What 's your experience with these plants

I went to aplant sale saurday and got soem more plants. I am so excited because they were all plants I have wanted for a while.

Any way since these are all new plants to me any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Randia Formosa-(3gal) with fruit on it!

Desmos chinensis-(3gal)

Fragraea berteriana (small)

I can help you on 2 of them:

Tabernaemontana holstii is also called T. pachysiphon. It has larger leaves, and it's flowers have 5 strap, crinkled petals and it's fragrant. to look best, no more that partial sun (dapple sun through a high pine tree canopy is good), and it like fertile and moist soil (so do use mulch!) A slightly acidic soil is better as it will prevent the leaves from slightly yellowing, i use the good palm fertilizer to make sure there's always ample micro nutirnets for it.

Fagraea berteriana is known as Pua Kenikeni. It can handle full sun, better with relief from mid summer sun in afternoon! and make sure has enough soil moisture. It may get rather large for a shrub (upwards of 8-10') kinda rounded inshape, but still with floppy branches, flowers are fragrant too.

I noticed too that you're in zone 9. Make sure you give both these plants a protected spot, as I know they won't handle a freeze well--heck maybe not even 33 degrees.

Veimar.. Sing, talk, heck dance with your plants..whichever method works is all that matters. I'd love to attend a group or university where plant studies are done. Are you familiar with Calatheas? Leaves move suddenly like their cousin, Maranta, 'Prayer Plant.' I had one Calathea with large leaves that jerked suddenly and fiercely, one leaf would occasionally knock down a smaller, neighboring plant. I don't know why it didn't happen before. Many mysteries in this old world. Please don't get me started about people who buy plants or BIRDS to match furniture. Laura, I'm okay, thank you. It's too bad your work hours are so long. Or maybe not. Don't you love people who know their minds? lol. Laura, you're joking, but I knew a few people who's s/o's were jealous of everything including inanimate objects. Rodden, can't say I blame you. 5-months of winter! Summer 2013 through winter was the worse, coldest. I think we had 2-weeks in the 90's then back to cool. I thought OK was dry??? Low humidity? I can deal with heat, but when temps rise over 100F, I need more than a fan and open windows. Don't like a/c though. Plants are on stand-still when temps get too hot. Since you have rocky soil, you'd definitely need to amend. What about succulents grown in-ground? Agave, Optuntia? My niece lives in Lake Zurich, but she has artificial plants. lol. Sorry about your mom. I imagine your winters are nicer than our spring...warm enough for potted plants to be outside. What type of plants interest you? Laura, VA got hit with 13" of snow? I've had better luck growing orchids than I thought I would. I like to say they are just more "exacting" in their requirements than say, a dracaena. But admittedly, I have loads of sun here - over 350 days a year) I've had 40+ orchids for about 5 yrs. now, and have stopped trying to grow the more difficult types. But the oncidium family seems to do well for me. So do the Miltonias and hybrids of those. Catts also have done well. I can't grow phals for very long, as they always seem to rot sooner or later (usually after I've had them for 2-3 years, and am attached). Paphs can be temperamental too. I stopped concentrating mainly on orchids and have "branched out," so to speak, to other house plants, (even though I've had common house plants for the last 30+ yrs) and am finding it rewarding. I'm sorry I picked up six Rex begonias a year ago, as they are just now starting to decline. They did so well until now. But its summer, and the humidity is so low, even though I have pebble trays and mist a lot. I've been trying to stick to the easier plants, because when I get a reward (blooms, new growth, etc) I am encouraged to keep trying. Its what keeps my passion going. Yesterday morning my little LC orchid presented me with a bloom! It was a tiny baby when I got it, so this was quite a pleasant surprise. Toni talked me into trying a hibiscus, and boy. . . I never expected what I got! It opens a new bloom almost daily this time of year, and really does bloom just about year round. In winter the blooms aren't quite as frequent, but the plant has been a joy. I also got my first plumerias not long ago, and am trying morning glories too. There are so many possibilities out there! And you never know if you can grow something until you try it! Randi

Blackie, so it is...Thanks. I have it listed wrong on my chart. Suzy, Good memory. They promised scaffolding (and is one reason why I picked them), but they did not come through. They did temporary ladder to ladder scaffolding from time to time, but there was still constant ladders in and out of all the beds. The tri-clematis wall was the tightest space and got the most damage, but I'm hoping the plants will be back to normal next year. They also stepped on an emerging martagon lily that suffered a lot. And some emerging hosta tips got bent resulting in torn foliage. And this was with them being extra careful where they stepped due to the obsessive gardener/homeowner in their midsts! If we could have done it in March as planned, it would have been fine. The timing was super close. Mounting the painted trellises back up on the wall was the very last step. Niobe was growing in leaps and bounds those last few days. The bottom of the trellis was covered in Niobe as soon as it was mounted. The bad part about the painting job is that they might have to come back in the fall to redo some spots that the primer did not adhere to well and got some blistering. I think I would rather take the risk of the paint peeling than have to deal with painters again :-)

I live in 9b or 10a and I live on a small pond so that can help a little with the weather.

I am going to keep the Desmos Chinensis and the Fragraea berteriana in a pot so I can bring them in if I need to.

The Tabermontana holstii I will keep in a pot until it gets a little bigger- unless you think it would do better in the ground.

The Randia Formosa I would like to put in the ground. It is in a 3 gallon pot now and they told me it needs to go in the ground because it is to big for the pot it is in now.The Randia is also covered in fruit right now and I would like to try them but they are not ripe yet. Do you think if I planted them that they would drop their fruit?

Yes, I got them from Sid Gardino. I have got alot of plants from him and they have always done great!

Tabernaemontanas make great plants for larger containers. YOu can perfec their pH and moisture conditions while giving them the perfect spot for light and air cirulcation. They will not get out of hand in a patio container--say 25 gallon or larger.
