transplanted it because a mum had taken over. A week later and no issues with it at all. I'm beginning to wonder if their poor record is a bit over exaggerated. We'll see. What else is new? Well, my daughter spread seeds all over my yard... I don't know what seeds and where they were planted. So that will be new... So far she's pretty excited to see her basil seeds (planted this time in a pot) growing. My lavenders seeded themselves and there's several new seedlings scattered in the front yard. Same thing happened with the ladies mantle. I've been gathering them up to put them in individual pots. I think I may have enough for plant sale in the fall.. Either that, or I will have to splurge on a cold frame. Actually the idea of a cold frame is not bad. I need to divide some plants in the fall, including the siberian irises, shasta daisies, make cuttings of my hydrangeas... hmmn. Does anyone know where I can buy one? What else is new? A pair of tree swallows has taken over the bird house - so I will be seeing young birds in the near future. Got to go. I will try reposting that photo when I get home. Ianna

I got 3" pots of celosia, alyssum, coleus, and iris(don't know if they are Dutch or Bearded) from a landscaper friend of mine and all are growing healthy. Here are my other plants: two lilacs - one died, the other growing good and healthy S facing fence Celosia pulled when they died but wow they are beauties so I will plant them again White alyssum has a nice scent which I can't describe, the purple one has none. Will someone please tell me how to propagate them. They are planted on my north facing wall. Iris flowered last spring hoping they will flower again next year. My favorite is clematis as soon as the one I planted in the fall of 2004 showed the most beautiful blooms I had ever seen. So this year I planted more and have 44 planted in my 800 or so sq. ft. of garden with a few more coming this spring. 3 bush and 3 tree peonies - the trees all bloomed, but none of the bushes bloom at all. Rose of Sharon standard form on container growing good and bloomed all summer in direct sunlight. Tulips and daffodils all rotted last 2004 (heavy rain on clay soil) so the replacements were planted this fall so I hope to see some blooms this spring. I now have a raised garden because nothing seems to grow on our clay soil. Fraxinus Americana and Fraxinus Pennsylvanica are planted in my front lawn - mostly clay but it now has a drain system. What are my chances that they will not die as we are having lots of rain again this year? Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated especially plants good for clay soil as my north facing wall only has a 6 inch raised bed. This year I added a few more columbine and a couple of hardy kiwis. The kiwis did not like the cold trellis I had for them to climb (we had freezing temps 2 nights in a row) , but otherwise are doing ok. I also added liatris.

I planted another peach tree on arbor day! Otherwise, my gardens really need to be cleaned up because they weren't well-tended for the last two years (I hurt my neck & back) -- so I'm *removing* and rearranging plants, not adding any! :p

We just planted a purple emperor butterfly bush in-between two golden euonymus. They are beautiful!

Nothing new yet this year. I'm in a move things around state. Things that have overgrown their space or would look better in another spot. Some things needed dividing so that's another chore. And I've decided I like to have some annuals mixed in with my perennials so some blank spots have been filled in with those. I did try to get some coreopsis 'Jethro Tull' but my local garden center didn't have it - despite it being listed on their website. Ah well.

One thing I have seen everywhere this year that's new is a red leaved geranium - I don't have it in my spreadsheet yet, so don't know the name. Very pretty, though, I put it in a somewhat shady spot among the roses.

I added that 'Jethro Tull' coreopsis last year, and it's in bud now, can't wait to see it bloom. Also added 'Big Bang Cosmic Eye' coreopsis, not doing quite as well but coming.

I too add annuals among the perennials, I have a bunch of different calendulas, 2 very tiny "Kiss me over the garden gate" which are doing ok, some moonflowers and morning glories, a number of 4-o-clocks (which perennialize in the Hershey, PA area, wish they did that for me!), some sunflowers, some fragrant nicotianas, a bunch of zinnias (cactus flowered) and nasturtium, and marigolds. All of the annuals are from seed - craziness, I think I may be out of control! Also some poppies, but I need a better spot for them, they are cramped and I don't think they'll do much.
