Comments (7)Kyrri, Many years ago I had a Vanilla plant that I grew in a small greenhouse. I found a piece of palmetto log that was about 3 feet tall and hollowed out on one end. I stood it up like a stump, and filled the hollow end with the orchid fir bark mix I used on most of my adult plants. I planted the plant in the mix, and treated it like all my other orchids. It would grow over the side of the stump, and just before it got to the ground, I would drape it over the top of the stump again. When the plant got older, it would bloom occasionally on the down hanging parts of the vine. If you are growing it outside, you will find that the roots are just as happy as terrestrials, a as they are as air roots, and the plant will quickly establish itself as a planted fixture where ever you put it. Since my greenhouse was portable, I had to be very carful not to let mine establish itself. I would gently train the air roots back up and into the orchid mix inside the stump. Vanilla does prefer to bloom on a down hanging vine, but it does not have to hang really far down to give a few blooms. There is a definite "trick" to pollinating the flowers, and it will fool you every time until you learn just where to find the real stigmatic surface. Curing the beans is a very involved and difficult process, and unless you have a very large number of them it is not practical. Hope this helps. Bill...See MoreVanilla Orchid Care?
Comments (17)travis Be careful what you wish for . I grew one in a sh and it took over half the area !! lol I found that it MUST climb and allowed to grow or it will not flower. Even if it does the flower lasts less than a day , if you want the beans they must be hand pollinated and then processed to release the flavor In the same amount of space you could grow a dozen more productive orchids particularly if you must bring it in for winter. If interested in vining types check out some of the "Jewel" orchids while the flowers are not much the leaves have incredible varagation and they are VERY civilized. Or you could grow some of the temperates that require cool/cold rest periods should do fantastic in your area. There are some cultivars of vanilla while having the same habits they have varagated leaves to look at while waiting for those flowers ??lol I recently bought a variety that has white edges as well as a rose colored stripe down the middle. I put it out in the garden to climb a Cassia tree. It's fighting it out with a split leaf philo and a shingle plantlol Good luck with whatever you decide gary...See MoreVanilla orchid potting mix and care
