Hi alina, I grew celebrity in New Jersey years ago and was also disappointed in the taste. Bought some a couple of years ago on sale at the Cox farm stand in Vienna and they were wonderful--our best variety of that year. Could have been mislabeled, I guess. We bought a celebrity last year but my husband (he has taken over the vegetable garden) lost track of what was what. They were all good, as I remember. We usually buy a mixture on the theory that different varieties will do better in different weather conditions. This year Bryan has invested heavily in German Johnsons though. His whole family swears by this heirloom variety. We'll see how it does in Va. I always make sure we have at least one early girl. Great tomato! One year I had one that turned out to be indeterminate. The tomatoes were classic early girls but they ripened early and the plant kept on producing without let up all summer. One of the regrets of my life is that I did not try to propagate that tomato--I was just too busy! Oh well... If you buy large nursery grown tomatoes you are supposed to strip off some of the lower leaves and bury a portion of the stem to achieve better balance between roots and top growth. You can sort of lay them sideways if necessary.

Another vote for Black Cherry. It is a monstruous, wonderful plant. My grow list for next year (at the moment): 1. Cherry-Black Cherry -- Last year's champ 2. Early-Matina -- precocious flowering 3. Main-Big Beef F1 -- dependable 4. Late-Cowlick Brandywine -- hyped, apparently the real deal 5. Cherry#2-Sungold -- hyped #2, love it or hate it it's always in the top #x cherry lists 6. Dwarf/Gifts-Sophie's choice -- To gift to friends. Additionally I'll be growing the following in an attempt to keep lacewings and other beneficials around next year: Sweet Alyssum (Annual)- Repeat blooms from March-Frost, smells good Borage - Blooms April-September, Edible in moderation -- tastes like cucumber Cornflower (Centaurea Cyanus)- Blooms May-September, Extra-floral Nectaries, Edible in moderation -- tastes like cloves Sunflower (Velvet Queen) Blooms July-August, Extra-floral Nectaries Cosmos (Sensation Mix) -- Blooms April/May to Frost, failsafe "If you can't grow Cosmos, take up golf"

Huge flavorful deep red - single slice covering that sandwich with a taste that puts all other sandwich components in the background? Juicy & did I say, the reddest red of anything in the garden with fantastic production through heat & humidity? Visitors were drawn to these plants loaded with the deepest, reddest tomatoes that needed two hands to hold securely - lottsa fusion! Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red - grow a couple - you will be soooooo happy. Close contenders - Germaid Red, Neves Azorean Red. Smaller you say? Knock your socks off good is Clint Eastwood's Rowdy red - the best red mid-sized slicer I have EVER grown - productive through it all. A taste that has friends begging for more & family snitching them (gggrrrrr). Sioux, Arkansas Traveller both really good but not in the same league as above. Also, for a big bright red-orange slicer canner that just makes a sandwich sooo fine - Chesapeake - it's a great canner too - no lacking acidity with this heat & humidity loving plant; just has great balance between sweet & acid, not quite softball sized for me..

Kosta D: Tips & Tricks like Epson Salt and Egg Shells are very welcomed and recognized! When growing in containers on a balcony, a lot of "organic" methods won't work well because you won't have the ecosystem in your soil to maximize organic methods. Container gardening, especially in an environment like an enclosed balcony, is almost closer to hydroponics than to in-ground gardening. You won't be able to use a lot of the advice people give to gardeners that assume in-earth gardening. For example, eggshells are almost useless in that environment, because there aren't enough organisms to break them down and make the minerals bioavailable to plants. If you want to use organic substances like that, I suggest you start a worm composting bin. The worms will turn your kitchen vegetable waste and things like eggshells (grind them up fine first) into compost that converts the nutrients into forms your plants can actually use. There's a vermicomposting forum on here somewhere where you can get help with that. And, yes, you can keep a worm bin indoors. Mine, which is small, is indoors because it's too cold for the composting worm species here in the winter and can get too hot in the summer, so I just keep the bin inside all the time. There are no odors, no escaping worms, etc. as long as the worms are happy and conditions in the bin are good. FYI, you will probably still have to use some liquid fertilizers, but the vermicompost will be beneficial in many ways.
