I love fragrant plants. For "tree/standard" Brugsmansia "Charles Girmaldi" is my most fragrant angel trumpet. Kind of looks like the one pictured. Stemmadenis tree - blooms/fragrant from April til Nov. aloysia - almond verbena- blooms/fragrant year around. Night blooming jasmine For vines jasminum officinale - non-stop blooms rangoon creeper - double flower Annuals Heliotrope purple petunias alysums I have bought so many plants that say they are fragrant and they are not! We ought to start a post on what plants don't live up to their fragrance. My dwarf ylang ylang- 1 day of fragrance and your nose has to be right up there to smell it. I'll still keep it because of the beautiful blooms. .......cheryl

My nut trees that I ordered from different growers have started to arrive. The two Chinese Chestnut Trees were delivered Friday, the two Texas Paper Shell Pecan Trees came in Saturday and six Tropical Almond Trees came in today. I had only ordered three but she said they had so many left over due to slow sales, she packed in extras, in fact doubling my order. I have been busy potting them all up in temporary pots waiting for them to go dormant so I can plant them later in my orchard. This way I can watch over them in my screen-greenhouse fussing at them like a mother hen :>) I also received an email today saying my apple trees were just shipped today, the Ein Shemer (350 chill hours) Grafted Apple Tree and the Dorsett (250 chill hours) Grafted Apple Tree. A little trick that may be helpful in growing fruit trees in Florida and having them set fruit in very low chill areas; It's important as soon as the trees drop most their leaves, to go through the trees and take off the remaining leaves so the tree doesn't have any photosynthesis going. This helps a lot with getting them to go fully dormant sooner and have a longer time to collect the required chill hours. Lou

Was out the door early and planted the last Ftrebush into my second 25 gal wooden whiskey barrel. Saw another butterfly yesterday. It was a gorgeous deep orange with black spots and a 3 " wingspan. It was perched atop the bright flowers of my White Penta out front, completey ignoring the Red Penta just 6 inches away. He was not nervous in the least as I stood over him, memorizing his markings. He flitted off and I trotted inside to google his identity. Turns out he/she was a Gulf Fritillaries, IMHO, one of the most beautiful butterflies around. Today as I returned home in the afternoon I saw another. A Gulf Friitillatie ( who names these creatures ? ), - again on the White Penta,..maybe the same guy from yesterday. I knew nothing of butterflies till I travelled to Costa Rica 22 yrs ago. While there I visited the Monterverde Cloud Forest for 2 + days. While there I took in their Butterfly Garden.. On barely 1/3 acre, this netting covered jungle was an eye opener. Have had this in the back of my mind ever since. So by Saturday I will have two butterfly gardens, small as they are. One out front with 7 plants and a NE exposure, the 2nd, behind the lanai with only 3 plants ( a Firebush bracketed by 2 Milkeeds ), with a SE exposure. In the 6 yrs I've lived here have not seen even one butterfly as best I can remember. In last 4 days have seen four,. so am optimistic. Think this is something I would recommend to anyone with a little land outside, after the work of installation the maintenance is easy, even for me ! going to be loading my car as well soon, just in case we get some rain - I would like everything to be in there, I have other things I did not mention before - plants that is, that I am bringing too- sure there will be people there who are just starting- and I started doing clippings and now have way too many of some things out here.
