Use Ad Block and No Script if you are annoyed.

1 Use firefox.

2 Get an addon called "No_Script"

3 Go to Garden web.

4 Allow all scripts on this page.

5 Forbid Intell_i_tex

Another useful add on is "Ad Block". This allows you to block sites that have ads that are inserted using html instead of java script.

Certain words are blocked on this site. Remove underscores and spaces when searching for your add ons.

We shouldn't have to resort to having to do this in the first place. I would rather pay a subscription fee than deal with their ad issues any more. I don't mind supporting valuable resources. HelpMeFind is a site I will never mind getting out my credit card for, and even before they requested memberships, I never once saw an ad.

I'm sure I haven't been overly missed, but I've backed away from using this forum very much any more. I've learned a great deal here, and have enjoyed all of you here, but......

That is a good analogy Cameron! I totally agree. I've been doing we design since 1997 and one of the foundations of good design is that you don't irritate the user. Not to say that is isn't done all over the place, but when I was first learning, I had it hammered into my head that pages need to load fast, be presented in an appealing way and not offend, harass, annoy, badger, berate or generally irritate the visitors. One thing about these ads that jump out like that - if they weren't effective, they wouldn't be so widely used. Now, I'm not sure if their effectiveness is measured in clicks or in sales, but if it's clicks - a lot of those are false. Also, since so many people are annoyed by them and the fact that they are tricked into visiting the sponsor, I can't imagine that it has a positive effect on sales. I'm glad that you guys told me about AdBlock Plus. If more people knew about it and used it, then probably they'd see a decline in the clicks (false and otherwise) and have no choice but to deduce that the ads are ineffective because people hate that kind of thing. /rant

When I clicked on "what's this" it explained about this feature and mentioned something about ivillage wanting to "enhance our experience". Well it didn't enhance my experience. In a thread about daylilys, someone mentioned a daylily called "strawberry candy". This intelitext feature had the word 'strawberry' underlined. I thought it would be some advertiser selling strawberry plants, or even daylilies. That would make sense. In fact, it was an advertisement for some company selling chocolate covered strawberries for weddings. Anyways, I'm not thrilled if it's slowing response time as my computer is slow enough. I did disable the feature, but it says if you ever delete your cookies off the computer you will have to deactivate it once again. Glen

No fears - I'm not paying anyone anymore. I'll definitely try the AdBlock though. Actually, I should have been more specific in my complaints. It isn't really the ads, it's the links on the bottom of the page right below the reply box. If you scroll down, right below the 'Preview Message' button, there are some links to Ads by Google, to GardenWeb, or to other sites. It's not really that these links move, but more that the space at the top shrinks, thereby shortening the page and moving those links into the space formerly occupied by the Preview button. Probably trash on my computer, sine it's slowed down a fair amount recently... I'll have to run my spyware software to see what's up.

I think it's pretty obvious where that's heading when adobe starts coming out with developer tools to let developers convert flash based content to HTML 5 instead. One thing, for many commercial sites with flash content (like big box stores or news sites) there's often an app you can download to use instead that gives you access to the same content. I don't care for this trend, since I'd rather access the whole internet via a browser, but this seems to be the way things are going with portable devices. I hate flash and I think it's used stupidly for no reason on about 85% of the sites that use it, but I agree it's vexing not to have it on iOS. breezy, if you see a thumbnail for that page, then it's cached and you'll keep seeing it. Try emptying the cache/history (in settings>safari) and see if that helps.

Using NoScript within Firefox is not just a way to get around the ads -- it's an extremely safe way to browse the internet.

I don't ever visit questionable websites (ie. porn, "hacks", etc) yet I once got a nasty spy/adware "virus" by falling asleep at my mouse and accidentally clicking some web ad banner at a safe site. This was several years back when IE vulnerabilities were exploited with regularity.

Since FF and Noscript, I've had minor hassles with my normal sites until I add them as safe sites "Allow XYZ site". But from that point forward, never see ads, never get junk installed, and can browse with confidence, even when I grudgingly hand my keyboard over to a visitor wanting to "get on the 'net".
