OT: Yard pics 4 those who wanted to see the new yard!

Why don't we have a conversation side? Ok here are the pics of the yard FINALLY that everyone wanted to see.

Hope you like them! I love this yard, I will be so glad when we can get it all finished!

Front of the house partial front yard, the tree brush thing there in the front on the right is gone now, there was another one closer to the house, in front of the window on the right we cut it out already.

This is the backside of the bush we, the deck pieces there belong to the other lady that lived here, she took it today, some she left for me so I can put my flowers in containers on them!

We have a lot of cleaning to do and we have stuff on the porch that needs to go in the barn but it has to be cleaned out first! We have a LOT of cleaning and clearing to do lol.

Looks Great Fran. I wish I had that much space. Even though it will be a lot of work an clearing, it will be the GOOD kind of work, KWIM??? I think it will be wonderful and lots and lots of fun.

Bump and Stella said to tell you "hello". They also wanted me to give you a good scratch, but I think that might be a bit much, don't you? Well, at least they were thinking of you, right?

Well, I took Inkognito's advice and took a walk around the block but it seems that many house have limited landscaping and have either overgrown large shrubs like what we had going, or they have ripped out everything and just have perennials, no shrubs. Luckygal, great idea in hiring kids to do the work. I work at a school and I could hire some of the students to work in my yard. You did find the whipcord pics. What we decided to do is plant a barberry just behind it in a yellow colour to make the whipcords stand out. I am going to fill in with hostas and heuchera to allow for years of change and growth that isn't too permanent. Mjsee, what a gorgeous yard. Sheesh! I wish I had the trees and shade that you have! That is just amazing! I really like your stone features. What an amazing additive to the plants and trees you have. I am impressed. Japanese maples, hostas, heucheras and ferns, oh my! I would be very embarrassed to show any pictures right now. I am not a professional and what we have done in the front yard or have not yet done isn't something I want to show off. LOL We are actually replacing the lawn this year because the weeds have gotten way out of control. There is a garden that I am giving up on and replacing with lawn instead. That being said, perhaps later in the season I will be able to be proud enough of our changes that I will post. The before and after pics would show the work we have done this year. Years to come, it will get better and better. Thanks for sharing your pics and advice everyone. I hope my yard can look half as nice as yours!

I'm sure your neighbors were happy to see veggies, even bolting crops, over the weedy yard, Spaghetina. Here's a couple of suggestions I have from my time growing organically up in SF and Marin. 1) Most of those flowers of the bolted veggies are edible and tasty. While the leaf flavor has turned bitter through the winter and the taste change that comes with bolting, the blossoms often gain a very interesting taste that is great topping salads or lightly fried in certain dishes. 2) If like germinating your own crops from seed, remember which of your crops are heirloom (their seeds will usually produce true) and which are F1 or other hybrids -- it's seed is typically still viable, but may have very different characteristics than the parent. The GW seed exchange forum is a great way to get those exotic seeds you mentioned w/o having to pay catalog prices or drive all over the Bay area, but you need your own seeds to reciprocate. Some of the best plants & veggies in my yard are from trades I've made with other GW members. 3) To my way of thinking, your soil mix seems too heavily focused on decomposed organic matter and doesn't take advantage of the alkaline SF clay topsoil and it's associated soil flora. The compost/purchased soil is great for nitrogen and drainage and you can artificially pump up the P/K/Fe to grow good veggies & plants in it, but organic amendments like blood & bone meal, fish emulsion, seaweed and others need bacteria & fungi to free the nutrients for your crop's roots. That's generally not true for soluble inorganic amendments, which is why they are popular. There's definitely a risk of adding weed seeds by using your yard's topsoil in the garden beds, but that soil food web is necessary for growing good organic crops, IMO. For plants that need lots of N and like great drainage, I go 2/3 purchased soil/fully composted organic matter and 1/3 native topsoil. For tomatoes, peppers and others that suffer in N-rich soils, I use 2/3 native, 1/3 organic matter.

I agree with the warranty. Mine came with a year free and I had to replace the entire duct work and only paid $55, of course I found out today they did a lousy job of it but hopefully the insurance will make them come fix it. I'm glad I renewed it. Its so good to have a place that is yours and to know you can make all the beds you want and never have to dig them up to take or leave them behind again. I think thats why I'm so plant crazy now. I was deprived before, lol. Like Jim said. Make them an offer you might get a heck of a deal with the economy in the crapper like it is. They were about to do some remodeling on my house when I bought it during prime season and I got it 10,000 cheaper as is. There was nothing really wrong with it that I couldn't live with and put in what I want a little at a time like the ugly linoleum in the kitchen but heck, the longer I can put if off the longer the new stuff will be new when I get it done finally, lol.

Botann's point is well taken it does supply good fast shade but in my experience they NEVER get taken down once they get bigger until the storms lay it on your house large branches in your yard and an ugly possibly mishapen tree.Folks always plan to but by the time they get around to it the tree is 40-50 feet tall and not easily removed.The Silver maple in our area can grow 10-15 feet pr. year up and out( mine do) without much problem a tree your size will be probabably 20 ft tall maybe taller and probably 15-20 ft. wide in two more years if your soil is half as good as mine... Remember the larger the tree the more it will cost to have taken out especially one that close to your abode. Of course this is your decision David

I just love it out in the country. After spending the first 20 years of my life in the sticks, and living for 8 in the city...then the last few back in the country.... I don't know how I EVER survived in the city! With neighbors so close, I could smell their supper! LOL!

Also, the house reminds me of my grandmothers. I know exactly how the rain will sound on that tin roof and there's nothing else in the world like it! I'm so happy for you! Congrats!

Oh, I missed a sentence up there LOL, that is the bush/tree with the deck that we cut down. The SO was cutting it while I was taking pics. I had to get them taken before he cut down all the tree/shrubs in pic #2 because I wanted before and after pics.

In pic #10 if you look in the background at the bottom of the hill you can see one of the neighbors houses, this is the one I want to block the view from. I am planning on planting some fast growing trees in a line.

In pic #9 on the right side of the pic is my holding flowerbed we put in too, I am using it as a nursey bed for young plants.

I didn't take a pic of my WS containers LOL.

Dan, tell the kids I said thanks for thinking about me, but I think we will leave the scratching and rubbing to lavish on them! LOL.

Bunny, I am a country girl through and through, I can't stand the thought of living in the city although we did consider it but only for a minute. I like being in the country and NOT seeing my neighbors everytime I go outside. At the other house the trailer park folk would pull up chairs to watch us that I think that is 1. RUDE and 2. CREEPY, WHO does that?

Joan, I am so totally pleased to be here. It is a small country house and it could use some work but I am tickled to finally have a place that I am surrounded by nature and not homes. We even have a nice size front porch to sit out on when we get it cleaned off LOL. It is so peaceful here, with the exception of the little &^*&^* that run up and down the main dirtroad on the trail bikes and 4 wheelers but if I had one I would be too! hehe.

I am just so pleased to be here. A lot of folks wanted to see the place and this thread was the easiest way for me to share.

In the front yard where that little ridge is, we are putting a flowerbed in there too, to make it more level. Can't understand WHY someone would make a cut out section in the front yard but someone did! Crazy is all I can say.

Fran, it's just absolutely wonderful! I don't blame you for holding out for the country. The most wonderful part is that most of the land is already cleared of trees and brush for you. So it's just waiting to become whatever you want to make of it. Don't you just love opportunities?
Sleep tight and dream about what all that land will become. :)

Fran, it looks like you have lots of room to work with. My immediate thought....pumpkins! I'm so jealous of green grass and blue sky and budding trees. We're having a nice day today, but it snowed two days this week ~sigh~

Looks like a great yard to "play in the dirt."
