That is about the mix 90% because many gardeners want a plant that will fruit continuously through the season where as you probably already know the bush and determinate type genreally flower and produce one batch of fruit at the same time - great for sauce or canning so you can get your crop grown and canned - other people have space problems like a condo etc and prefer for that reason - some semi-determinate would work also for that reason and give you a longer crop
There are some seed companies that charge less - maybe you will get some recommendations - who have you looked at so far?

That is because that is what most tomato varieties are - indeterminates. ;) By wanting determinates that are early maturity and cold tolerant you will be limiting your choices even more and compacts will be even more difficult to find. Plus keep in mind that even determinate varieties require some sort of staking or support. Honestly you may be better off just buying local transplants rather than trying to find an inexpensive source for something so very specific and limited.

Someone on GW posted about Hazzards. Although their focus is wholesale, they do sell retail as well. I just placed an order with them. I definitely won't need all the seeds, but I couldn't beat their prices. I'm grateful to have found the company. Thanks, GW posters!

Any varieties in particular? I'm happy with the seeds from Victory Seed. Seedlings look fantastic one month in. The shortest seedlings are Uralskiy Ranniy, Extreme Bush and Tiny Tim. Siberia seems a bit larger. All of thses are determinate and TT is a dwarf.

No experience with these guys but tomatofest.com has like 12 pages of cooler climate varieties, most of which are early. Maybe someone has experience with this company?

I have used Tomatofest and they have been a good place for me to pick up $2 packs of sale seeds 35-40 per pack resonable shipping but min $15 order

Heirloom acres seeds has a more limited selection but if you know what you are looking gor they have some good pricing - a little slow on delivery though
specials 95 cent 1.25 up to $1.75 and pks of 25 or 50 seeds

have used the others except sampleseeds because for $1 you get 15 seeds and I needed more at the time
Victory is $1.95 but only 20 seeds

Bakers Creek $1.75 - $3 and Glecklers are about the same pricewise - about $2.50+ pk

What annoys me the most in ordering any seeds from seed companies as a whole,is the fact that many of them charge a minimum charge for handling and shipping costs-regardless of whether or not you have 1-2-or 3 packets of seed, up to say for example 25 packets of seed, all in-for the same price regardless of quantity,some shipping charges from these companies usually amounts to from $5.00 to $7.00 or more per order, more if it is an International order, when most of us know that if it is only 1-to- 3 packets, it doesn't take five minutes to slip them in an envelope and post them at very minimal costs of less than one dollar if it is within the boundary of the United states main land mass.

Some of the best seed prices are obtained from Europe seed suppliers,the best being Germany and Holland, where seed usually costs only around one Euro per packet-which at the current rate of exchange is just over a dollar-regardless of variety, The Italians probably do the largest quantity of seed per packet- up to a massive 500 seeds per packet or more in some cases, that's a lot of tomato seeds to keep you going with for a few years, and they are also very cheap too-roughly from one to two Euros per packet.all very good quality seed.

But probably the best source is through mutual seed exchange on the various tomato forums with other tomato enthusiasts, for the price of a stamped addressed envelope within the USA one can obtain an awesome amount of very good material with very minimal costs involved- and as Trudi-says,her particular organisation, has got a very fine selection of what must now be approaching 150 varieties or more of just tomatoes,along with a whole host of other veggies as well, and I can assure you from personal experience that the seeds are very fine quality seeds, generous amounts- delivered in full information packets, and usually very quick response times-regarding postal turn around speed, well worthy of mention anywhere.

I would also recommend The Sample Seed Shop. I've ordered from Remy a couple of times and am very happy with the seeds and service.

Some places do charge quite a bit for shipping, too much for small orders in my opinion.

I agree with many points you made, but it does take more than 5 minutes to do an international order. You have to fill out a special 3 part slip and take to a post office to be stamped and mailed. So depending on driving distance and then waiting in line, it is not conducive to some companies to offer it. Also, when going overseas, the weight dramatically increases the cost for shipping. So say 10 packets of tomato seeds only costs oh $1.50. If you add in a couple packets of beans though it is suddenly $3.50 to ship. So companies charge more to cover when people order heavy items too.
