Need SE Florida advice please

Hi, does anyone on this forum living in Southeast Florida grow peaches? I saw that Pine Island Nursery has a few cultivars for sale that are supposed to work even down here (I live between Boca Raton and Ft. Lauderdale).

We are re-landscaping an area on the south-east corner of our house and I have room for a small fruit tree now - but only if I espalier it. Having done some research it seems that carambolas and peaches are really the only fruit trees that lend themselves to being espaliered down here... I'm leaning towards a peach but would appreciate any insights/advice.

Whow, how cool is that??? Thanks for sharing! I have never seen an espaliered Mango tree, or sapote... sure openes up more possibilities, doesn't it? Thanks so much for sharing this link!

Sumognat You are on the right path. I live in Delray Beach. The thrips here are 11 months a year. I have discovered the hard way that if you spray chemicals for disease you will have major thrip problems. It kills the beneficial insects that eat the thrips. On the other hand if you don't spray for disease the roses are a diseased mess. So it's a pick your problems situation. I have discovered that if you go with old roses that are disease resistant you can have beautiful roses without disease or without insect damage, atleast it is mimimal. I would highly recommend the china rose, Vincent Godsiff. It stays small and blooms it's head off 12 months a year. My Don Juans, grafted on fortuniana are about the only modern roses that haven't bit the dust with disease. Best of luck.

Being as there is no glass in the front door, the ground floor window seems to take on more importance than average. It suggests a residential friendliness, helps create a sense of being welcomed to anyone approaching and adds some architectural interest. You might not want it covered up with foliage -- either pygmy palm or new plants. Bushy plants might go more to the outside with lower plants below the window. Really killing the overall appeal is the the skinny walk. It needs to be doubled in width. Would be much nicer if redone in a more decorative way.

Thanks Peren.all and tsugajunkie - believe it or not, I have always top dressed my entire garden with compost and all my shredded oak leaves every fall - my soil is like black gold. Each Spring I give everything a small amount of Epsoma fertilizer. Don't know what else I can possibly do. Everything thrives except these plants - I am so puzzled.

I'm so awful at rose ID. LOL! Lilyfinch - I think you might have it. I passed over it before because the pictures I saw were so much lighter and I've never seen it in person. HMF has some darker blooms too. It's also pretty much thornless. Sean - I don't think it's a climber. it looks a lot like some of those pictures but it has more petals and is more globular.

Hey, I live in Lake Worth and grow both a peach tree and carambola. They are growing excellent. I purchase my plants at Excalibur Nursery off of Lantana road west off Jog. I also grow Jujube which I think can be espaliered.

Seems like a sugar apple or atemoya would work for that.

mikesid - Thank you! That's good to know. I'm leaning towards peach just because I think I know more what to do with them in the kitchen. Thank you also for the tip about the nursery, I will definitely check them out.

dghays - yes I've been toying with the idea of an atemoya too... the sad truth is that I am rapidly running out of room in my small yard. I've already got 2 mangos and one each of lychee, lemon,tangelo, tangor and orange. Unless I start filling in our neighborhood's communal lake for more ackerage I think I can only squeeze in one more, unless they are small enough to live permanently in a pot on my deck.
