Spring Me A Surprise

Spring Me A Surprise

I thought this would be a great way to share extra seeds with those who are looking for specific seeds before spring gets here.

This is a surprise swap so please don't post who you are sending seeds to. You do not need to send seeds to join, just post your top 5 wants. If possible try and find at least one other to send to.

RULES:

1. Post your top 5 seed wants. The ones you really would like to have before spring gets here.

2. Send me your GW name and your address in an email. I will send out a spreadsheet of addresses by email on February 28th of all requests by GW name with their addresses so you can send seeds. Try to mail out the seeds during the first week of March.

3. Have Fun!

    Thanks,

    Pleasant spring surprises

    Q

    Comments (2)
My pleasant surprise this year was Baptisia australis (false blue indigo) that I received in a newbie SASBE from "laine" last year. I was so disappointed that it didn't germinate and just set the container aside in late summer, intending to dump it into a future lasagna bed. Forgot all about it and discovered it a few weeks ago while doing some cleanup in one of the beds. Well, that milk jug had 9 of the healthiest-looking plants you could hope for, about 6 inches high, with no help from me during our dry summer of 2006 and windy, windy spring this year. I planted them around a stump along with some bachelor buttons, all in my line of vision when I sit on the porch swing. I read so often on the forum, "Don't be quick to give up on a container." Now that I know why, from experience, I'll probably be giving that same advice somewhere down the line.

Spring Me a Surprise - Received...

    Q

I received a surprise today from Chris (grolikecrazy)! Thank you. :) The plain letter envelope had holes in it- looks like it was damaged in transit. There was no bubble wrap or other padding inside of it to cushion the seeds. Seeds sent to me with no bubbles almost always do get destroyed like this, because the PO runs mail through some hard metal rollers unless it's in a bubble mailer marked FRAGILE in big red letters. :( The Dianthus barbatus seeds were about 75% destroyed and the Red Noodle Yard Long Bean seeds were completely dust. Thank you grolikecrazy, for kindly sending to me. I can still sow the few Dianthus seeds that made it, and hopefully get some plants! Excited about that. :) I'm sorry this happened, Chris. You were so kind to send seeds to me. I'm very glad you were thinking of me, and some of the Dianthus seeds do appear to be usable. It made my day to receive this, even if it is just a few seeds. : ) Thanks, Grovespirit Wondering why the surprises I mailed out haven't shown up here yet. I do hope they didn't get lost in the mail.

Roses that have pleasantly surprised you this spring

    Q

    Comments (16)
I'd like to share about an Intrigue! This was 2 Springs ago, but hang on - it gets better. Anyway, I got one and planted it in a large decorative pot. That beautiful perfum-ey wonder bloomed about 5 times. I'm in the desert southwest, long growing season. She was so beautiful. Grew her on the morning-sun-side of the house. Well the following Spring the aphids came, as they do, and I don't use sprays anywhere here and usually Nature takes over and either birds, or enough ladybugs, etc. take care of the aphids. Well, I didn't watch closely enough, and be darned if they didn't kill that rose. So here we are 2 years later and after 2 years of lamenting (I truly missed that rose), today I found 2 of them at Walmart. Both had blooms on and oh how I have missed that fragrance. These will go into the ground this time and for the first time this year, we had to spray a couple of things due to aphids. Hated to do it but I will not lose another plant to them. Tried the Dawn treatment, hosing them off daily, nope. They were still winning. I won this battle!

Any surprises in your yard this spring?

    Q

I have lots and lots of caterpillars. Lots of stuff blooming late or in the case of some of my gingers coming up later than usual. My pink jasmine/Jasminum polyanthum didn't bloom at all. It is usually a once bloomer maybe with a little sporadic bloom later. It usually blooms in March/April. I have 3 plants of it and none bloomed for the first time in 6 years. We had a long cool spring here with some late season cold night temps. Everything is a little cockeyed and confused lol. My caladiums are just now coming up. Some of my passies froze back a lot and are just now getting growing again. I bought a few replacements for some I lost a few years ago as well. Sunburst and Nigradenia.

Even though this swap is mainly about filling want lists, it's cool to send surprises too. After all, ever see a seed you didn't like? Even if you don't have something on someone's wish list, it's a lot of fun to send other stuff. I did that in the Christmas Seed Swap, and didn't hear anything negative. I know that, when I see an envie in the mailbox, I don't really mind what the seeds are, I'm just happy someone thought of me and wanted to share!

Aloha folks, I want to join! I have several of the seeds folks are looking for! :)

It's still the 25th here in Hawaii. In fact, it's 10:12 PM Hawaii time so even if the time stamp on GW says the 26th I think I still joined in time because it isn't the 26th here for me YET!!

Because I want to be sure I get included, I will post my wants later!

Thanks very much, I really hope you include me. :)
