2011 Tomato Photos (Part 2)

Time for more pics, this thread should be plenty full at 30-40 posts in case I don't get around to part 3 in time.

For those who don't know how to post a photo -

First, upload your picture to a sever such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc (I sometimes use URLs to my Facebook photos). Copy the URL to your image (should start with http://). The URL should end in ".jpg" or another similar image extension - do not copy the URL from your address bar. That will just copy the link of the web page that contains your image. Right-click on the image to get the address of the image. Then post this code in the body of your reply message:

<img src="http://www.example.com/myimage.jpg">;

Of course, you replace my example.com address with the URL of the image.

Mine are growing like weeds with this Miracle Gro potting mix. 66 tomatoes total.

Here in California its been raining like crazy. I have some tomatoes plants in totes and some in the ground.

I started most of my seeds Jan. 4. I transplanted this year on 2/24, two weeks earlier than last year. It's been pretty mild with only one light frost and a lot of 80's/60's days the last week or so. My first fruit is on my first container plant, which I thought was a Bloody Butcher, but since Bloody Butcher is a potato leaf variety, this is a mystery plant. The seeds were given to me so I won't complain and the plant is setting fruit nicely too. Most of my in-ground plants are putting out their first blooms. I'm growing 30 plants(many colors and sizes) this year, 6 of which are at a church garden. I live in the DFW area. Happy growing, Pete

Rosarama, im in no way taking credit for this growing medium, I learned about it on this forum. Its strickly for containers for what I know about it. The man that came up with it to my knowledge is Al Tapla. 5 parts pine bark, ground up cut up or whatever is done to it till its the average size of a dime. 1 part coarse perlite 1 part peat 2 cups dolimite, 1 cup of pro max minors, 2 cups of slow release fertilizer I mix every thing in a 36 gal container, a little at a time. I believe its the best thing since sliced bread. Look up and study Als mix. If your serious about growing maters in containers you should learn about Als mix, it would save you a lot of heart ache, and make you much more successful in growing in containers. My Tumbling Toms went nuts in just a week or so, despite the cool cloudy weather. This variety is probably a keeper! In fact, I took two cuttings to make another hanging basket. Hope the taste is good! Forget about flowers in a hanging basket, lol...grow tomatoes! Will post photos soon of the cuttings, and my other 10 tomato varieties. Gosh that's alot...I cannot believe I ended up with so many, especially in a condo, LOL! May 18 May 26

I'd like to add a picture of my tomatoes too... I have 12 tomatoes in the ground: opalka, yellow pear, chocolate cherry, sweet 100, cherokee chocolate, kbx, cowlick's brandywine, big zac, box car willie, dr wyche's yellow, omar's lebanese and nar. as you can see, i've placed them in cages... do i still have to provide stakes for them or is the cage enough as a support? if i do have to provide a stake, which variety should i stake, or do i have to stake all of them? it'd be nice to know this early so i could provide the necessary stake support before they become bigger. also, which ones usually goes higher than 5'? i know yellow pear, chocolate cherry and sweet 100 does... how about the others? i only have a 5' cage, do i have to top them off when the time comes? thanks for any advice you can give, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Part 2, I have to toss a pic out there. ;-) These are my cherry tomato seedlings. Placero, Chadwick Cherry & Sungold Select II below. My experiments have left me with half healthy paste & slicing tomatoes, so may have to start those over. :( At least I learned to frickin not use floating pellet trays ever again! lol...

I don't have pictures of seedlings but I do have some pictures of the tomatoes we planted out on March 20th. They are inside my big high tunnel, inside a low tunnel with two layers of row cover and then the two rows are covered with an old piece of 6 mil greenhouse plastic. I have added 2 liter bottles of water to capture heat. Despite the outside temperatures being in the high 20's, under all the cover, it has stayed 45-50 plus degrees at night. During the day, if the sun would shine, it will warm up nicely.

I just started mine a week and a half ago never posted a picture on here so this is a test...Ya it worked

I put mine under lights 8 hours and rotate 3 trays and the other time they are by a window also I just turned on the fan today never tried that before.

I've got them going in my garage right now where it's 55-60 since the weather turned cold here in charleston. I think you can see all my labels. I have 2 cukes and a Bhut pepper in there too. I also have an oscillating fan on them 24/7 in order to get them used to flowing air.

I finally had a chance to take some more pictures of my grow shelves. There are four shelves, each hold 8 1020 trays for a total of 32 trays.

If I am seeding 50's or 72's plug trays, I can get a lot of seedlings in a small area, over 2,000! It is usually closer to 1,000 since I don't always seed directly into 72's.

wow, I am jealous of all those tomatoes! I hope I get some this year. Maybe my worm poop will help? Last year by the time my tomatoes got going the summer was over and I only got a few good ones.

I am hoping this year is different.

Day 20. Still a stragler or 2 sprouting but most are 2+" with some having their 6th set of true leaves and the cotelydons are starting to brown. I also have 66 tomatoes all together.

oh wow, some of you are growing so many!!! I wish I had that much room! :D

I am going to post some pics..but just the tomatoes themselves... my plants have been leafmined like crazy and the foliage looks so very ugly to take a picture of the full plant... :(

All your tomatos look great, finally got around to picking up shop lights to get grow table going, unfortanatly to late to get tomatos growing. But i will get other things planted inside becuase the darn squirrls and prarie dogs or simular type animals ate most of the seed I planted last year, so figured id get them started indoors 1st. tom8olvr, do you think its to early to put tomato plants into garden right now? I was thinking good tomato cages with plastic wrapped around lower half. What do you all think. Thanks Mark

These are my first ever tomatoes from seed and I feel like a proud Papa. I have 24 plants; Early Girl, Pruden's Purple, Stump of the World, Rendaldo, Sabre and Purple Russian. Seeds sown March 11th, so a month old. I wont be able to plant them out for at least another month, so hopefully they will continue to be happy under the lights.

Well I noticed my first flower buds today. That leaf damage was caused last week when it dropped down to 33F and they were left out (I wasn't home).. didn't do them any good at all.

Coming along nicely, all! =) Mine are starting to take off & get wee lil bud sets. Yay!!!

These are some of my cherry tomatoes. I have more cherry tomatoes & some slightly wee seedlings of Amish Paste, San Marzano Lungo #2 & Rutgers that I had to reseed about 2 weeks ago due to them getting destroyed when I moved...

I am still really jealous of all of your photos!!
I wintersowed most of my tomatoes. I have also just sowed 2 types under lights. big sun gold select
and alpine. I usually don't do well with indoor sowing but I am trying!!

My Sungold Select II, Chadwick & Chocolate Cherry mater seedlings. Starting to take off, grow buds, etc.. This weather needs to get warm & stay that way so they can go outside. Definitely ready for it! =)
