I've had a medinilla magnífica for about 5 years and it gets a few flowers in summer, I keep the soil moist and
spray it with water everyday. It is in a patio with plenty light but no direct sun. It is in a large container.The temperature here is quite warm. Equivalent to Zone 10b.

One thing Medinilla's require is humidity. Daily misting is important..Soil should be rich, yet well-draining..plant/roots do NOT like sitting in water. Bright light is important w/some direct sun.
Some Meninilla's bloom in summer and others in winter, It's a beauty of a plant, so do what you can to save it..
Have you fertilized? If so, with what and when? BTW, if plant flowers, try misting w/o spraying flowers. Are the brown leaves a soft or crispy brown? Toni

I water the plant when I feel that the ground is not humid on top when I touch it, Do you think I shoudl water more even if I feel the ground is still moist? I keep the plant indoors with plenty of light though not directly. And the leaves that are turning browm are crispy. If you want to I can make a picture of it and show you.
What kind of fertilizer would you recommend? I used one that sais NPK 8+8+6 for indoors and balcony plants.

I am happy to hear you have Medinilla magnifica in Sevilla because I have similar climatic conditions than you: I live in Cordoba Ânear Seville-, I wanted to have this plant but I thought it was impossible to me: I will try next spring :-)

I have lived near Sagunto (Valencia) and there is a big difference between Valencia and Cordoba/Seville: the humidity in summer. It can be very low in Cordoba. The temperature in winter can be a little upper here and I can protect my plants too because they are in a patio but the humidity is a problem.
I tried with Medinilla myriantha but it died.

I grow Medinilla indoors, as well, and I place it outdoors during the summer.

I've found, actually, that they don't need an *incredible* amount of humidity, though new growth seems more plentiful with extra humidity, and I do believe that the extra humidity during the summer does help induce blooming.

I'm wondering if yours is receiving *too much* water, as I had read in several references that this plant is 'nearly epiphytic', and that's how I've been growing it...in a very well-aerated, fast draining mix.

It can go quite dry between waterings.

Since you did succeed in blooming the plant, I'm wondering, too, if you've been watering it more, recently, than you had in the past?

I dindt really succed in blooming my Medinilla. It was already bloomed when I got her. I water it a bit more than the rest of my other plants since I read it needs a lot of humidity but I belive I still do something wrong for the plant doesnt show any sign of recovery ( nor has it increased the rate of becoming brown in the edges)
I see that the soil is quite compact I would say, would you recoment to repot in a less compact and more 'airy' mix?

I bought this plant while it was in bloom and stayed like that for a long while. I only watered it when it was dry and left it on my window sill which gets direct and indirect sun. I have it now for a little over a year. When the flowers dropped the leaves were big and a beautiful green. A few months ago my leaves started to get brown lines under the leaf and now coming through the top of the leaves and they are curling. There is no sign of bugs or scaling. I don't know what it is or what to do. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it because I don't want to lose this plant. I wrote to the website and they still haven't responded, so no help there.

My medenilla has been in a pot about 10 inches high for 2 years. I only water it from the bottom every 7-10 days. A couple times a year I spray the leaves with orchid food. Then the leaves put on a spurt of growth. It lives inside only. In the Chicago area from May to Nov. in a bright window. Then it goes to Florida until May again. In Florida it is on a glassed in porch. In March it starts putting out new leaves or flowers. Last year it was flowers, this year so far just leaves. When it has flowers it has to be on a plant stand or shelf because the flowers hang way below the bottom of the pot. After it flowers again, I think I will repot it. I think it is the number of daylight hours that tells it to get busy with new growth.

Generally with a lot of tropical plants they don't respond to change in day length. As you get closer to the equator there is insignificant difference it day length over the year. Plants from those regions don't experience much change.

hiera - I'm having almost the exact same problem that you described. Did you ever figure out a solution? Mine is being kept indoors, and moisture seems to be ok.

I just received a plant and am wondering if putting the pot on top of rocks that are in water would help with humidity.

If you make sure the potting soil doesn't get too wet it'd be okay. They can grow as epiphytes in humid conditions but definitely not as a bog plant.
