Mandevilla with white flies

Hello,

I took my mandevilla inside for the winter. It doesn't have to look great, just survive til spring!!! However, it got white flies somehow. I have washed it carefully with soapy water, and I think I killed them all, but I'm getting ready to start vegetables from seed so I really need to know the flies are GONE so they don't infest my baby veggies.

I'm wondering...if I cut it down to the ground, will I kill it? (I won't do it if it can't handle treatment like that!) It's currently in pretty decent condition, not sickly, but this plant is fairly new to me and I don't know what it can handle.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

hi Ann

i cut mine down a couple weeks ago...
the leaves were getting brown,so i knew it was time..
the new sprouts are about 2 feet long already..they
do regrow quick...you should have no problems...
but if it were me...i'd spray after towards the soil just to be sure...

Some type of aphid perhaps? If they are, check out this link I found a couple years ago...it's the most natural way to deal with them and when the aphids are all gone, they'll be gone as well... Here is a link that might be useful: Ladybugs Shipped Direct

I've tried the white Chilean and it's too tender. Looks great 8 months of the year..and really struggled to survive a bay area chill winter. Then one winter after three,it died. It was in a pot,so in ground might be different. I have a very old Pink Red Riding Hood..it too takes some loss in winter and really never grows beyond a 1' square vine-shrub. Some people think its an annual,but no,it will survive most bay area winter's year after year. I tried Alice Du Pont..forget that. Its good in San Diego..but our climate makes it look pretty bad in a cool spring (when you see them for sale ..and then it dies anyways after a summer recovery the next winter. Home Depot should wait until June... I've seen them out in full bloom in March or so..and my next trip to HD after getting cold rained on..they are already dropping leaves,going out of flower. They are so tempting though! So,in conclusion-ha, This is like a dream come true compared to my trials with the rest.

Thank you for your recommendation.... I just did some reading on Pyganic. It looks like a good product, although I do worry about the bees. But the neem, soap and Final Stop have not worked to control the white flies and aphids. They are tenacious little buggers! Its so frustrating. But you've really had success with the Pyganic? Maybe I'll give that a try. I'm always a little concerned about trying new products.

@floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK No I have it in the far end of the backyard so it's out in the open, no shade until the evening when the sun moves completely to the front of the house. I hosed it down the other day and shimmied my hands through it when I first saw a web, which was larger than the one in the photo above that I took today, but I used a softer more rain like setting because I was afraid of damaging the plant. I originally thought "oh no not spidermites again!" Because I've had them in the past when I had a planter with basil inside over the winter but I wasn't able to get rid of the pests and my plant died. But I read that spidermites don't fly and when I brushed my hand through the thyme all these little flies that look like whiteflies came swirling out. I hope the two pests aren't partnering up now plotting their plant domination on me, I'm afraid they're going to win if I don't do something quick.

I have two Mandevillas in pots, and both of them are loaded with aphids and white flies. I have sprayed them with orchard spray, which has taken care of all insects and diseases on all my other plants really well, but these still seem to have the bugs. The leaves are yellowing and falling off. The yellow is not smooth yellow, but splotched with green. Should I be soaking the soil they're in? I intend to bring them inside for the winter, and if they start out with bugs, I'll have trouble getting rid of
them over the winter. Any suggestions???

Sorry for the short reply! My initial post was deleted somehow? Here's what you need. Neem oil concentrate, if lowes is to far order online. You need to do at least 3 cycles minimum to kill the aphids, white flies, spider mites.

Soak all your plants down before bringing in and you'll be good.

This is the super dumbed down version of what I wrote the first time but it will work.
