coyotes revisited

There was a lot of discussion several months ago about coyotes in NY. Well I was sitting on my front porch at 4:50 in the morning drinking a cup of coffee when a coyote ran across my front yard and into the shadows between two houses across the street. I had a really good look at him as he loped across the grass from the street light above. This is right off Niagara Falls, Blvd at the border of North Tonawanda and Wheatfield. He was probably about 20-25 ft. away. The irony of it was that I was just sitting there thinking of the different wildlife I usually see at that early hour (usually rabbits or skunks) when he came barreling through.

Penny, that coyote was probably thinking the exact same thing that you were. Only he calls it his breakfast.

Inspected this morning and found it had not revisited my tomatoes. However something (same animal?) had a feast on my leafiest brussels sprouts plant. This was not the work of worms (which I have also had) - entire leaves were gone to the stem. It also pigged out on my zinnia plants, the three on the row perimeters. Munched the bud heads right off. Again, I've had insect problems on some of these plants, but I don't think a Japanese beetle could do this type of damage. See photos. Whatever is doing this new damage has to be fairly tall as some of the zinnia and brussels leaf damage is at least two feet high. The zinnias are surrounded by cayenne and jalapeno plants, which were of course untouched. This reminded me that some people use pepper spray to deter animals. Anyone had luck with this? I know you have to re-apply after rain. Homemade? Store bought? I'm willing to try anything!!! Tho a fence is a last resort. Not sure

I live in an extraordinarily dry climate in the rocky mountain foothills. Never a problem with fungus or mold. Of course, I cut off the corners, but I doubt that would save you in Maryland. Its true you can't completely surround the fruit most of the time. Until my last crop, it was enough, though. What happened last crop was the peaches did fine until they began to bulge past the opening at the top. We also had an infestation of apple maggots which is a new development here. I don't know if that was what they were, or just the second or third generation of codling moths. I would pre-staple the top about one third of the way down. Of course I would make sure the bag was zipped on that one third. Then I pull the bag tight on the peach against the staple. zip and staple as close to the fruit as I could. I toyed with the idea of getting a special dedicated stapler, then taking my angle grinder or somehow cutting off the part of the stapler past the anvil as close to the anvil as I could get. I think that would really allow me to scrunch up there. Perhaps next year. This year I am slicing off only maybe 2/3 of the lip of plastic past the ziploc, in hopes that that will help. Growing organically (if you count putting disposable plastic bags on every single fruit as 'organic') is a game of inches. The bags work very well with our birds. We also have a lot of crows here. I've never seen them bother the fruit, but they don't allow other birds to hang around and get too creative--that's the crow department.

I sat on my bench today in the early morning sunshine, reading Garden Junk posting follow-ups I had copied on my printer and drinking my morning coffee. Very relaxing...until a squirrel jumped on the back of the bench and seemed to be yelling at me, "What are you doing on MY bench!" LOL

There is a new (at least for me) deer repellent product called Repellex Tablets. These tablets are about the size of butterscotch candy and you bury them 2 inches into the roots of your plants or bushes. There is a formula that specifies how many you should use depending on the size of the plant. Generally a quart size perennial needs 1 tablet. A large hosta might need 6. Anyway, the tablets begin to degrade after a month or so and the deterrent (both smell and taste) is absorbed systemically into the plant. The deterrent lasts an entire season in perennials or annuals. Supposedly the deterrent lasts two seasons for bushes and trees. So far I am amazed. The deer only took one bite of one of my hostas and that was it! They have not re-visited my garden yet this year.

Last year while inside looking out at about 5:20 a.m. I saw one trot very stiff legged down my street which quickly caught my eye. Because of his shaggy coat, thin legs, and stiff front legs, I knew it was not a dog but a coyote. However, I wondered why in my neck of the woods? I'm very urban at Hopkins/Maple in Amherst, NY near the Millard Fillmore Hospital with just one house after another. Than I thought we do live about 1/2 mile away from a small swamp/nature preserve area. I truly was thrilled to see him and am still amazed that such nature in this heavily occupied area! Must be all we humans who keep cutting away at the local wooded areas for more monster sized homes that is causing the displacement.

Ginny,
I am right off Niagara Falls Blvd so our location is just about as busy as yours. We also have a natural wetland about a mile away and some woods here and there but it really caught me off guard but to tell you the truth I enjoyed seeing it. After doing quite a bit of reading, it was probably a femaie with new babies to feed.

That's amazing that you both have seen them. Now if they would just visit my neighborhood, lots of evil rabbits are over here.

Remy this may be why I don't see many rabbits anymore out this way. Even the squirrel population seems to be down this year.

My mother and I take alot of trip to Akwesasne Casino in Malone, New York from Lake Placid. It seems that everytime we go past Barnum Pond, by Paul Smith's College, we see wildlife. We have seen 3 coyotes, a snoeshoe rabbit, fox, and alot of whitetail deer. I took some great photos of a doe that stood about 4 feet away from the car, letting me take her picture, while other deer were just walking down the middle of the road. The last trip we took, I had given up on any good photos, shut off my camera, when, a coyote ran across the street in front of our car. I missed a great shot. Maybe next time. By the way, I'm still waiting to see a moose.

We have lots of them in West Seneca...have seen them here and there...from what our Animal Control Officers have told me they move around a lot...but they have had to go in and destroy some dens...think with all of our development we are just moving them and others out of their habitat.

Coyotes are adaptive learners. They adjust to their surroundings. I lived in AZ for awhile and saw plenty of them all over. Moved to IL saw a few now and again and then moved back to NYS and was very surprised to see them here.
Our area is peppered with black bear. It's almost more likely you will see a black bear roaming the neighborhoods as a coyote.
Watch your roadkill. We normally have alot of it. Fast trucks and wildlife don't mix well. Lately the amount of carcasses you see along the roadside is almost nonexsistant except for the larger deer. Usually this means the garbage collectors of the wildlife group, the coyotes have been busy at work. They leave nothing along the road way. A easy meal for them is preferred to going after someones ca. dog or chickens.

My mom saw one in the village of lancaster NY in her backyard. She found a duck head in her yard later (ew)
