Cage AND stake?

This is my 3rd summer growing tomatos. I've previously used the cages that are like an inverted cone, but I find that my tomatos grow much bigger than the 48" cages I have. Then, the tops of the plant bend over the top rim of the cage. I've read about staking the plants, but I understand pruning reduces yield (though I generally prune the suckers that appear where the main trunk meets a side branch).

I thought I'd stake AND cage: I'd use 6' stakes so the tops of the plants don't droop, but use the cage for the bulk of the plant so I don't have to prune and fruit bearing branches. Does this make sense? I'd be happy to hear ideas from the experienced tomatologists out there.

Thanks,

Guy
