Growing Tomatoes

To start inside or stick outside...

2 questions. First, a list of what I have "planned"; I know I'll end up with more than just these, because that's usually how it goes.

Okay, now, first question. For those of you who winter sow; are there certain kinds of toms that do better winter sown or are they pretty much the same? I just realized that I don't have room for these plants inside and my tiny grow light won't reach all of them.

Question #2: will any of these grow well in a half whiskey barrel? I know cherry toms will work, but what about the others? Can you tell I'm trying to save space? Haha.

FWIW, cherry tomatoes do not necessarily grow well in a half whiskey barrel if you're thinking the plants are smaller than those of big tomatoes. Cherry tomato plants can grow to 16 feet tall, depending on the variety! Any smaller tomato plant can certainly be planted in a half whiskey barrel and do well though, determinates and indeterminates that grow to only 3-7 feet. Some kind of support for the taller plants if needed.

As for winter sowing, the people who hang out at that forum probably have the answers you're looking for. They're nothing if not enthusiastic and helpful! And they have experience in winter-sowing all kinds of seeds. Winter sowing may be the answer for you if you don't have the inside room to start the plants.

I have a few determinates and bush toms that I could plant in whiskey barrels. I thought about planting my Silvery Fir Tree's in the front yard because I heard some use them for edible landscaping. I guess they might do okay in the barrels.

That depends on the seed. I start tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, and eggplant indoors right now. As for the starting lettuce and such outside with a dome, that's the basic idea behind Winter Sowing. Please see the Winter Sowing forum and read the FAQ. They detail a very easy and cheap way of getting quality seedlings outdoors in flats with little fuss and NO HARDENING OFF. You can even get tomato plants that way. Hope that helps! highalttransplant, I thought about doing that, but since many of my tom seeds came from trades (and there's NO info on most of them... rare seeds apparently) I have no way of knowing the DTM. I can safely assume that most IND beefsteaks have higher DTM so I'll keep those babies inside with me. How readily do tom seeds rot when they've been winter sown? I'm a little concerned because of our weather as of late. It will get warm for a few days then a hard frost hits for multiple night in a row. And what about other veggie seeds? What is safe to wintersow without a high likelihood of losing the seed to rot? Thanks! Abby

Start seedlings inside or in outside shed

minal, An unheated shed in Buffalo would be too cold for seedlings. My setup is located in my unheated basement which contains no natural light. Room temperature stay around 50-55 degrees and soil temperatures directly under the light fixtures are around 70 degrees. Try to keep the lights 1-2" inches from the tops of the seedlings. Denise, sorry, I have been so tired of being sick. My brain is brain dead and I can only keep up here and there. Dam 'pregnizone' can wreak havoc on even a young body. Me too. My weather does the same exact thing. When it clouds up it usually rains and is lousy out, but warm. Once the storms pass, then comes the arctic air, the only time I ever get blue skies this time of the year. It's pretty depressing. It has been frigid for day, but not a cloud in the sky. I don't know which is better, cloud warm days and no sun, or blue skies and sun? You are so right! When the west is warm, the east freezes to death! I can't wait to catch a break around here. What a pain it is to unhook the hose and drain all the water out and then hook it back up again to water all the plants in my greenhouse. Kvetch, I see you dug them up!! I am so glad you did that. Ha. I was hoping you would not just let them die of hypothermia..lool Good to see you my friend. Mike

Well I'm trying my hand at winter sowing thanks to Trudi!!! And certainly feel that any tomato you have is a candidate for WS. So what you can't grow indoors grow by WS outdoors.
