Pandanus ID?

Hello-

I purchased this Pandanus (Screw Pine) a few months ago, but am not sure which variety it is. I dont believe it is utilus as it does not have the saw toothed leaf edges. I have been thinking it is perhaps a non variegated Pandanus sanderi? Any ideas?

It looks like Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. , if it smell good then that it.. where did you get it from?

I have not noticed a smell from this Pandanus. But, I understand some Pandanus are used as foods?

I bought this one for $6 at a local nursery in Tarpon Springs, FL called Redgrave Nursery (www.redgravenursery.com). I am probably going to get a few more as this one is growing quickly and is already starting to display some of the stilted root behavior that I am anxious to see.

Toni, I told you months ago that your plant was a Pandanus, when you posted photos of it. I found one in an artificial pond, probably someone had ditched it because it was getting too big. There were several trunks up to about 5 or 6 metres tall, growing partly in the water. There were a couple of tiny plants right in the water and they were white, I assumed because of lack of light. Took those home and potted them where they grew larger but still white. They were in full sun and later started to go greener. Now they're totally green but still in the pot. Haven't fertilised them but need to put them in the ground, they're getting to that size. On that El Arish Tropical Exotics page it states theirs is a dwarf form of P. veitchii. I think I've got the full sized one. They're reputed to be quite variable and the variegation unstable. Pandanus don't flower conspicuously in the way of a lot of other plants. The flowers are inconspicuous and mostly you only notice the fruits which are large. In low light the plants will become floppy, but in good light they're upright although often support themselves with prop roots. Kept indoors they'd eventually need staking, unless there were enough pups crowded around to hold them up. What do grow viney are the very closely related Freycinetias, sometimes also called Climbing Pandanus.

Pandanus amaryllifolius is a Tropical plant. They are a bit more sensitive than tomato plants. My plant was in afternoon shade. Remember these are not semi-tropical they are tropical. They like high heat and high humidity. If the air is to cold they die or to dry they die. It can be grown indoors. Outdoors will take some special care unless you have a farm where the evaporation from the fields increases the relative humidity to create a proper micro climate. There are some plants for sale on eBay right now. Don't bother buying from any source outside the USA. I tried twice and customs got it both times.

Hello, I have had a Pandanus o. for the last two years (also purchased at the chinese herbalist in Fortitude Valley) I have it in a pot on the south eastern side of the house where it gets full morning sun but no late afternoon sun at all. Our temps get down to 6 in winter and I do nothing with it other than water once a week approx. It has heaps of pups but I haven't attempted to take any off as they can be tricky to etablish. I am in the western suburbs of Brisbane and our climate has not been humid this last year. Watch carefully for wooly aphids as they can make a mess of pandanus, and keep out of cold winds. Good luck. G'day I am also very keen to find this plant. My mum had one years ago that the dog ripped up, I know she's been sad about it ever since. Its her bday next week and I'd really like to find one beforehand. All the info I've come up with on the web has pointed to nurseries in Darwin/QLD. I suppose its because that is their favoured climate, however I know mums grew ok on the central coast. With the amount of Thai/Malaysian food places in Sydney surely there is somewhere I can find it?

Spockvr6, to tell if it really is Pandanus amaryllifolius. Cut a few leaves and let it dry. Once it dries you would be really able to distinguish a very nice fragrant smell, no mistakes about it.
The smell is very faint on fresh leaves and leaves that aren't cooked/prepared yet.

I did as suggested and cut a leaf off on August 25th and it has been drying ever since. There is no fragrance to it at all.

So, I guess that rules out Pandanus amaryllifolius?

It looks to me like the P. sanderi without the variegation as you suggested. this happens down here fairly often. chris

Brian didn't now what the full botanical name was?
He is usually so efficient on that.

Don't you just love his nursery and prices!

This is one of the rare plants that Brian or Travis couldnt positively ID with 1000% certainty. As you mentioned, this is a rare circumstance! But, based on what others have said and some internet research, I am pretty sure that it is Pandanus sanderi in a non variegated form.

I love going to this nursery and have become quite friendly with Brian and Travis. Their selection and prices are unreal. Thus, much of my yard is filled with palms and plants from there. Its also only about 5-6 miles from my house and I pass it on the way home from work everyday, so I have a convenient excuse to frequently stop there :-)

The problem is, my property is the typically small new construction lot, so I just cant plant everything I see at Redgraves that I would like to without my yard turning into one thick mass of jungle!
