Thailand Pics - Day 2 for real

Not sure what was happening with Gardenweb's servers but posting earlier was obviously not successful. So I'll try again.

First day was in Chantaburi. Before leaving on day 2, we visited a huge mangrove project sponsored by the king. It was neat but soon got old. All mangroves looked alike and the theme never changed.

On to Rayong and the fruit farm of Paiboon, home of the ancient mangosteens.

I see you have Mangosteens (The "Queen" Of Fruits) to even out the heatiness of the The "King" Of Fruits.

Never gotten the chance to taste one yet. They ripen early over there and long before we usually visit. I have a Kai and Mayong Chid in the greenhouse I got from Frankies last year. I've lost a few prior to these... mostly from something stupid I did and another I'm still scratching my head. Need to be careful because ma-in-law says they should be protected from the sun for quite some time. They are slow growing. My two are on the brink of a flush but has stalled due to the low light winter days. The seedling I have planted with each have flushed a few times. I will approach graft them onto the main plant once they begin to flush for real. I can't remember if Excalibur had a grafted one or not. I really wanted one at the time since I had recently lost one. I did not come away from there with it so if they did indeed have one, it must not have looked very good. They did have plenty of seedlings and they all were very nice. I did get one of those. The other seedling came from Montoso Gardens.

Thailand has a great culture of gardening, I'm surprised you're not looking locally for what is grown there. Being on an island, apart from year round warm temperatures you'd also have very high humidity. Most plants you were accustomed to seeing in the UK wouldn't cope there. But your gardener should be able to indicate what would. I live in a climate which is relatively similar to yours, except not an island and a bit inland, so it gets hotter here and also colder, although rarely anything around 10C. But the biggest problem during the dry season (winter) is the heat and low humidity. That's not a good combination for many plants, although it does mean some summer mediterranean climate veggies we can grow during winter. But I'd say your humidity would prevent that. Most of the durian we tried was very good. Kop Maethao, Chanee, Kan Yao, Enark were all good. I even had a small piece of Montong at one of the festivals and it was pretty good...even though we stayed away from this variety the entire trip...trying to keep with the better or odd varieties. Not my favorite and I certainly couldn't eat a lot of it at once, but I did enjoy it. Warren, on the other hand, was fanatical about it. We called him "durian boy"!

Coralred...we had mangosteens available no matter when or where. Father-in-law kept fruit with us everywhere we went, even when we went out to dinner. Soon as the meal was over, out came the fruit!! As much as I love them? I was almost mangosteen'd to death!

Also, the weather contributed to a bunch of very bad mangosteens this season. We learned that heavy rains at certain times of fruit development will lead to either gamboge invading the flesh, or flesh turning hard and transluscent. I was throwing away 1 out of maybe 5 or so mangosteens, sometimes more.

When eating mangosteens, we always looked for the larger seeds. We also stopped trying to use our teeth trying to remove all the flesh from the seed. The seed coat would stain your upper and lower teeth. So when you smiled or showed your teeth, you looked like you've been chewing tobacco or something!! It's nasty looking. However, you'd be surprised at how many fruit did not have seeds or were immature.

I emailed Gardenweb to remove that other post. Hopefully they will get rid of it soon to avoid confusion.

Wife's sister loaded up the "forgotten" pics to DVD and shipping out today. So we'll all just have to wait for them! I'll continue to post the rest as soon as I get them loaded up.

Don't think I could do the bug eating. Maybe you have finally found a use for the thrips in the greenhouse...

thank you very much for sharing those pics! I have two questions:

I didn't understand, did Warren take the plants by plane, or was somebody going to send him the plants to US? How many plants?

Do you know why asians multi rootstock the fruit trees?! I've seen many pics of an indonesian guy with multi rootstocked durian. The describtions were all in indonesian language, and google gives me confusing translations :-))

The plants were going to be shipped back once he updated his USDA permits...which he already had. He bought a total of 22 plants. Average price was probably in the neighborhood of $3 per plant. They each would have cost around $50 here!

Multiple rootstock is done for a variety of reasons. One of the principle ones is for stability. More roots mean a more stable plant in high wind areas. Another main reason is for plant vigor. More roots/multiple donors means more push to the main plant. Could mean faster growth, mature earlier with earlier fruiting. Even in Thailand, these plants will normal cost double or more and are not always easily found. Look up Bernie Dizon's site. There are lots of great articles on this technique.

yeah, i know how cheap things in thailand are! if it wasn't for logistics and permits.. last time i only took a few seeds and a bag full of mangosteen! lol!

i hope the plants make the long journey to usa. i know a german guy who sells plants online and he shipps plants from thailand, too. he told me that not all plants survive the shipping... i cross the fingers for warren ;-)
