Most of these roses were taken by me, but a few came from my Forum friends which I say thank you and a happy new year to you all from Susan and I.ÂRon

Well... it seems you went from a not so great Christmas with poor weather that hampered your family plans and your greenhouse, to a very nice New Year's Eve with more family stopping in to visit! Things always seem to have a way of working out... and it was a good year... I'll agree with that! Welcome to 2009! I did manage to stay awake well past midnight... Larry and I watched a couple of movies together... and before I knew, it was almost 2:00am! My first surprise of the New Year is Star of Holland... which opened, and doesn't look like Star of Holland! It's way too white with not enough red to be the right variety, but I like this one... whatever it is! I'll try to get a few new photos posted for an identification. In the meantime, I hope everyone can begin the New Year with a smile! So far, the day is dawning with bright sunshine... a good sign if ever there was one!

Thanks, Min! I was about to call you out by name, actually, even though I have never witnessed you in the act. And do you mean to say that other people have a life beyond Gardenweb? wcgypsy, you're a brave soul. I celebrated the New Year by pruning four hybrid tea roses. They retaliated. I had that too Glenda, right before Christmas and ran a low fever for about three days after I was over the stomach part of it, I think because I was so dehydrated, or maybe that's just the way the virus runs its course. Anyway - I'm pretty sure it was the sickest I've ever been with a stomach bug. Something for everyone to be on the watch for if you haven't had it yet. You got a Kindle! That's where you've been. : ) My oldest daughter wanted one for Christmas and then got a new camera instead. I look forward to the day when my kids can carry Kindles around instead of a heavy backback full of school books. I don't know why it's taking so long to switch over. There are only a few schools doing it now.

The oleander is the variety they sell at WalMart on clearance when it has a touch of scale and is potbund. I realized today that technically I protected the oleander because I sprayed it with Wilt-Pruf late last month. I'd like to hit it again before it turns cold again. I killed a gloriosa last year with no protection or special siting. It was buried under snow and ice for upwards of 3 months. This one hasn't had snow on it for more than a day because all of the snow on the ground is melted around it. We only had 7" of snow in December, it will be gone tomorrow, but it's been consistently cold, 10 straight and then 12 straight days below freezing with a monthly low of 8. Could've been worse.

Ron, as usual your work has no equal. But, I was wondering if I might prod your creativity/curiousity in a direction of possible interest to you.....in short a possible challenge lol.

Could you, or would you make a rose-art scene depicting the changing of the year depicting falling rose BUDS, somehow dated 2007, then full-sized roses bearing 2006 in some manner (possibly roman numerals on all)and finally, the remnants of "spent" roses on a surface of water such as a pond or whatever suits your insight. The water it's self may be considered the end of 2006?

Even a change of color of the roses as they progress may be a visual tool as well?

Forgive me if I overstep myself by making a comment of this type, but I have seen others.....and considering your most capable skills..............you know!......lol. Of course this could easily be greatly expounded on with background symbolism in many ways.

I was just thinking that your exceptional talent could bring this "dream" to a visual reality.
