i think Puglvr was hitting in 36-38 and had alot of bloom damage. i am sure she will pop on...

I am pretty sure she got quite a bit colder than that. I thought it was in the 20's, but I could be wrong.

You're right, unfortunately...I hit 27°-28° for several hours(7-8) which caused all the severe damages to my Mango trees. Blooms can be damaged at a lot warmer than that though, As to your question on the blooms...I attached a link below, check out "the climate"...I protected my mango blooms(when I had them) when the forecast is going to be 40° or below. I would always err on the side of caution if given a chance. For me, one or two degrees could make a difference between survival and damage. Hard freezes, well that's a whole other story...hope that's over it for us this year?

i just re-read the post from pug and it was predicted to be in the 30's but i guess got much lower...wow...what a bummer about being under 30 degrees...

i did read on the thread about who got freeze damage that one lady had a low of 34.5 and her mango blossoms were fine..

My mango blossoms are fine but I protected the tree. It got down to 24 degrees during both of the hard freezes.

Glad to see you here!! You're definitely one of the lucky ones!!

The weather is calling for 33 later in the week so i just dragged them all back in the greenhouse today to get it over with. They seem heavier every time.

During the same cold snap that Puglvr experienced, I had several mangos with flowers that were covered with frost cloth and their flowers survived just fine (on my Edward, Southern Blush, and Fairchild tree). This was with a 6+ hour hard freeze (low of 27.9, with two freezes in 2 1/2 weeks). My other mango trees (with flowers) lost some tender limbs that were new growth last year and all lost their flowers. Other mango trees I have that had tender growth (from last year) that also showed no signs of damage were my Mallika and my Nam Doc Mai. I think it was the location in my yard vs. the type of mango tree that made the difference. On the next street over from mine is a 30' Glenn mango and a 25' Glenn seedling tree. Both lost the outer 15-20% of their canopies...probably not the worst thing in the world; it probably keeps the trees "pruned."

Great news bluepalm!! Glad to hear your Mango trees sustained very little damage...you should have some delicious mangos this summer. I'm jealous, LOL...but I'm very happy for you!!

Here's a couple of Mango trees that I took three days after the Jan. freeze in my neighborhood...about two miles from my house. These trees are appx. 3 and 5 years old. Didn't take the 27° too well here either **sigh**. I agree with bluepalm 100%, its location, location...and protection...BTW, all these trees were all covered with blooms prior to the "freeze". Believe it or not the trees look even worse today. I will be curious to see how these guys do in the next few months...

The cold did nothing to my trees but many of the small mangos/stalks did get damaged. The leaves look fine however. I lost so many mangoes and wanted to cry!!! I was so pissed. The mangos that did get fertilized are still there and growing.

I got news for you guys!!!!! ALL THE STALKS that got damaged by the cold and wind that lost all the little mangoes or flowers.... 3 more buds are starting to FORM!!!!! In other works, don't worry!!! More flower buds will form to replace the damaged stalks. I could not believe it it!!! I was like, OMG!!!!! So for all the stalks I lost, I will now have 3 more stalks forming and the cold feather is almost behind us. Check your stalks guys, you will see the new buds forming.

Dri Scifi, Congrats that's great news... Hope you get mangoes this summer...you are in a much warmer climate that me, Miami right? You should have no problems...you will get mangoes, it just might take a little while for you "younger" trees to mature, but soon enough!

Wow, I am so sorry to see that. Yes, I am in Miami. Hopefully your trees will recover since spring is right around the corner. What part of Florida are you in? Didn't know other parts can actually get that cold.

That large lychee is amazing. It looks like it is is still in decent shape aside from the top layer of leaves. That smaller one looks pretty rough though. At least you know your protecting them saved your lychees from looking like that smaller one. Are you seeing any new growth flushes starting on your lychees yet? Maybe you will get lucky and they will re-bloom? Is that possible on lychess?

Jsvand, No new growths yet on the lychee trees, but its only been almost a month... since the Jan.23 Freeze. That was the one that caused all the damages in my trees. I'm sure the Feb freeze didn't help it, but I didn't see anymore damage from it.

I am sure that huge Lychee will survive, Most of the damage looks like the outer leaves. They can definitely take it colder than a Mango, and that Lychee seems like its pretty established...it was sad though, I saw that tree loaded with flowers, just a week or so before the freeze...

I called Lychees on line, and was told that Lychees normally only bloom once a year...so chances are it won't rebloom? But you never know?

Maybe you will get lucky... Rebloom is not that its blooming more than once, it is simply completing the blooming process since the blooms died. Only the stalks that died started reblooming on my mango tree. For every 1 stalk that died, I know have three or more....Oh well, good luck!

I won't get too see anymore process as I have to go out of town on business. I won't get to see my babies for a week!!! The little mangoes should be bigger when I get back God willing and the new blooms should be flush red!!! The best thing about it, I have a bee hive behind my shed so they keep busy on my trees ;-)

Yeah, it was pretty bad here, from what I've read and heard from some of the old timers here, the last time it got this cold here was about 20 years ago? I just hope it will be another 20 yrs before I see it again, LOL...

Of course, 20 years ago it was actually WAY colder. 20 degrees in Melbourne, that was an incredible freeze, Christmas day no less. That would kill most tropicals, roots and all. I hope that never happens again.

Looks like I may have made it through the winter. Yesterday hit 34 degrees, but I think that may be it for the really cold weather in my area. The ten day forcast looks great so hopefully I am done covering things for the year. My goal is to get a real greenhouse for next winter so I won't have to deal with the portable one anymore.
