Volunteer Heliconia

Occasionally a bird will drop a Heliconia seed in the right spot and we get volunteers. Usually it doesn't turn out to be anything good, but we saw this one coming up and knew from the overall appearance that it was going to be a caribaea of some sort. When it first started budding, I thought "Okay, 'Flash'." I've never been too crazy about that one because the colors tend to be kind of washed out, in fact we don't even have that one growing on our property, although our neighbors down the street do. As the inflorescence opened up, though, the colors intensified. This is anything but washed out! There's actually 2 volunteer plants side-by-side, and they both look like this. I don't know who its mommy was, but thank you birdie!
