Thank you very much for your reports and suggestions. I took a chance and put out 4 flats the second night, but still kept the covers on. Perennial foxglove, false sunflower (Helianthus helanthoides), Rose of Sharon, and Convolvulus (figured I'd throw in an annual for good measure). All had sprouted over two weeks prior, and the flats were quite full and lush. Temps in my area were in the high 20's by 5AM. All four flats lost between 50% and 75% of the seedlings, which started out green and shriveled the next morning and are now quite brown and dead. Lessons learned: Know your own microclimate. I am less than a mile from the beach, which may have played a part in how cold it was in my own back yard. Know your container type. The soil in my flats is not as deep as that in a milk jug, and so may not have been sufficient protection for tender roots that most likely froze solid for a while. I'm glad I did multiple flats of each!

Three things I learned to do first...because I ended up doing the beds over and over until I got it thru my thick skull "first things first"!!! If you do not define your beds and plant the 'bones' you won't ever get quite that...that....'look' you want. And by 'the look' I mean those beds that make your mouth drool with ENVY color="green"> First, mow grass short and then take a long garden hose or extension cord and lay it where you want your beds to be. Create curves and sweeping edges. Look at this bed from all sides and from prime viewing spots such as your patio. You like? Good! Now, spray paint along the hose or cord with black paint (doesnt have to be neon--just need to be able to see it. Try not to paint said hose/cord--lol) Ok, now remove the hose/cord and get an edger or weed-whacker and hit that painted line hard and wide so that you can really see it. Check for smooth curves, nothing harsh or too sharp--remember that you will have to mow along this line. Now, everything between those beautiful lines and the fence is PRIME FLOWER COUNTRY! Second, prepare beds. I use cardboard and lots of mulch. Follow advice as above. Third, but no less important....get some backbone lady!! ;o) You really need evergreen things. Especially in zone 6 where winter is a time for dreaming and flat empty beds are depressing. The green of your evergreens creates a nice foil for spring flowers and bulbs, since most grass will still be dormant. It also adds height and density to the bed. Its the matte of your picture...the frame for your flowers and roses. I had so many beds that lacked something...A neighbor pointed out that my yard was totally bare in winter and had no density in summer. I added bones and immediately got what was missing. I wish she had spoken sooner since some evergreens may take a while to reach a good height/size. Now, all 'bones' don't need to be evergreen, but IMHO no bed should be without a few evergreens--tall, medium or short. There are so many varieties to choose from. I have found that what makes some beds look scrumptious and some look just 'pretty good' is the texture one creates in a bed. This is done with a mix of things but each bed needs the density of evergreens with the various foliages of other plants. I have a friend who had no flowres in her beds (horrors!) Yet, I couldnt take my eyes off of her beds--the texture was incredible!! The foil she created was captivating to me (and I am a thru-and-thru flower and rose ho!!) I hope these comments have helped you--lord knows they would have saved me a fortune if I had known this from the start! But I did rake up the leaves on her property next to mine where we share a mutual irrigation ditch plus all the wonderful rotting maple leaves in the ditch. I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! I still don't have him "dumpster diving" at the restaurants he takes care of for greens or coffee grounds etc. He says it is very messy! (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
