Can chemical toxins from plastic containers leach into tomatoes?

Lately I have been hearing a lot of buzz about toxic chemicals in plastics  especially baby products (those of you with children will know what IÂm talking about). So IÂve switched all my plastics to "safe" plastics or other materials that are free of the harmful chemicals. Most of these plastics have a recycling arrows symbol with a number. Apparently the numbers 3, 6 and 7 contain the most harmful chemicals. So that got me thinking about some of the plastic containers I use to grow tomatoes. I have these very large, black plastic containers that work very well. These containers have no symbols on them to indicate which kind of plastic theyÂre made of, but I assume that since they were not made to hold food, that they would contain the harmful kind of plastic. So do you think these black, plastic containers sitting in the heat of the sun all day would leach chemicals into the soil, therefore contaminating the food I grow in them?
