2012 Western NY Plant Swap (9th Annual) Invites are out!

I just sent invites to the 9th Annual Western NY Plant swap this morning.

Looking forward to a great time as usual! If you have not attended, it's always a great time, and a great opportunity to meet other gardeners in the area! The swap is held in Hamlin, NY (midway between Buffalo and Rochester) and is open to anyone who would like to attend. We have a plant swap, pot luck, and a Yankee gift exchange (optional).

If you are interested in attending but did not receive an invite, or if you would like more information, let me know!

Snowdrops in full bloom all over town now. Ginny: Yes...the storm about 2 weeks before was indeed snow...everywhere. But there was a storm between that one and the Bilzzard of 78 which was rain in southern New England. That intervening storm is called the "Great Blizzard of 1978" in the Midwest. The link I provided describes the details. If you look closely at the weather map it shows southern New England in the warm sector---rain. That storm melted a lot of the snow from the 1st blizzard away--even in metro Boston. Most people just don't remember this one because it was rain. But it was a storm of historic magnitude in terms of barometric pressure and snowfall in the Midwest. That intervening storm was a blessing for us because it melted some (or all depending on your location) of the snow from that first blizzard....and then our Blizzard of 1978 happened about 1 week after that! Stumbled on this elsewhere and thought this would be a valuable tool in our planning. "About eight months ago, Mapmuse.com began a project -- the interactive mapping of garden centers and nurseries across the country. They initially researched and populated these maps ourselves, with the idea in mind that the public would subsequently add to, and enhance, the information provided. They mapped each garden center or nursery, and provided space for a written description, photo, and link to a web site. Since this project was launched, gardening enthusiasts have made 100s of additions and enhancements to our maps. If you know of any garden centers or nurseries in your local community that are new or have closed in the last six months, please make those changes to the maps. Also, please feel free to add any places that are still missing. They also have a searchable map and listing of local public gardens and arborerta to visit that gives a good basic listing for our region." The site even has the ability to bring up a map showing the actual location.

Dear Tara ...and anyone attending this years Garden Swap. Another year with hopes of attending the Garden swap and another year my plans got screwed! Unfortunatly in my line of work...I am on call and can't predict what I am doing from one week to the next. Its my job but ...what can you do. So needless to say I am gonna miss meeting you all again. This year I will make sure I stop by and drop off the plants I plan to bring to Penny. It doesn't matter to me if I get any in return ....I just want to do my part and share....Well what I really want is to be there...But that ain't gonna happen...Sorry Tara, Sorry Penny , Sorry everyone!

Hello :D I am Marie and live in Wyoming (the only WY person on these forms I think LOL) I have 2 children: Son is 25 and is blessing me with my first Grandbaby in April :) and my daughter just turned 16. Besides quilting and other crafts, I am an avid FOOTBALL fan (my friends & family say it is more of an obsession) and love to fish. I attempted sewing on my Grandmothers antique trendle machine, yes the ones before electricity with a leather belt. It was great fun but didn't really accomplish anything per say, I still have it but it is just for looks now. I really didn't get interested in sewing until I was pregnate with my son. I made my first one out of 2 - 2yd pieces of blue/white plaid cotton and dark blue flannel for the back. I bought satin binding, hand sewed every thing on and hand tied it with plain white yarn, then made one similar for my son but with little boy print for the front. I still have them and use the blue one for watching movies with my daughter. My Mom's, mom gave me all of her counted cross stitch books and I did that for the most part with a little crocheting/knitting until 3 or 4 years ago. I decided to try making a quilt with blocks after checking out this site and have been hooked ever since. I enjoy being in the Quilt RR and BB Block exchange - learning something new all the time. I love to be outside and grow just about everything: veggies and all types of flowers in the summer (LOVE Daylilys & Iris) and have lots of house plants and will try any type of seed. I have 6 Avacodo's growing now - not sure what I am going to do with them all when they get to be TREE's but they are fun. Oh, a new one sprouted last week and has 3 sprouts from one seed! very cool IMO I really enjoy seeing what others are doing - gives me great idea's for new projects. I have 5 to 10 going at an given time to keep from getting bored. I decided to go back to school for Archaeology this fall, I'm enjoying myself but it sure does cut into my crafting/quilting time... So my goal for this weekend it to finish up the September BB's and also my RR row and center. Have a great weekend all! I haven't potted up much but I do have a couple of weigela 'Red Prince cuttings rooted potted and starting to develop flower buds so they may still be blooming by the swap.

I also have quite a few starts of Phlox paniculata (Tall garden Phlox)

I should have some Cuphea ignea 'David Verity'. Great in the pot or inground in full sun. Likes lots of water and great hummer plant. Very difficult to find in western NY if at all. That is all I have done so far.

PBL, I can't send the invite by clicking on your name because it uses a fill in form and hides your email. The invites are sent through an external site so I need to enter in your email address there.

Either click on my name and send me your email address through the fill in form, or I sent you a message, you can simply reply to that. Whichever is easier! Hope you can join us!

Hi everyone, I rsvp'd also. I have not posted in forever but I've been lurking. I have grasses to share if anyone is interested, some hosta, tiger eyes sumac, etc. cant wait to see everyone. Glen.

I couldn't find a date so I hope I haven't missed it! Message sent (I hope) requesting an invite. I'll have to see what I can round up to bring...I KNOW I have Japanese Quince volunteers for sure.

I am not sure if anyone will catch this, I looked for a "what I'm bringing" type thread and didn't find one. I am looking for some Rosa Rugosa, not fussy about color but looking for one of the hybrids that will be a repeat bloomer.

I should be able to split my spiderwort (deep purple), and dig some wild white violets. I have two small rose of sharon too, and some day lilies and hosta...and quince for sure, I always seem to have that to dig. Some glad bulbs I never planted...and I could dead head some poppy seed heads...hmm...
