Several wish to chat OT but these messages are pushing other gardening related topics off the first page quicker than normal.

I agree, that an (off topic) Conversation side to the forum is greatly wanted and needed. There is a real sense of community on the forum, and members need a place to discuss and share things that are not specifically SFG related.

I feel the same way. We have a very close knit group of people in the sfg forum, and need a "conversation" side to it. Moderators - would you please consider this?

Most mineral soils have a fairly high buffer capacity against pH increases from acidic organic amendments. I'd be far more concerned with the N drawdown/immobilization associated with incorporation of wood components - especially those that have a high % of sapwood - like whole chipped trees or sawdust of any kind. Pine bark is generally less acidic than sphagnum peat, which usually ranges from 3.0-4.0 with pine bark at 3.5-5.0. with some as high as 6.0. The idea that wood chips, pine needles and oak leaves create acid as they decompose has to have been invented by someone who is still confused by what came first, the pH or the trees. In nature, what grows is based on natural selection over time. If we find pine forests where the soil tends to be more acid than not, does it automatically mean that the acidity was somehow formed by the trees? Of course not; when tree seeds germinate in soils which are favorable to their growth are going to thrive. So, as a general rule, plants of all description are going to do best in areas where they grow and reproduce the best, i.e., the plants selected the soil, not the other way around. It is just too easy to assume that because oak and pine trees prefer acid soils, that their decomposing leaves created the acidity in the soil. Those soils were acid before the trees got there, or the trees would not have thrived and created forests. You will find that major and long-lasting changes in garden soil pH can only be obtained with corresponding changes in the mineral content of that soil. Mulches composed of garden wastes, garden compost, leaf mold, composted wood chips, or almost any composted biodegradable materials just don't create any significant long term change in the pH of your garden soil - especially when used as a 'minor' ingredient as you suggested it would be. I spoke with a self-proclaimed old-timer who suggested that an 18" spacing in all directions would probably be best. He had planted his block similarly and it was growing well. The rub is that he has a Washington strain planted, so the bed had filled in from seeding, along with crown spread. If you have an all-male garden, I presume that it will take longer to fill-in than one that drops seeds. Some web literature says that the new all-male hybrids can out-yield the older varieties by three to one! Yet not one mentions what variety they are referring to when they talk about yields. Based on that missing kernel of information, you could end up with one third to three times the amount of asparagus that you want! I did come across an interesting tid-bit somewhere about extending the season, but I don't recall where. It said to harvest most of your bed as per the usual procedure, but let a portion fern out right away. Then, later when the regular harvest is done, you can cut all the ferns on the "late-harvest" section which would then send up new spears that you could harvest in say, July. I don't know if it is true or good to do, but if you ultimately find that you over-planted for your needs, you could try it out. For me, I have a 4 foot wide bed across the whole width of my garden that I dug and enriched in the fall. Now I just need to decide how much to plant. I am leaning towards planting three rows, 12" apart in all directions. So I would thus be planting where the grid intersections would be, rather than in the middle of the squares. That would give a full 12" to the outside edges of the box for spreading and winter protection. Someone else that I read suggested giving more like two square feet per plant, so I have also considered just planting two rows down the length of the box. I am beginning to get the feeling that there is no "completely right" answer, or if there is, I won't know for three or four years! I will be planting Guelph Millennium, a nice high-yielding all-male hybrid, developed close to home!

Ed, I'd consider 3 by 8 instead of 4x8. Better yet, 3 by 12, since your boards are 12 foot. I had the 4x4 beds first and was constantly circling around them to do stuff, especially in the early part of preparing and planting. I found it irritatingYou can step over a 3 foot width. Right now I have a 3 foot wide, what i call, growing strip that edges the south and east side of my (small) yard. I just have a stepping stone about every six or 8 feet so I can step across. My growing bed is surrounded by the sidewalk on the outsides, which is kind of nice. I can stand on the sidewalk and tend to that side of the garden. This is my first year at this house, but nobody has bothered it so far. Gardens are great therapy for helping to heal the greiving. Hope it goes well for you.

ok, i'd like to third this since my other one was not posted.
:'( i'd love it if you'd consider this for us, we newbies to this method have so much to learn from the older ones, and i hate the idea that people like me have run off the old timers on this forum with our chatty talk, that is why i think that this conversation side is so very important. then we can have our chatty side while the others can have the important side, and when we have something important to add or learn we can go over there and add to that. of course, i did mention all of this in my email to you last week. i really do hope that you do consider this. it would be a great thing for this particular forum!!
