I can't believe I still have blooms!!

This is crazy. We had freezing temps last week, then it warmed up a bit and rained for several days. Let up yesterday and today. I guess it's supposed to start up again soon. But after the torrential downpours of a few days ago, I was shocked to see so many blooms still looking great this morning. Here are some of them:

CLAUDIA CARDINALE - she hasn't bloomed for yrs! Finally this yr she's been doin' pretty good. I thought I lost her.

EDGAR DEGAS - thought this was BROCELIANDE the other day, but found out I was wrong. So many striped roses....

GERALDINE FERRARO - this was a rose offered by J&P a few yrs ago for only one season. She was a test rose, and didn't do very well for me the first yr or two. Now she's really lovely and blooms rather frequently. Too bad they already dumped her!

LOIS WILSON - this is one crazy-tall rose that almost always is in bloom!

MAIDEN VOYAGE - this is off one of my little rooted cuttings from one of my favorite roses. It's a McGredy FL no longer available in the US, and the actual coloring is much deeper and sort of 2-toned salmon-coral.

Your roses are like the Enerigizer Bunny, they just never give up. They are all Beautiful but I really The Maccartney Rose & Wildfire. I've cut all mine back for the Winter and I can't wait for Spring pruning in med-Feb.

Beth, you are so lucky to still have all these beautiful roses flowering for you. Thanks for sharing them here with us!

I especially love Geraldine Ferraro and the McCartney rose. The latter has such a clear, fresh, pink color, which is such a cheerful nice contrast to the autumn- and winter-gray!

I don't have many rose blooms left over and the quality of the flowers that are still there is not great anymore. I think my roses are ready for the winter pruning that I will start to do soon.

You still have time..I wish you and your fiance the best of luck. Many many happy years together. :) Is it going to be a big wedding? In a hall, etc? If so, are you planning on placing plants per table? Quite a few 'women' come here asking which plant would do best and look prettiest on tables at the reception. Some even bought a plant per person. Yep, there were good movies this wkend..I switch channels often, prefer a channel w/o a zillion commercials. I'm investing in DVD's..no commercials and I love Special Features. Learning about the actors, how a movie was made, oh and Bloopers are so entertaining. lol Binders. Did you ever get Recipe cards in the mail? They send a dozen or so, each card has a different meal. The idea is to buy more cards every month until a set is completed.. In the 90's, I received 'X' amount of plant cards for free, in the mail. Each card unfolds into four pages. I liked the cards and decided to join this club..'No contract.' It took a 1.5 years to collect all, 1000+ cards. The name is Success with House Plants. They send free plastic binders, and numbered cards that clip inside each binder. BTW, cards didn't come in numerical order, they were sent randomly. There's different Titles per section. For Example: Seasohal Flowers, Plants that bloom all year, Short-lived gift plants, Beautiful green plants, Exotic Plants, Cactus and succulents, Pest and Disease and more. A complete set is five binders. The company stopped selling this collection in the late 90's. I've gotten emails from people who were searching for these binders. I checked Ebay, 'helping people find used binders,' and sure enough, there were a few for sale on Ebay..One problem is most only collected 2 or 3 binders. But others had complete sets. I won't reveal the total cost after I finished paying for the set, but one woman I met here on GW found a complete set for 49.00. Which is dirt cheap!! I enjoy the binders..Each card has picures, and botanical names of each plant, added info like sun, soil, water, temp, propagation, etc. I might snap a pic of these binders later..'making dinner now.' Anyway, I'm glad I joined the club..There's so much to read, and the most beautiful plants.

My cheap light set up was a plastic 4 shelf unit from the Value Village (or maybe it was Good Will), one four foot long aquarium light fixture hold two fluorescent bulbs also from Value Village (extra cheap). You might also check CraigÃ¯Â¿Â½s list and Free cycle). There are many more aquarium light fixtures on CraigÃ¯Â¿Â½s list than shop lights. I did buy one four foot shop light fixture that plugged into the wall from Home Depot (definitely more expensive). One warm white and one cool white rather than expensive plant bulbs in each fixture. One year I found another aquarium light cheap and I had three shelves of seeds going. Heavy twine goes over the shelf above and through the fixtures above the bulbs with enough tail that I could keep the lights very close to the surface and then keep tightening the twine as the plants grew. I plugged all three lights into a surge strip and then plugged that into a cheap timer to turn the lights on and off. Finally big aluminum foil strips to tent the light fixtures. Of course those of us over 50 will instantly recognize what this set up looks like from college dorm closets. THEN I discovered Trudi and winter sowing, Thank G-D. One year of trying it out and the next year, my indoor sowing was over. Trudi, if you are headed down D.C. way, I'll even give you two of my light fixtures, 'CAUSE I AINT GOING BACK.

Beautiful pics Masha! Isn't it crazy? I had some gorgeous blooms I started to take pics of a couple days ago, but my dang camera battery went dead. (one of the ones I didn't get was BROCELIANDE!) The next day it started dumping torrential rains for two days. Waaah!! I meant to get out and try to get pics today, but got sidetracked. Maybe they might still be ok tomorrow. I can't believe how many roses are still trying to bloom even after the freeze we got last week. I love it!! Your PAT AUSTIN is gorgeous! And I love the camellia. I oughta check on mine and see if any are trying to bloom yet. They usually bloom closer to Jan tho.

Marie - Progress! Itn't it great? ********************* The newspapers need to go! Are there any drop-off bins for them? If you find a bin along a route you often take, you can mke it go along with shopping ... papers go out to make room for groceries in. If your area is just not easy to recycle in, and there are no organizations that have "paper drives" ... trash them. ADS: The ads are short-term promotions. There will be more with the next newspaper. Would this work? 1. Coupons for things you buy? Cut them out and put them in a coupon wallet. Discard the rest of the ads. 2. Ads for things you need REAL SOON! Clip the ad for that thing and put it in your wallet as a reminder to buy it. Discard the rest of the ads. Throw out the ad as soon as you buy the product. 3. Ads for things you will need eventually (if you are planning a remodel or refurnish), or ads for "I can make that!" items. Clip the ad for that thing and put it in a folder labeled "Future Furniture" or whatever as a reminder to buy it. Discard the rest of the ads. Notice that you are only keeping the few square inches of paper that is of interest, not 8 sheets of it. With this approach, I turn a stack of Sunday ads into 15-20 coupons, and maybe a clip in a file folder of gardening ideas. A whole home and garden magazine becomes a few additions to the recipe folder and a clipping in a "How to" folder. ******** "filled a large garbage bag with unneeded stuff. It's in the corner of the garage for now because there are things in there that my kids might need for their kitchens." How old are the kids? Unless they are within a year or so of moving out, the stuff might not be worth the space it's taking up. And storing in bags doesn't work well - they don't stack tidily and the stuff breaks. If it's worth keeping, store it securely in boxes that stack. ********* "5-drawer filing cabinet" Storing at the point of need tends ot keep clutter down more than a huge storage place that isn't convenient.

Gorgeous blooms, Beth! I can't believe mine are blooming so much too. Maiden Voyage looks great, I like your description of it, too. Too bad I can't buy it anywhere, are you planning on opening a nursery by any chance?:)

Haven't seen Claudia for a few years ~ if I remember correctly she was stunning. Glad to hear she's starting to perform for you.

You lucky girl Beth. The only thing left here blooming is a couple camellias, which are beautiful too but I am sooooooo ready for spring. Judy

Eye candy to me! Oh, I miss my roses and it`s only Dec....I have a long time to go so your pictures are so uplifting to see. I really like Edgar Degas. I have a passion for the stripes. I have The McCartney rose and I love it. Always in bloom. Thanks again for this post. Lesley

Harold, I wish I could get out and just get my winter deadheading done. Don't have time. I only have Sundays off, and the rest of the week, there's not enough daylight to get any time in outside. Can't wait til the days get longer again...

Christina, I can't believe there are so many roses till trying to bloom even beyond these guys. It's amazing. And that MCCARTNEY ROSE.... ooooh what a delish scent it has!!

Masha, if I could, I would start a nursery. As it is, I can't. But I keep hoping one of these days I can get some cuttings of some of the rarer roses to Cliff so he can propagate them. We'll see...

Iris gal, I really thought I had lost CC. She sat dormant for about 8yrs. The bed she's in is total crap as far as the soil goes. LOL.. actually "crap" would help!!

Rosemeadow, I don't believe Lois has any scent. But then, I could be wrong. I rarely check. Especially her. She's like 8ft tall (and not even a climber!)

Judy, I'm with you... I can't wait for spring. I hate winter. Ya know my camellias don't bloom til Jan-March. In fact, they didn't do much last season...

Lesley, I love THE MCCARTNEY ROSE too. It's one of the smelliest roses I have. And usually always blooming too.
