Early Spring native plant sale

Early last spring I attended a plant sale at the Worlds fair site in Knoxville. I don't remember the name of the event but I'm pretty sure it was sponsored by the Knoxville Garden Club. There was a great selection of wildflowers there but there were other tents with annuals, other perennials, shrubs, decorative items. Is this an annual event and when is it this year? Thanks

It just dawned on me that you may have been at the EARTH DAY celebration at World's Fair Park last April. There were folks there with native plants, farm critters and bee keepers. There were numerous native plant nurseries selling plants and paraphenalia (gardening type).

You might do an Internet search to see if Knoxville has put up an Earth Day site yet this year. Or just be on the lookout in late April. It usually happens around the 20th of April, whatever falls on the weekend.

ALSO, Ijams (pronounced like Iams) Nature Center has a big native plant sale every year around autumn. They may have a list of the local Native nursery folk. AND Todd Whitcher, who works at Ijams, has a nursery in Park Ridge, right next to Fourth and Gill area. You may be able to reach him and find out where and when local sales are going on.

This was probably the Talahi plant sale. It's held at Worlds Fair Park during the Dogwood Festival.
This year, it's on Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

I went to the CNC sale today. They have several types of trees, including magnolia acuminata (cucumber tree) and magnolia ashei - two very nice native deciduous magnolias. Also they had about 4-5 types of trillium, 4 types of ferns (including Southern Shield fern), lots of phlox (fragrant!), two kinds of lobelia and many other perennials. As always, they have a TON of native azaleas, many one gallons in bud and bloom for $8 and some bigger sizes. They have one of my favorites: the plumleaf azalea which is the symbol of Callaway Gardens and blooms in late June or July. I got one there about 4 years ago and it is loaded with buds this year (and bloomed great last year). The sale goes through Saturday.

Thanks for the great list Oogy, I've been to both the National Arboretum one and the Adkins one. I always love Adkins, though I was disappointed with the National Arboretum one. I think it happens way to early in the year for most vendors to have a good selection. One of the few plants I got there last year was actually miss-marked, but I purchased it because it was actually the plant I wanted (not what it was labled as). I have never been to the one in Bowman's hill, though I might go this year. There is also 2 nice native plant nurseries sorta nearby so if you plan on going, drop by both Redbud native plant nursery (http://www.redbudnativeplantnursery.com/) and also Doyle Farm Nursery (http://www.doylefarm.com).

Hmmmm, this might just be worth skipping the Talahi Sale. If Chattanooga was a little closer, I bet it would put the Talahi sale out of business. When I was down at RR a while back, they sure had a lot of intersting stuff in their greenhouse area.

Thanks for bringing up an important topic. I don't have a link handy with more info, but you may be able to Google the topic if you'd like to learn more. But, it's important to use milkweed from sources local to you. Even if it's the same species. So, even if we shipped our seed or plants, it may not be the best for your area.
