Automatic Watering How Long?
Comments (5)There two factors to consider. One, how long to water, and two, how often. One way to get a handle on this is to mix into the soil coversome perolite that stores water until it's needed. That way, the plants with more demand will have some reserve moisture available. The plants that don't need the extra moisture will not pull it out of the perolite. Second, use a mulch cover to take control of the situation. By using a mulch, you will slow down evaporation, a waste of water. These two actions will stretch out the variables into more managable units. A moisture meter might be of some help during the calibration of the timer and to monitor the soil between cycles to determine correct operation. That is why I have gone to self watering containers which is good on a small scale. A larger scale operation would be to go hydroponic. I have operated a fair sized system outside with good results. While it might not be anything you would care to try, it does solve the watering cycle problem . Check out this outside hydro system if you have time and intrest with the link below. chuck Here is a link that might be useful: Some hydro projects to expirement with...See MoreFirst time garden- not producing. advice?
Comments (39)Yes, thank you for asking! Well..improvement? we shall see. Progress? yes! I had all of the cardboard from underneath the soil removed. Leaving it as the native clay-like soil underneath. Which still had some weeds/grass but i am assuming that is okay. I waited about 5 days to let the soil reestablish (and there were two days of rain), and I literally just got done replanting most of the plants. I put a handful of rock phosphate in each hole. I switched up the beds, so that the tomatoes are in the furthest bed with the most sun, as well as a couple of the summer squashes. The middle bed now has 4 of the kabocha plants in it. My cucumbers didn't take on the transplanting very well so i threw those out. I am now just waiting to plant some new seeds that I have started. Bell peppers and some more (saved seeds) kabocha. I am crazy about kabocha so I am okay to donating one and a half beds to them:) after 5 days the kabocha have already sprouted!! I don't know that the original plants will produce, but I have til the end of the month or so to see how they adapt and if they don't...I still have enough time to plant new seeds for the second season of summer. After planting them about an hour ago, I hand watered them with the hose (sprayer attached) a couple of times up and down. Im not real sure how to measure with this method but it will just take trial and error i suppose. I also plan to fertilize them later this week with "hasta gro" organic liquid fertilizer. pics! removing the cardboard.. replanted tomatoes and squash replanted kabocha kabocha sprouts!...See MoreTop down watering or soaker hose for leaves?

Comments (2)I think that's what I got from Lowes but they didn't last very long. I was using them to water the lawns. Sometimes it gets too windy so that's why i use soaker. Forever to finish but very effective. I wonder if animals would even chew on them to get to water? I just found a few that were letting out more water than normal and wondered if they were from animal bites???...See More- 15 years ago
