Hi all,

I just took a few picts of my new tropical yard. The entire yard was just planted about 2 months ago, after the existing dead alder tree and lawn where removed. The Tiki hut was added a month ago!

I still have some more work to do like replacing the concrete path and patio, but for now I am anxiously awaiting winter to see how the bananas, hibiscus, plumeria overwinter and next year to see how the garden turns into my own jungle.

jayferg, I am in Pleasanton...Moved from Tracy last Oct. I got hocked on tropicals out in Tracy, based on a 10' courtyard we had that I grew banana's and cannas in...

When we moved I took about 100 cuttings/divisions to get me started. I have added various plants through plant sales, internet buys, and clearance sales at the local nursery. All of my plants that I had made it through just fine last winter, although I was able to move them under an awning for protection since they were in pots, this year we will see since they are mostly planted in the ground. I am toying with the idea of adding a small green house to over winter some of the more tender plants.

Jon1949: Very nice tropical setting! I especially like the variegated Tapioca. I had not seen that before. I'll have to keep my eye open for it. What are the tropicals in the foreground of the photo labeled "Palapa?" They have red and yellow flowers and appear to be a ginger or heliconia.

I suppose Jon should answer for himself, but to test my knowledge, I'll venture:

yellow flowers are Cassia
red flowers are Canna

Hi Mickey. Tami is right the yellow is candle tree and the red is buckshot canna. I have gotten tapioca from the net and e-bay but the don't travel well. Not to long age i got a vari. tapioca 5 gallon 2' tall plant from Home Depot for $11.99 + tax.I have payed more for shipping on e-bay than that.They did not sell well here in Texas. I guess people here don't know what they are.Thanks john

Cannas include 'Wyoming', 'Red King Humbert' and 'Tropicanna'. Bouvardia ternifolia is blooming at far left. Other frontals include Plectranthus argentatus and Perilla 'Magilla', which Glasshouse Works now claims is actually a Coleus. Stay tuned.
