Back Garden Shots - 1st Set

Finally I have some pics sized and ready to post. Wow it has been a busy season. Deadheading one to two hours every day during the heavy flushes, but have done it daily and it paid off for quick re-bloom. We had a great summer -lovely sunny days without being too hot. It has been a treat.

I am just too sorry that I have not responded much here on the board, I have pretty well kept up with it every day, and I know when I have the time, there are a lot of posts I want to go back to and put my belated responses in. Have been enjoying all the pics here over the last few months, and it has been relaxing looking at them and catching up - just seemed too tired in the evening to post much myself.

Anyway, hope you will forgive me now if I over-do it! Oops! I think I have a lot lined up with one shot or another, but will try and pace myself! :)

I have visited parks that don't have a thing on your amazing yard. My day today was rather challenging but looking at your roses made it better. Thanks for sharing those.

Now I am very glad to be wrong on this topic - it's very good news to hear that breeders are actually focusing on taste. Jonagold is quite delicious. I read "The Fruit Hunters" and the author interviewed the Zeigers of Zeiger genetics. They admitted that most of the focus of their stone fruits has been on shippability, but they claim to now have changed their focus, and they are trying to improve on taste - the goal is to have a peach that tastes as good as the old heirlooms, but also ships well and stays good for weeks at a time. Yes, I am not sure I would even know how to grow apples on the East coast. I feel very fortunate to live in the Santa Cruz mountains, we have about the best climate one could ever ask for when it comes to apples. They are so tasty in my orchard, that is what got me so enthusiastic about apples. I spent years trying to grow all sorts of things from subtropicals like macademias to citrus and stone fruits. None rival the perfection of the apples in my orchard. We even get outstanding Summer apples because our Summers here (upper 60's to mid 70's daytime, mid 40's to low 50's night time in the middle of July and August) are equivalent to East Coast Fall weather. Our first apple to ripen is Anna around late May, and the last apple to ripen is Williams Pride in late January. Feb through April is covered primarily by storage apples. But we do get seasonal fluctuations here too that shift which apples end up tasting good. We get a period of hot Fall weather that - if it shows up too early tends to ruin the early Fall apples which seem not to like much heat. If the heat doesn't show up until October, then we get nearly perfect apples on all the varieties. Last Fall the Cox orange pippin harvest was ruined because the hot weather showed up at the end of August. They went mealy very quickly.

Wow, qute a lot more responses here. Thank you so much. Judy. I think the fence measures approx 7' due to the fact that it mainly sits on a raised bed. That fence is not too long and because it was dividing two areas of the garden, we needed it to be quite decorative. But our main deer fence, you cannot see. This goes through all the evergreen trees and is approx 7 or 8 feet also. Sorry I cannot remember the size, but I have included a link below. We had it installed about four years ago and I have to say, it changed my life. We are right on a deer path with population getting larger and larger. By the time we installed the fence, our rose devistation was heart breaking, despite all my egg spraying every five days. I was ready to give up. It got so bad that many roses actually died because of the constant chewing and general weekening. So with the deer fence, we moved surviving roses to the back, and are developing this now, and adding more and more and hopefully MORE roses. :) Anyhow, deer are now welcome in the front and all the rest of the garden. They live here. But our front yard, is not as nice any more. They are eating many things they never ate before, including geraniums. So we have to rethink the whole thing and come up with a different kind of garden. I have substituted dahlias for the geraniums and I do not like them nearly as much. But I have to come up with something that works, because I will not chase the deer away anymore, we love them now, heehee! I am introducing a lot more peonies which are lovely. Wonderful bold bright washes of color everywhere Pauline, I love your gardens! It's all so beautiful and so neat and orderly, no weeds in your gardens. I did love the shot of the deer eating the rose blooms though, that was thoughtful of you to fill them up and maybe they won't come on in:) I'm sure they appreciated the extra bounty. Thanks for showing us so much, I'm sure you have other areas you haven't covered. Maybe when winter hits and you're not so busy you'll catch us with some blooms and bush pics:) That'd be a treat too:) I'm glad your holiday was such a treat with a gorgeous center piece like you had. Thanks.You understand- when the body betrays the spirit! I didn't think I would like that one looking on close-up, but as the finished panel, it has wonderful movement and energy. I guess I can start with a small thing... like a trivet? Want to do a table top. Want to do a mirror. Want to do just a wall piece. But, I can start with a small thing. I knew an artist who while working on a little cabin he bought decided to put the most extraordinary mosaic on the floor of the bathroom (see, we got back to the bathroom forum purpose). It was not his primary medium, however his creativity just came through in everything he did. I had always hoped that I would get to mosaics by the time I was ready to tile a bath, kitchen... but did not. Need to practice a bit, then perhaps when the basement bathroom plumbing needs to be redone (what did the prev homeowners do behind those walls??) I may be ready to get creative!

Awesome Pauline, wow, your rose garden and beds are drop dead gorgeous. If ever I can travel again and make it as far as you live, I would love to see your gardens in person!! Look at all that beautiful color, color me envious:)

Aw shucks, you guys! I am glad you like them and appreciate your kind comments so much. We are usually so critcal of our own gardens and there is still lots to be done. Despite how it looks, we garden in very poor conditions. We carved our property and garden out of a forest, so the garden literally was a virgin. We had, still have, lots of springs which keep part of our lawn miserably sodden. My husband spent many of hours and labour working on the drainage issue to no avail just to find that they will spring up somewhere else. We also had a lot of blue clay, so the drainage is pretty poor in parts. Most of our beds are raised and that helps. But I am hoping in the future for us to work on getting a decent lawn, lots more drainage and re-levelling etc, as lots of areas have sunk badly. We are pretty happy with it, though, we would like to have more sun-light, we have enormous cedar trees, hence the roses seem to get tall, everything does, and pretty well everything needs staking -a task I could do without, but necessary. I still feel our home is new cos we built it ourselves, and it took a long time with the 1980s recession. We are still very amazed though, how it has evolved. We love the privacy, yet we are so close to everything and three short blocks to the ocean.

Judy, thank you, that was so sweet of you to say that. The rose your are talking about is St. Patrick - a lovely HT. Of course it is washed out looking on this picture. Judy I am not quite sure which path you are talking about. Is it the one that goes through the new bed, leading to the shade garden. If so, that path goes through and behind the shade garden. Right in the middle of it is small circular lawn which I hope to add a fountain to the centre. There WILL be a seat in that area. I may post some of the shade garden pics after the next couple of batches (posted before) but You may get more of an idea.

Daun, I have dabbled with HMF and posted some pics, but I have many more that I would like to post there. Yes I do have some roses listed there, but not many, and No my garden is not on the site. (under Pauline's Roses)

I will post some close ups as soon as I can. I do have trouble with my wide angled shots, detail not clear enough and washed out. All other aspects of my camera are great, but I get frustrated and actually took almost three days off from the garden just to try and go through my manual to get better pics and experiment. I really got myself in a mess. changing all the settings to find out that that was not want I wanted either and changed them all back again.. Very frustrating. I will get me that Cannon, yet! heehee!

Bustopher, here's one for you

Here, there are purple petunias, lobelia, and campanula in the rear rose bed, blue and white. I also grow lots of different campanulas which I will post pics when I am more caught up also Johnson's Blue geranium, just started delphiniums, of course Hydrangeas and fall asters.

Carla, Come on down too. You know you are welcome. I wish you did not live so far away, and that would make it easier for you. But if you ever visit the Pacific North West, because we had the B&B, we have a nice suite that we use (a LOT) for friends and family. :)

Beautiful garden Moodyblue. What is that pink rose in the vase and the orange rose at the back in the third picture?

Do you spray to keep the roses looking this good? I chopped off most of my buds and leaves due to Thrips and spidermites.
