3 or 4 cherry tomatoes in one hole?

I like to grow a variety of cherry tomatoes....red, yellow, orange, and this year, black, but my problem is keeping up with the picking and eating. By late summer, I can't stand it anymore and most of them rot on the vine.

I was thinking of just planting all 3 or 4 plants in the same (large) hole and contained in the same cage. Has anyone ever done this?

I got the idea from some backyard fruit tree growers who plant 4 different apple trees right next to each other in the same 2'X2' hole. This is done to save space and for cross pollination. Obviously, I don't care about cross pollination, but I would really like to save space as well as reduce the yield of each plant.

Does this make sense? I imagine I'll have to do some pruning to keep all the plants about the same size.

Thanks!

Bart
