What could I use for a braided tree in the yard??

I live with 55 acres and pretty much have access to any tree I would like. I always like those braided trees that you see in every supermarket that sells plants or Wall-Mart. I would like to try to actually plant 3 young saplings right next to each other and braid them as they grow. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should use? I have lots of red buds or dog woods?? I am aware that I will probably have to cut it down in about 20 years due to strangulation but it sure will be pretty until then! Or do you think I could use an actual maple or weeping willow?

What do you think?

just an idea to...Have any of you ever tried to plant to strikingly different pines next to each other like a box wood and a cedar and then twisting them and trimming them into the spiral? So it would look like a swirl ice cream cone?

I know nothing about this topic, but how about Rose of Sharon? If you don't have any, anyone with one will be able to give you lots of babies. Maybe you could braid together some different colors. I could be wrong, but it seems like they would be smaller in caliper than some of the other trees you mentioned and would therefore, last longer. Good luck and how about sending some of those dogwoods my way? I would be happy to send you some Rose of Sharon in exchange!

First of all, when you braid young trunks together they will eventually graft together forming one trunk that will still appear braided and should continue to grow for many years.
Rather than use three separate saplings, it would be best to comb your property for one with three multiple trunks. This is quite common with dogwood and redbud. Either would be a suitable candidate. Also clump birch, Rose of Sharon (as mentioned), Armur maple, Amelanchier.

I've had a Pachira (Money tree) for many years now. Mine has a single trunk, that is about 3" in diameter now. It grows 6 to 7 feet per year, and obviously I have to cut it back every year. It is in a 10" pot, which is plenty big. You would be amazed at how small a rootball can support a big money tree. Mine sits in front of a southwest window, getting a lot of sun. Last year I moved it into a corner with little direct sun to try & curb the growth, but it still took off, but had slightly smaller leaves. As for watering, I treat mine as a tropical, NOT a semi-succulent. These trees grow in marshes and wetlands, so they like moisture. Just like any other plant though, they do NOT like to be wet, so a well drained mix is essential. If you let it dry up too much, you'll end up with browning leaves, which eventually drop. Basically I'll let mine dry up an inch or two on the top, then water. If you're using bagged peat based soil, you are prone to rotting issues, because odds are, the bottom and middle of the rootball will still be wet, while the top is dry. I have gotten a great response by using the 5-1-1 mix with my pachira, and a maintenance dose of foliage pro 9-3-6 every time I water. Sarina, can you describe your plant a bit more? Is it one of those cute little bonsai ones, in a pot with no drain holes?? Also, are you sure about the potting mix? Usually they fill the pot with peat mix, then top it off with gravel for looks. It can't be growing in all gravel, because it would either get NO water, or it is sitting in water filled gravel, which will rot it for sure. Garden Girl, I would advise against any misting. It actually does more harm than good by promoting fungus on the leaves, and if you are using tap water, the water evaporates, leaving behind all the minerals that are in the water. If you use softened water, there is salt that will stay on the leaves. If you have rot issues, and want to save the plant, now is the perfect time to act. Take the thing out of it's pot, and wash all the soil off of the roots. Cut any roots out that are brown and rotted. Look at the size of the rootball. Like Toni said, put it in a pot that is 2" bigger in diameter. The goal is to have an inch of free soil around the rootball. I would advise you to search up "5-1-1 mix", as this is ideal for money trees. Gritty mix would work too, but the watering is tricky, so I'd go with 5-1-1 to start. You'll also need to have a fertilizer program, if you don't already, because they'll fade away due to lack of nutrients. Good luck! Joe

Tree stems (trunks) are generally thicker at the bottom and taper toward the top. If a branch originates anywhere but from the basal flare & you train it so that it appears to add mass to the trunk so that the trunk is thinner toward the basal portion than it is further above the soil line, your eye will immediately be drawn to that anomaly. Your eye has been "trained" by looking at thousands of trees in their natural settings, and something "out of place" will automatically draw your attention. Often, you won't even know why - just a feeling that something isn't right. What you propose will leave you with a novelty tree, but with the feeling that something is not natural about it. For some, that is ok - perhaps for you, too. I make no judgment about the right or wrong of it - there is none. I just wanted to point out the aesthetic considerations of training a branch in this manner. ;o) Inverse taper is of great concern to practiced bonsai growers. It usually occurs as the result of some injury to the tree, or allowing many branches that originate at the same height to remain on the tree. I have given many trees away that have developed a reverse taper because of my lack of attention to pruning practices that eliminate the problem before it arises. The reason - they don't look natural and likely never will. Except by carving, the problem is extremely difficult to correct. Of course, most houseplant growers don't hold themselves to any kind of standard and are perfectly happy if their trees are green and growing with good vitality. Usually, when I give pruning advice here, it is with the idea that I am offering a way to at least begin to make the plant more pleasing to the eye. Some may look at the photos I posted & think the trees are rather ugly, but I'm unmoved by that thought because there is a long-term plan for each tree that I grow. I offered the photos to show what a multi-stemmed plant might look like with a little thought. Normally, there are some temporal sacrifices that need to be made for the long term benefit of the tree's appearance, & I have so many trees in various stages of development that I think nothing of making a radical change that leaves a tree temporary "ugly duckling". ;o) I hope Babygrower is OK with the semi-hijack of the thread? - though I think it's still pretty close to on subject. J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?

Hi - Hoping I can get a some help to save my tree... I took some pictures which are below. Only one of my four stems seems to be healthy and growing new leaves. The other three are in various levels of sick. Help! I usually only water when the soil is dry. Lately I've let it dry out a lot because I thought maybe I was over watering it. The tree means a lot to me and I really don't want it to die! Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.This is the only healthy branch. This is the one that's the most sick. You can see that it's started to change color and wrinkle/twist. This one's leaves shriveled up. This is the only healthy branch. and here's the whole tree... looking sad. After reading a lot of these threads, I've stopped watering it. I think I over watered it this winter. I'm not sure if the wrinkled branch is dead or not. Is it possible to cut the tip of it off? Will it regrow? What about the one with the wrinkled leaves? Hoping someone has some advice! Thanks! Carlos

That is a great idea! I don't know why I didn't think of it. I have lots of rose of sharon in my yard and there always coming up eveywhere! Someone also wrote me and mentioned to use one that already has 3 trunks like a dog wood or rose of sharen since they will just graft together and keep on growing. I will probably try both and see how it goes. Thanks eveyone!! Tasha

Hi,

I would like to take 4 separate American persimmon nursery-grafted saplings (whips) and braid them so that they form a single, solid trunk bearing buds from all 4 of the original whips. Would this work? I want this to last forever (relatively speaking) - not just 20 years. I thought about taping them together, instead of braiding them, and I don't know, but maybe that would work (inosculation)...

I know this is really old but I'm gonna comment anyway, Wisteria ! Wisteria works really well for this. But only if you don't mind something that grows fast, REALLY fast. This stuff is almost KUDZU FAST ! Which makes it really time consuming and for wisteria to turn out right and look good you have to be willing to put a lot of time into it. I didn't mind, considering that you have to start out with little bity twigs basically and considering how Im impatient, Im glad I chose a faster growing tree. Well I say tree... actually wisteria is a vining plant. It can be a tree if you want to make it a tree. I cant stress "time consuming" enough and you have to really be committed. It can be out of control in a minute because it doesn't slow down, not in 11 years anyways. I guess it might eventually. Just be really sure or you could just chop it down I guess if you got sick of it, But you wont ! So that's the negatives about wisteria as a braided tree Now heres the positives... Its beautiful. I bought my house 11 years ago and the neighbor gave 4 clippings of wisteria. Actually not even clippings, 4 little branches that she broke off her plant, about knee high once I got them in the ground. Now days the braided part with no limbs goes higher than my head. The first limbs start at about 7ft. Ive let several limbs branch out and ive braided them into 5 or 6 braids going in all directions and at the end of those it just bushes out and goes all crazy. Its like a big ball or umbrella when all the leaves are in. So that's pretty big pretty fast and I butcher it at every winter. So that's that. That's how wisteria does as a braided tree in the yard. Its all up to really, how well it works.
