Stuck at Johnson Space Center on a Friday afternoon, while someone with a gun takes someone else hostage!

Just to clarify: no, I am not a hostage or the hostage-taker. But I've been feeling like a hostage for awhile.

Late update: They're letting us go now, leave the center, I mean...

Guy must've used a pair of faulty adult diapers...

well as far as ive heard its a result of faulty wiring and gas? which is really wierd and what not but now for the juicy...charred details XD. every thing in the kitchen was lit up. every thing else was more or less smoke and damaged or atleast thats what i thought. a contractor came today and said that some how there was asbestos from the fire. also they will have to gut the house as a result of water damage... im very scarred because i ahve to ask some one who grow orchids simi comercially to look after my plants. but as far as im concerned this guy really ait all that great. plus he only handles warm growers which sucks for me cause ive been working on getting cool and intermediates to bloom. any who they said between 3-4 months but mom said it might take up to six which is really bad. the up side is that they are going to bring in a specialty cleaning crew to remove all the crap and what ever else got into the house and its furniture... plus were getting an entirely new cooling system which makes me happy =D and maybe some new counter tops lol XD any ways Gaston

That is a really funny story, northspruce! I've had the same kind of luck with any daylilies that I buy from local greenhouses or big box stores. I have all these NOID's, and I don't have room for both them, and the ones I wanted in the first place!! And to make it all worse, I can't bear to just toss a perfectly healthy plant, even if I don't really care for it's bloom! Gah. I try to give them away if it'll make someone else happy. I guess that is one justification for spending the extra money to mail order: you will be guaranteed you get the right plant - if you don't, they'll have to send you the right one!

Well Erin : If they are answering to every question like yours they will end up in jail. What you need to know is that all fig trees come from middle east area,between Black sea and Caspian sea.There are not American Native Edible fig. Yet the Governement want to control the importation of new plants for purpose of taxes and fees colected. So if taxes are not paid Punishment is very havy,Disproportionatelly Havy.There is a lot of debate about it because people are not smugling fig plants in us ,but merelly ,bring in,wood samples,wich is not prohibited.Regards

This hollowness may be a condition which could be from the strain of cukes grown. Because most cukes tend to need a lot more water to grow, in order for them to become long. Also, there are a few types that farmers prefer to grow that are long keepers, which, in turn, could have less water content. The hollow cukes I have seen are usually ones that the seeds are seperated in triangular rows inside. This same condition sometimes shows up in overripe watermelons too. Keep in mind that if your making pickled cucumbers, and even though they may be fresh, the person who grows them may be choosing a strain that gives better yields, but need less care and watering. Simply an economic issue, at the expense of those who pickle cukes at home. When I grow them, I usually choose varieties like the Heinz, or county fair types, which are of a strains that are firm and solid. Another issue with cukes is bitterness, and the ones I have grown have also had a few bitter ones. I've read a lot about this and it seems to affect almost all varieties when the plants are in the earlier production. Hybrids are Ok for somthing things, but you need to find out what is the actual type your farmer or supplier is growing. There is nothing more disappointing then biting into a pickled bitter cuke. Sometimes it tends to make the whole jar unpleasent tasting. I was almost tempted to taste a small amount of each cuke before its put in a jar, but if you have a bushel or more to work on, that would be a bit much. Even for that, if you do find a bitter tasting one, your taste buds are not going to be able to easily detect a sweet one afterwards. My grandmother used to cut off an end and rub the two cut pieces together and see if there was a clear color liquid, or a whitish slime. If they showed the white slime, she didn't use that one. Not sure if this was really a way to tell though.

I'm so sorry, I don't know Laurel or have any more news. (I really like that name, Laurel - planted an oak tree in our yard of that variety - name of a family friend.) I hope she's OK, and await whatever anyone can know next of her.

I was never in any danger, being in a different building a good distance away. We were not told to evacuate, just to lock our doors to the hallway. I and the other people who I was locked-up with conferred briefly and brainstormed about what things were lying around in our room to use, if the bad guy busted in our door. We chuckled a little, thinking of all the everyday office things that could make some pretty nasty weapons: the pyrex coffeepot with a cup or so of hot coffee still in it; the manual hole-puncher, and so on. The youngest guy who was with us seemed the most upset. I think it was mainly because he did not know what was the status or location of his girlfriend. (She doesn't work anywhere near Bldg 44.) Anyway, he actually picked up and held a pair of scissors and paced in the office for a few minutes. For a brief moment, I was concerned about being in danger from him moreso than from the man who had the gun.

I'm just not able to sleep yet. Kinda rare for me, for a Friday night. What a horrible ending at JSC! But like Rick said, it could have been worse. I'm feeling disappointment with myself for posting such a stupid thing earlier when I started this thread. I mean, writing some little mock gallows humor brain-fart about diapers. The next time I go out to JSC, I suspect it will involve a lot more than just flashing a badge to get through the gate. Probably a long car search, at least...

Oh, I did see a news report where the guy shot and killed a hostage and himself. That is so sad and stressful for all the people who work there. I know NASA in Houston is a huge place with all the buildings all spread out, but even so, it must have been scary for you. I am glad you and your co-workers are all right.

Gallows humor is totally normal. If a person isn't there or isn't familiar with trauma on a personal basis they may not understand. It's just one way to cope. I really am glad you're here to make the gallows humor jokes! Seeing that guy freak out and pick up scissors would've made me nervous too BTW. People can act really wierd when they're freaked. PJ
