Jay did you get anything shipped back to try in the greenhouse? Was that little durian coming to ohio or back to the property? Are there any areas of the land that stay a bit dryer? That sucks to have property in an area where all of this stuff should do well and still not be able to grow a lot of it.

Great pics. How's the santol taste like? I was hoping that it's good. But it seems like you didn't like it.

John, the area around the perimeter of the land is probably six feet higher than the middle. That's where I put the new plant.

Like I mentioned earlier...I was in the process of purchasing several plants to ship back. Just didn't follow thru. Wasn't anything really new that I "needed" or had to have. Durian, longan, and lychee cannot be exported.

Ch3rri...santol was okay but certainly nothing to get exicted about. There is all that flesh but there seems to only be a small portion that has any decent flavor. The flesh clings to the seed like no other I've ever experienced. You would probably either wear your teeth down or just pass out thru exhaustion trying to clean off the seed. That nursery gave us a bagful to take with us. The bite you saw me holding in the pic was the ONLY piece of santol I took in the whole trip. Just wasn't worth it when we had so many other delicious fruit to choose from. Beautiful tree though.

Hopefully the new one makes it. Are the durian cheap like everything else seems to be over there? Do you think maybe cutting the taproot may help with some plants? Maybe it would make the roots spread out instead of heading down? How many trees do you think you lost all together?

Do you know why those three trees are not allowed to be exported?

Did you get the longkong? You should get that tree here since it's so hard to get one in the US. Import another rambutan...:)

They lost all but one jackfruit...4-6 trees and a few durian each time they try them. They can't seem to get rambutan to get going there either. We didn't cut the tap root on this one due to the height we put it at. That stuff down in the middle is loamy and doesn't seem to hold onto the roots all that well.

I think a lot of it has to do with the water table and that will need addressed one day. Another factor is how some of these plants were put into the ground. The gardner planted many trees very deep...soil was way above the rootball. This did them no good either. If I had my way, I would dam up the canals for good and have more soil brought in with a decent slope angling down to the front of the property. Have it drain to the pond and pumped out. Not much I can do about it while I'm here.

Man, if it were me I don't even know if I could handle even going to a tropical fruit nursery knowing that I would not be able to bring home everything that I wanted. I remember the first time I went to Puerto Rico. They had no problems with you bringing anything home that you wanted. I guess now they have changed there policies. Thanks for the great pics. I especially liked the pics of the huge airlayers. I nver would have though that you could even do an airlayer so big. Did you find out how long it took before they could be cut and planted?

Nice photos, those air layers are freakin amazing, tree sized, ready to fruit.

It'll be interesting to see how Warren's plants handle the shipping and inspection, couldn't imagine the temptation with all those plants available.
