looking for dragonfruits and named pineapple varieties

It's been a little more than awhile since I've been here. Anyway just recently bought my first house with a twenty thousand square foot lot and looking forward to getting back to planting things. I'm currently looking to add to my pineapple and dragonfruit collection.

I'm looking for a yellow skinned/white flesh Selenicereus sp, Physical Graffiti dragonfruit, or named pineapple varieties.

I have for trade the following dragonfruit varieties: Giant Vietnamese(self fertile, white flesh, giant stems, very productive), unknown red flesh Thai variety(self fertile, red flesh), unknown Selenicereus sp.(this variety produces orange skinned fruit with a pink flesh), Delight (not self fertile, pink flesh), and American Beauty(self fertile, red flesh). Eggo?? Eggo? Who is this guy?! I seem to recall an Eggo, but that guy dropped off the face of the earth! Seriously though...it's great to have you back man. And congrats on your home purchase.

Did you drag all of your plants from your folks' home to your new one yet? Dig up and replant? I remember that you had quite the collection of cool plants going there. I hope all did well. Which ones do you have left?

Hey Scott, instead of a 4X4 I'd recommend 4" or fatter PVC filled with concrete with holes drilled at the top with 4' rebar criss crossing to make an X at the top. Then put a piece of fence up there to support them. Termites broke one of my 4X4's. I rigged it to last until after the fruit ripen. This winter I'm going to redo them into the more permanent method. Eggo, yes, seems like dragonfruit vine plant actually suck moisture and nutrients, I have seen dead (completely) orange fruit trees and semi-dead Spondias purpurea fruit tree in which dragon fruit were growing (huge plant). At first I tought those orange and ciruela fruit trees were damaged by some kind of plague, but now seems very feasible that dragonfruit was the killer!!!!!!!.

No problem. Those plants look very nice. Did you plant them out already? I made the mistake and waited two weeks before I planted out my last set and there was some rot. They all have survived thus far but I think they would have established faster not for the rot. Also, be careful when removing them from the test tubes. The first time I pulled on one and the leave popped off. Now I stick something down the tube to break up the agar before I pull on the plant. I think I might try tissue culturing myself one day. They sell tissue culture kits available online. Anyone in the forum ever try to micropropagate plants?

I tried growing them in our sand dune 6 years ago but they didn't do too well. I got 2 plants in large pots about 5 years ago. I believe they were sugarloaf and they were over wintered plants that were being cleared. I left the 2 Sugarloaf in pots, divided and re-potted them until I had a dozen over grown 10gal. pots. This spring I divided them and tossed about half. I currently have 7 pots with 8 fruits. For this variety, and maybe others - a stalk will produce 1 fruit. It also can produce side shoots. Up to 3. The usual recommendation is to remove all but 1 of the side shoots, let it fruit the next year, then pull the plant. This works well for the commercial growers because the plant increases in size, but produces the same amount of fruit. Not economical for them. For us, when the pot gets crowded and the fruit size suffers, we can just divy them up into more pots and go on enjoying even more fruits. The plants are also send up new shoots from the base. I think most of my expansion is from base growth. Plants from culture or tops take longer to fruit, usually 2 years. A divided plant will fruit the first year since it starts out with a decent root system. I would buy the largest plant I could find if I was to start over. Store fruit tops are too iffy and slow. Pineapples seem to be mostly pest free. Vermin eating the fruit happens, but bugs don't like them.They are thrifty with water, and tolerate neglect and being root bound. As for flavor, I harvest my fruits when they are yellow and fragrant. They are sweet and heavenly. I will never buy a store pineapple again.

hahah, i didn't think anyone would notice me gone. I won't be digging up much of anything but for some bananas. Whatever was at my parent's will be left there. Just gonna plant new stuff, lots of space to play with so it'll be fun. Thanks guys. No new stuff Jay, I've been on a hiatus for some time. Ethan, I sent you an email.

Hi Eggo:

I would be happy to trade with you. I have Physical Graffiti and the yellow dragon fruit. Altough the one (yellow) I have fruited is very small fruited. I have others that I have not fruited yet, that I am hoping are larger. If Ethan doesn't have these, let me know.

Well...it's good to have you back in the fold! I'm sure we can keep you busy helping you order new plants. How are all of your cherimoyas doing?

hahah, I'm gonna be keeping myself in control. I think I will be starting out with citrus and mango varieties for now. The cherimoyas are doing great here. Grows like a weed, I have cut down 2 mature ones in the last couple of years...just was running out of space. But I still got 4 mature ones in full production. I can say, I'm a bit over cherimoya.... they are incredible mind you but I've been cutting out a lot of sugar out of my diet and well cherimoyas are very sweet. I don't eat as much of them as I use to.

Dear dear Richard...you can always send extra to Ohio!! We consider luscious fruit to be a "different" class of sugars!
