Native Plant sales this spring

For those of you interested in native plants, there are two sales coming up in April:

Chattahoochee Nature Center (Roswell) will be having their sale April 6, 7 and 8th. Description below.

The Georgia Native Plant Society will be having it's annual sale on Saturday, April 22 from 9 to 1 (Piedmont Park). Link attached.

Plan to Plant Ahead at the Spring Native Plant Extravaganza at Chattahoochee Nature Center!

Save time to shop from Thursday to Saturday, April 6, 7 and 8 from 9am-5pm each day. Select from native azaleas, ferns, evergreen gingers, Celandine Poppies, Virginia Bluebells, trilliums, pitcher plants, sundews and even Venus Fly Traps. Experts will be on hand to give you advice on choosing, planting and caring for your native plants. Then from 1-3pm on Saturday, April 8th, attend our Horticulture Workshop featuring Carnivorous Plants. Learn more about this fascinating group of plants at this hands-on workshop. See most of the carnivorous plants in Georgia and learn how they attract and catch their prey. We'll teach you how to make a small bog garden that can be placed anywhere with sufficient sunlight. esh, thanks for the information. Looks like the Chattahoochee Nature Center has everything I'm always looking for. Gingers, poppies, bluebells, trilliums, native azalea. Great info.

Wow so much going on those two weekends! And then our trade the next, I am going to have to get busy and get my stuff moved around and get caught up so I can know what I need. BTW the State Botanical Gardens is having their plant sale on April 8th with a members only preview night on the 7th. Also the Forsyth County Master Gardeners is having their annual spring sale on April 15th at the fairgrounds. So many plants, so little time!

Over the past couple of years I have assembled an 8 page list of mail order northeast North American biome native plant nurseries and retail establishments who will ship plant materials. (Some do sell exotics.) From all my looking I think this is the most comprehensive grouping youÂll find. While one should support their local plant material suppliers I put this together because of the small number of easily accessible natives nurseries in the northeast. Folks concerned about genotype will find suppliers from closer to you on this list. IÂm in the community of Jamaica Plain in Boston and we're less concerned about conservation grade genotype. I have this list in a PDF and can make it available to folks, but I'm not sure how to do this other than to share it via email. My email is aihrer@gmail.com drop me a note and I'll forward it along. (My computer is kept very clean of viruses etc. and please don't spam me.) In the future IÂll be putting together a list of northeast North American natives nurseries who donÂt ship. If you have one(s) youÂd like on the list, then please let me know. Or if you have information you think should be on these lists let me know. Hmmmm, this might just be worth skipping the Talahi Sale. If Chattanooga was a little closer, I bet it would put the Talahi sale out of business. When I was down at RR a while back, they sure had a lot of intersting stuff in their greenhouse area.

Good thread! We specialize in uncommon native trees, so the top of our list would be: Yellow Birch - the Appalachian form is the prettiest, with bronze bark. The form in Northern Indiana isn't as pretty, with brownish platy bark that doesn't peel in curls. Red Oak - Somewhat clichè, but it is one of the most important trees in our area. Very fast-growing, too, and usually has decent fall color. Fraser Magnolia - This is our most requested tree, but we've had a tough time getting seedlings established lately. Very stately form, with huge tropical-looking leaves. We've got these growing in Indiana, and they're really vigorous. Table Mountain Pine - Fairly uncommon, but important for fire-prone areas of the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic - This is our second most popular "unusual" species. American Beech - Common in our area, but not as young, newly planted trees. Should be used more, with its pretty gray bark and amber fall color. Basswood - For a fast-growing native tree, this is a nice choice. The flowers are good for pollinators - the whole tree buzzes when they're in bloom! The list could go on and on- There are so many native trees in Eastern North America that are worth growing, there's really no excuses for landscapes that aren't biodiverse!

Juat a reminder that the Chattahoochee Nature Center sale will be next Thursday, Friday and Saturday (April 6-8). If there is something in particular you are looking for, call ahead to inquire.

Don't forget the Native plants that are available at the South Campus Perimeter College Botanical Garden, available each Wednesday during their Noon Lecture series. They also usually have a weekend sale during the Spring, but I don't have a current schedule. Maybe someone will post the date.

According to this link, there is a sale today (April 1), another May 6 and then again on June 2/3.

I went to the CNC sale today. They have several types of trees, including magnolia acuminata (cucumber tree) and magnolia ashei - two very nice native deciduous magnolias.

Also they had about 4-5 types of trillium, 4 types of ferns (including Southern Shield fern), lots of phlox (fragrant!), two kinds of lobelia and many other perennials.

As always, they have a TON of native azaleas, many one gallons in bud and bloom for $8 and some bigger sizes. They have one of my favorites: the plumleaf azalea which is the symbol of Callaway Gardens and blooms in late June or July. I got one there about 4 years ago and it is loaded with buds this year (and bloomed great last year).

The sale goes through Saturday.
