Help me decide; start inside or put outside

Okay, now, first question. For those of you who winter sow; are there certain kinds of toms that do better winter sown or are they pretty much the same? I just realized that I don't have room for these plants inside plus my tiny grow light won't reach all of them.

Hi Abby! Glad you stopped by : )

I'm a zone cooler than you, and this is only my second year to grow tomatoes from seed, but last year I did both, WS some, indoor sowed the rest. What I used to determine which ones to start indoors was the DTM. If the DTM was 85 days or more I sowed them indoors, if it was less I WS them.

I thought about doing that, but since many of my tom seeds came from trades (and there's NO info on most of them... rare seeds apparently) I have no way of knowing the DTM. I can safely assume that most IND beefsteaks have higher DTM so I'll keep those babies inside with me.
How readily do tom seeds rot when they've been winter sown? I'm a little concerned because of our weather as of late. It will get warm for a few days then a hard frost hits for multiple night in a row.
And what about other veggie seeds? What is safe to wintersow without a high likelihood of losing the seed to rot?

I made a start, I'll take pics tomorrow...I had my husband chainsaw through those prickly things..3 of them are GONE!! YAHOO!! Next weekend I'll shoot for taking the three by the garage out and probably putting in either otto luyken laurel or densiforma yew if I can make sure there's enough drainage....luckly I don't have the thick red clay...this house was built on pasture that is nice light brown and very good soil...I'll add in some organic material... I replaced those thorny things with Sweet Box...it'll fill in the space and in spring have a wonderfully fragrant smell right by the front steps...in front of those I planted a few dark liriope...placed a fall display of Cinderella pumpkins and on the side where the other thorny thing was I planted a striped maiden grass that won't grow too large but will add enough contrast so as not to over whelm the corner of the foundation. Years down the road I plan to take out half the hollies and completely rescape everything..but for now-trimming what I have and sprucing it up a bit did wonders....I'm going to be adding the bulbs in a bed alongside the back of my house where there is much more sun... Abby FWIW, cherry tomatoes do not necessarily grow well in a half whiskey barrel if you're thinking the plants are smaller than those of big tomatoes. Cherry tomato plants can grow to 16 feet tall, depending on the variety! Any smaller tomato plant can certainly be planted in a half whiskey barrel and do well though, determinates and indeterminates that grow to only 3-7 feet. Some kind of support for the taller plants if needed. As for winter sowing, the people who hang out at that forum probably have the answers you're looking for. They're nothing if not enthusiastic and helpful! And they have experience in winter-sowing all kinds of seeds. As long as all the colors work together nicely, you can start and stop anywhere that feels right to you...typically though you want to break colors at inside corners. Unless you are really good, outside corners can be tricky to paint. I would paint the wall with the stairs the beige and do the rest of the family room in the blue. I would not paint the bottom of the soffit dark...I think it should match the ceiling. One way to think about it is, am I in the room. If you are in the room then the color can be the same. If you are not in the room, the color can be different. So the brown wall on the kitchen side is in the kitchen. The wall in the pass through is in the family room so should be blue. The stairwell is the stairwell so should be beige. But you are inspiring me to create a thread on color blocking...there seems to be a lot of questions around how to do it....

oldbat-Thank you for your reply and I agree that it can be some nice eye candy in the fridge. My everyday dishes will go in the 2 lower drawers on the left side of the cooktop. I generally unload onto the counter on top or behind dishwasher, then will open drawers and place inside. The seldom used dishes will go in drawers on the other side of the island than the dishwashers. Homechef--you are basically seeing the area...to the left of kitchen is a great room flanked by built ins and TV on either side of fireplace. The area to the left of the dining room is the entry. Then, it's private areas after that. I do love the idea of a bar type area and Mamagoose's idea has sparked how to do that. I think I will place the wine cooler to the right of the fridge and create a "bar" type beverage area above that with glassware, liquor, etc, as well as the coffee maker and vitamix, that can be relocated to pantry when we are entertaining. Abby, if you at least have a name, you can do a Google or Yahoo search to find out more info on them. Definitely the cherry or grape type tomatoes will ripen earlier.

As far as what other veggie seeds are safe to WS now, lettuce, spinach, chard, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, radishes, carrots, and parsnips should all be fine.

The root veggies you mentioned, should they be direct sown or started in paper pots? Things have a tendency to get trampled if direct sown.

I usually direct sow root veggies, but lots of folks WS them. I think as long as you transplant them early, you'll be fine. The issue with transplanting late is that it can cause the roots to grow crooked. They'd still taste the same : )
