coffee seed germination

Since the dog destroyed my coffee tree that was just starting to bear and my dad has one too I was wondering how I would go about planting one of the cherries - or seeds - from his plant. How ripe does it need to be, what type soil, etc.

They can be a pain... they don't like to be buried in the soil, and can take 3 months to germinate. So, take normal potting soil, keep it warm, maybe cover it with plastic to keep the humidity up... then wait.

My experience with coffee beans is that the fresher the beans, the faster the sprout. I picked a couple off a bush once, and they sprouted within a week or so. When I've mail-ordered seed, I've been lucky if one or two sprout after a month, if at all. If you have access to the beans on the bush, just wait until the berry is ripe (turns red). Then remove the pulp from the seed, and do the hot-water pour over, soak over night routine before planting. If you have a heat mat or some other way to keep the soil temperature up, that will help. Other than that, they seem pretty eager to sprout when they're fresh. Good luck!

Hey, thanks, Linda. I've tried winter sowing with disastrous results so the coffee filter thing is my latest attempt to succeed at something with seeds! Can you tell me more about your method? For instance, do you use tea or hydrogen peroxide after you sow them, what kind of medium do you sow in when using pots, do you refrigerate overnight for regular seeds (not those needing stratification...I'll be starting a new thread later for that), do you seal up the baggie or poke holes in it, and where do you put them afterward? I'm not sure if all of the ones on my first list here are ok in dark or not. Thanks a lot for the tips.

Celery.. No cover light required for germination at 70F taking 10-17 days.....Rutabaga/turnip light cover temp 70F taking 7-14 days to germinate.....Carrot light cover soil temp 64-72F taking 10-21 days....Lettuce light cover soil temp 65-70F taking 6-10 days to germinate. Many inserts for growing seedlings are 1 inch deep but others for starting trees are 6 inches deep & may be used for starting root crops.Starting in a cold frame is common & instead of using FRESH manure on the surface I use it & cover with 1-2 incches of sand & it generates a lot of heat. A light bulb will also help. Also look on the package it gives time to maturity ....pick those varities with with the shortest time to maurity. I hope this helps

I prescrub the seeds in a sieve and add alot of water to the sieved gel juice. About half the time it takes 3 days at room temperature but sometimes up to 5. It is a lot less messy, time consuming and disgusting to do a little cleaning on the font end. No nasty sludge/floating mold to deal with. I use 16 oz deli containers with lids, but ziplock bags work just fine in an emergency. I've left seed in for a week many times with no sprouting, the ones that did sprout were sprouted on day 4. Sometimes seeds sprout inside the fruit, generally in store bought fruit possibly from long term storage, so I wouldn't rush to take half fermented seeds out just because you are afraid of sprouting, its going to happen, rarely, or not.

The heating pad for the back is on mid setting, and 7 inches above the soil. The germination station is of a larger design, so the plants can get taller before replanting. In any event, the top of the soil feels comfortably warm and moist. I decided put the top heating pad on low now. I"ll see how the soil feels tonight, then adjust as needed. There are only 3 settings on the pad. I'll never use the high setting.

Hey my name is Bobby and I have 4 raw coffee beans in a small lid with water in it, I placed them there on Friday last week and now I see a light pale spot on the ends of them now, well I bought them from a coffee supplier in Wisconsin earlier this month because Im trying to grow my own plants, but this other site that I visited told me you can't get plants from beans.
