Anyone get damage from last night's storms????

WOW, what an elecrical storm, and lots of rain and wind also. It blew one of our gutters down, but all my plants seem to have survived just fine. I hope no one had damage at their house.

Few cannas kinda beat-up but all is well here! Less than 5miles down the main road a mobile home park flooded and a 4yr old lil girl drowned...so sad!

Not too huge, and even if they are, you will have to root prune them. In the fall, dig them up, root prune them so that you can put them into as large a pot as you can carry or about 12 inch diameter. I assume that is about the size you already have them in, in order to overwinter them anyway. If you miss some roots in the ground, then they will become fodder for the bugs anyway, and will enrich the soil for next year. Alternately, and what I do for some of mine, is plant them into pails with holes cut in the SIDES, not the bottom. Then the entire pail, containing the brug, is planted. I find that when watering, I can direct the water into the pail area, and know that the plant is getting sufficient water. In the fall, I merely take the shovel, and root prune the roots on the outside of the pail, lift the hole pail inside, slip it into another pail of the same size, and voila, I already have the baby in its pot ready for winter. Caroline, I'm so glad you have finally got some relief from the terrible weather you've had. Not that we have had the dreadful time those of you in the south have had to deal with, we've had our share of problems too. Today it is raining buckets, coming down so hard it sounds like hail, not. I can hear the garden sighing a sigh of welcome relief. you can almost hear the soil reaching out to capture every precious drop. The one thing I have learned from this past year is to mulch, mulch, mulch, a good layer of maple shavings on top of newspaper is going to be the name of the game for me. The part of the garden that did not suffer was mulched this way. Next year I'll be out there early on, getting as much mulching done as I can manage. That hurricane sounds like it's going to be another nasty one, PLEASE STAY SAFE EVERYONE, I'm praying for gentle breezes and calm waters for all of you. Annette

Sorry, folks. We had one like that here a few years back that did the same horrific number on the garden. On another hail damage thread, I had tried to remember something that the nursery guys around here swore by for damaged trees - it's that "Superthrive" stuff. It sounds like snake oil, it's sold like snake oil, it looks like snake oil, but several gardeners I really respect and who were almost apologetic in recommending it because it seems so hokey, say that for hail damaged trees and shrubs, it does work wonders. At least it's something to do other than cry.

thanks, douglas! I went outside today, 24 hours after the damage, to assess what looks damaged. Out of 35 tomato plants, only two are wilty looking, my Fourth of July and Mr. Stripey, and then my Pink Brandywine has yellowed leaves but I'm not sure if that's from the frost or if it wasn't doing well ahead of time. I didn't notice it yesterday, so I'm guessing the frost. One of my six Romas is looking questionable, too, but it might need to be watered. Out of my 37 pepper plants and 2 tomatillo plants, everything looks completely green and healthy. Meanwhile, five of my eight cucumber hills are goners and the other three might soon follow. And one of my four basil plants is shriveled. So far, the cukes bore the worst of the frost damage, no question. And after reading posts here about Mr. Stripey's production and the bad taste of Fourth of July tomatoes, perhaps I'm no worse off with those gone. But I do love pink Brandywine tomatoes, so I have to replace that one. Thanks for all the advice. I'll keep you guys posted if more of them die, just so that my original thread becomes something of a reference in itself since I didn't see this topic addressed when I searched for it ahead of time.

Hey all, Thanks for thinking of me. Me and DH are fine but our town did get damage. Channel 5 news cast was out here taking pictures so it might be on the news this evening.
Our ballpark was wiped out and they will have to rebuild it, the bridge that goes across the creek was up lifted, they were trying to repair the bridge but I don't think they're doing a good job of it. They're only taking a big backhoe thing and trying to get the cement road to go back down? I'm not willing to drive on it till it's fixed right.
Some of the neighbors around have water damage to the inside of their homes.
Anyone that's looking to buy a home remember to never get a home that sits lower than other homes. Our house sits up on a small hill but the homes below get all our run off and it's not good.
It is very sad about the little girl, I saw it on the news this morning that she was swept out of her mothers arms. I'm sure she needs prayers to cope with the loss of her baby. Nothing else in the world can be worse than losing a loved one.

I didn't have the tv on so I didn't even know about the storms.
I'm glad you guys are alright.

Lots of rain and it looks like some wind too.
Only damage that I've found is the leaves on one 1/2 of a brug are missing. :)

Hope everyone else is ok. I didn't realize how bad some people had until I saw things on the Drudge Report.

(I don't watch TV news anymore unless something really BIG is going down)

I guess I didn't know about the storms, either. We had just some quiet rain on Sunday, but certainly nothing to cause flooding. It's so odd how just a few miles make such a difference.

I just finished watching the news tonight and saw what happened. How very sad for all concerned, especially that family that lost the child.

The storms hit here about 1am (my hubby works night so we are all night owls during the summer) Our yard drops almost 4 ft from our back door to the fence line and by 2-2:30 our yard at the fence was 2-3 ft underwater!
Haltom city just keeps getting the brunt of things latley -they suffered a tonado a few weeks back during all those other storms.My mom said on the news tonight that the family who lost the 4yr old in last nights storms - ALSO lost another child within the past year (didn't say to what) but I just feel so sorry for them.
