I would like to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, then head on to Wave Hill. Am thinking of visiting the Rockefeller estate and Vanderbilt. Has anyone "done" a tour in that area for about 4 days? Does anyone know if the Hudson River area has any boat tours that might lead to these spots or thereabouts. Or am I missing some good gardens in that general area? Thanks.

Last summer I took NY Waterway's package "cruise" to Kyukit, the Rockefeller estate in Tarrytown, NY. It's an all day thing. You bring your lunch and NY Waterway (see link below) does the rest. I'd say for $60 it was an OK deal, but you don't get much garden out of it. We really enjoyed Philipsburg Manor, included in the tour -- it's a working 17th century colonial farm, and it has an interesting vegetable garden and a corn mill. (We made cornbread from the meal we bought there, and it was very tasty!)

I think the two gardens I'd recommend you visit, along with the ones you mentioned, are the New York Botanical Garden and the gardens at the Cloisters (a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art). They're in the Bronx and very far northern Manhattan, in the vicinity of Wave Hill.

Definitely don't miss Wave Hill. Unique plants, lovely setting. One of my favorites.

We had a freeze warning last night and I didn't even get a frost but at least it forced me to take coleus cuttings and start thinking about winterizing some of the tender stuff. My garden generally peaks in September and still looks pretty good now. Like Wendy, I have a tough time cutting down plants that still look decent but sometimes have to out of necessity. Leaf cleanup here is a month of weekends and usually continues into December. You can't mow them-way too many. A few years ago we invested in a leaf vac/blower/shredder/bagger thing (looks like a heavy duty lawn mower). It's a great contraption for those who find themselves wading knee deep in leaves every fall. Rest? Maybe...if we get typical winter weather in January and February. Sue

I don't buy fish or meat from BJ's so I didn't even know where to look for crab. I did find some today so I guess they carry it regularly. Earlier today I shopped at Wegmsn's and while I was looking for shrimp I found King Crab from Russia and I bought about 3/4 of a pound. The price makes it something for a very special holiday. Wegman's also has lobster on sale "through the holidays" so I will buy some for me and my son (married, but DIL doesn't eat it) for New Year's Day. He makes it into Alfredo. I eat my lobster hot, soaked in butter or cold, as in a lobster roll. I am interested in ordering crab from Alaska too. Nancy

Deee, We're in ARLINGTON. The real estate in Manchester is a little too rich for us. I happen to like winter. The problem with so many people is they hide from it, but people up here PLAY in it. There are snowmobile tours that can take you from Mass to Canada with stays in B&Bs and nice restaurants. And there's NOTHING like October in Vermont!!! And give me a BLIZZARD over a HURRICANE any day! I hate the summer heat though. That's why I like it up here. The average summer high is only 80 degrees. And another thing about here that even when tourists come up, the traffic is still less than 10% of the "normal" traffic in the NYC area. "Rush hour" for us is waiting for 5 cars to pass by before you can pull put onto the highway.

Hman, I find these articles very interesting as I love the history of what we are growing. For an article I wrote on apples I found out the first RI Greening was grown by a 'Mr. Green' in Middletown, RI in 1650. To this day we have 'Green End' Avenue. The orchards in RI go between shrinking (younger kids don't want the family business) to growing (interested out of town young retirees want to perpetuate the business). Its a funny thing, but that is happening here. Just like our vineyards are growing (too bad they produce horrible wine). The colonials were key to bringing appleseeds to our state but Indians took over by planting orchards. Families then started their own home orchards that grew into a business. "Hard Cider" made the cold winters pass a bit easier. Mrs. G

The EM Mills Rose Garden in Syracuse is just GORGEOUS in the summer. My husband and I go there several times each summer just to get ideas for what roses we want to grow! It is peaceful and well-kept and has a huge variety! (Don't know if you love roses like we do or how close you are). Phyl GalwayGP@aol.com

Innisfree is wonderful and close to the Hudson Valley gardens and Annandale on the Hudson is also beautiful. I second the Cloisters but realize that travelling around the city can be slow so take that into consideration. If you are on Long Island, consider Old Westbury Gardens. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is especially beautiful during daffodil season. Enjoy.

Don't forget the Bronx botanic garden across the street from the bronx zoo. Brooklyn Botanic is a huge place. be sure to give it enough time.

Sounds like a great trip!
Since I am a resident of the Hudson Valley, I can proudly recommend the Vanderbilt estate as well as the F.D.R.estate rose gardens which are right down the road from the Vanderbilt...very beautiful.

NYBG is in the Bronx north of Manhattan (there is no Bronx Botanical Garden) Wave Hill is a 15-20 minute drive from NYBG. You can get to NYBG on metro north railway (about 20-25 minute ride from Grand Central) but to get to Wave Hill you probably need to take a taxi from Riverdale or drive.

Brooklyn is south of Manhattan and BBG is probably about a 40-50 minute subway ride from midtown.

Old Westbury Gardens is on Long Island about 35 miles east of midtown off exit 39 on the L.I.E. or by taxi from the Westbury or Carle Place L.I. Railroad stations.

You could do all these in 4 days. If you have a car do NYBG and Wave Hill one day, BBG and Old Westbury another. I think the best times to visit are mid May through June in the NY metro area.

The Waterway tours aren't going to bring you to these gardens but it would be a nice day out!
